Beginning teacher here with 9 days until my first day (even though I'm in my early 60s - I'm a late developer!) Thank you for equipping me with activities to get started.
This is really great advice for new AND veteran teachers. It's so important to be prepared and to try not and do it all in one day. I drastically changed my first day of school routine years ago and it has been a game changer. Typically, secondary teachers spend the first day of school talking about rules and procedures and routines etc. BORING. I like to take advantage of this very unique day. The one day of the year where you have EVERYONE'S attention, everyone is excited to be there and everyone is paying attention. You get one shot at this so don't let the opportunity pass you by! As a French teacher (I teach beginners who have never been exposed to the language) I decide to skip the boring rules and procedures. I say one thing about it. "You are in middle school, if you don't know how to behave in a classroom, there is no list of rules that I can give that will change that". I actually teach a cognates lesson and tell them about me all in French. I don't use any English, just pictures and easy words they will understand. I give them fun facts about me (one of them being that I absolutely DESPISE Ed Sheeran) and turn it into a get to know your teacher activity. My hating Ed Sheeran becomes the big thing for the whole year and helps me build relationships. Kids start bringing me pictures of Ed Sheeran that I deface and put on my board, they sing Ed Sheeran songs, draw pictures or me married to him etc. and I have become known as the teacher that hates Ed Sheeran. Even kids who don't have me in class stop me to joke about this. This approach really sets the tone for the whole year. I love that you shared this video because so many teachers feel like they have to get it all done on the first day and you don't! You hace 180 days to get it all done! Bravo for another inspiring video (and sorry for yet another LONG comment)! Have a great week! I'll see you on Instagram!
It really is! During the shutdown when we had virtual classes one of my classes all got together and all changed their profile pics to Ed Sheeran and all turned off their cameras. It was a sea of Ed. LOL. It really is a great bonding tool! @@tootscarlson
Aww, thank you so much as always for taking the time to watch and leave such a detailed comment! It's nice to hear that my videos are helpful for veteran teachers, such as yourself, as well as new teachers. I completely love your perspective for the first day of school and agree that it's so unique! Although I will say... I'm a little hurt that you despise Ed Sheeran LOL! I love him and his music 😂 We'll have to chat about that 😂😂😂 But, as always, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and ideas with not only me but also everyone reading the comment section! I hope you have a great rest of your week ahead! 🎉
Not sure if this is as true for K-5, but high school teachers, get to school very early. There will be a lot of traffic. Parents & student drivers often aren’t used to the traffic pattern. There will also be tons of schedule changes. Embrace the chaos and be flexible. Another great video! Keep them coming. Thanks for sharing your tips & experience!
Great thought to add in there! I know the traffic situation would be totally different with student drivers so that's great to keep in mind. My contract hours usually began over an hour before students would arrive to school (plus they obviously aren't driving themselves but the carpool line can get crazy) so that was never too big of an issue. But, I can see where it would be something to think about in advance! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! 🎉
Thank you so much for all these tips, Michelle! Even though I’ve taught for 8 years, I’m feeling very nervous about this year given that I’ll be teaching a new grade, and it’ll be a split class. Having these suggestions of how to plan the first week of school puts some ease on my mind. Thank you!!
Oh my gosh... you're so welcome and I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! 🥰 Quite a few veteran teachers have commented that the beginning of the year nerves never go away 😬 So you definitely aren't alone... especially with so many changes! But, I hope you have a great start to the school year! 🖤
Thanks Michelle, I am about to have my first week and it's still full of jitters. I am sure your tips will help me be more prepared and at least have a sense of control during this week. Thanks a zillion! ❤
As always, you share such helpful tips. I will certainly keep these in mind as I start my first day with students on Monday, August 21. My main goals are for my students to feel safe, excited, and loved. If they feel those things, they will be ready to learn. Thanks for a great video and have a fantastic week ahead! I hope your latest professional development presentations have been going well! 💜
Aww, thank you so much Mandy! I ALWAYS look forward to your comment and I hope you had the BEST first day yesterday! 🎉🥰 Your students are so lucky to have you as their teacher... they hit the lottery and don't even know it! 🖤
I really loved the planning tips in this video and in the planning the first week of school video. I would love to see more like that with how you plan a typical week. Loved it!
Love the tips Michelle! The fill in activities are my favorite. We didn’t have directed drawings back in my day and if we did, I would still find a way to screw it up because I cannot draw worth a lick😭! Icebreakers are such an awesome way to get the classroom community going without the kids feeling the pressure of introducing themselves and it gives the teacher insight to the students without them knowing it!
Hey hey Russell! Thank you so much! 🥰 Don't worry... I'm with you! I'm not a great drawer at all, and even struggle with the directed drawings. I hope you have a great rest of your week ahead!
Michelle, thanks for all of your great suggestions. As a teacher, I have found it’s always a good idea for a teacher to have many backup ideas that we can use at different t moments. The ones you suggest here are excellent choices. 👍
Aww, thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment Nellie! I really appreciate your support and I totally agree that having backups is a NECESSITY in the classroom! 🥰
Thank you for this video. Even as a veteran teacher, I get nervous about the first day of school. Thank you for the suggestions on how to ease my mind.
Yeah, unfortunately every state and district is different... it's hard to make the video too early because some teachers are just starting their summer at that point and don't even want to think about back to school LOL! But I hope you had a great first day! 🎉
You can find websites to set alarms through as well and even use a regular wrist watch or another clock in your room to set alarms so there are definitely other options outside of just your phone!

I’m stealing your idea about sharing something or someone I detest. What a terrific relationship builder. ❤

Hi there! I actually already have a video on that here:
ruclips.net/video/X6ppo3GvMh4/видео.html
ack, a week too late! We start much earlier these days. But your ideas are solid!
Yeah, unfortunately every state and district is different... it's hard to make the video too early because some teachers are just starting their summer at that point and don't even want to think about back to school LOL! But I hope you had a great first day! 🎉
I cannot set alarms, as we have a no phone policy😅. But the other points are really good! Thank you! ❤
You can find websites to set alarms through as well and even use a regular wrist watch or another clock in your room to set alarms so there are definitely other options outside of just your phone!
I’m a veteran teacher and still get nightmares about the first day of school/ beginning of the year!! 😂😂🤷🏻♀️
LOL! I'm sure a lot of new teachers reading this are happy to know they aren't alone but it's also scary to think that it never goes away 😂😂😂
Me too!!
Lo I thought I was the only one that had back to school nightmares
26 mins ago❤🎉
Thank you for tuning in to watch so early! 🎉
Just finished day 5 and it has been a heat week.
Thank you for watching and commenting... I hope you have a super smooth rest of your year ahead! 🖤
