The Day of the Triffids is Science Fiction, Post-Apocalyptic, and a little bit Horror - but I think there's no denying that it is, more than anything else, an adventure story. The story's hero, Bill, is capable and optimistic, and meets the many challenges he encounters without ever falling into despair. Perhaps it's that essential optimism that turns a story of catastrophe into an adventure...
There are many radio adaptations of The Day of the Triffids, but in some respects this one is the best simply by virtue of being an unabridged reading of the original novel. Certainly it's the version of the story in which that sense of adventure is most discernible...

In my opinion, this is by far the best reading of the book. The reader is a very skillful actor who understands the nuances of the book perfectly and so characterises all the players perfectly. Audio books do not get better than this wonderful apocalyptic 1950s novel read with such skill.

Headphones on, laying in the dark on my bed listening intently, letting my mind create the images to accompany this wonderful adaptation.
    Thank you 🙏

When you're finished with this I can also recommend the full readings of Rogue Male and The Man Who Was Thursday - perfect, unabridged readings to get lost in...

I heard this narration years ago but never knew the name of the narrator. However also love the BBC radio play brilliant music and atmosphere.

I look forward to you uploading the follow-up, called "the night of the triffids".
It was written by a different author, but it is well worth listening to.

Ah, much as I'd like to do that I'm afraid I can't... although it was broadcast on BBC radio it was the work of a company called Big Finish, who still sell the production through their website. They are understandably protective of their livelihood, so I steer clear of uploading any of their productions. However, I have a second channel (Mysterious Magpie) which has a number of Wyndham adaptations on it, including three or four dramatisations of Day of the Triffids, and that may be of interest to you...

Is this literally the book verbatim or is there some radio drama editing?

I've not checked, you understand - but given the length of the reading I've always assumed that it was an unabridged reading of the whole book (UK text).

i love this actor - his reading is just perfect!! and this is one of my favorite scifi books. the movie was good, but the book, in this case, is much better.
thanks so much for posting this :) ✨☄️🛸🚀🪐

Glad you like it - it's one of the real 'epic' readings from the early days of BBC7. I've also got multiple dramatisations of the story on my other channel, though of course none of them compare to this reading...
