I can open mine with just the tip (giggity). It’ll also open up in your pocket and greet you when you go to take it out. Mine is also a first run model.
Bird? I just got mine in the mail yesterday, 12-17-2019, from Blade HQ, and they corrected the problem. I absolutely love this thing.....I can honestly say, one of my favorite Spyderco Knives. This is the second knife that I followed your lead on and purchased, the other knife being the Sage 5. Love them both! Anyway, I just wanted you to know. -Stephen, Ohio
I recently got the cqi version of the Ikuchi in November, it seems they fixed the issue. Also, they added a bushing aroung the pivot so the blade drops shut. Thanks for all the great videos.
My Guardian Tactical OTF does this. I even took it to Blade Show this year to show them and they said it’s perfectly fine. I can and did “paper cut” myself but didn’t draw blood.
I JUST picked one up (like an hour ago) from River's Edge Cutlery. CQI version, I tried shoving the tip of my finger in there as far as I can and I'm not feeling the tip at all. It drops shut freely too. It's a sweet knife...
I've had an ikuchi in my carry rotation since it came out, it's never been an issue. I think it's only people that don't own one that think this. The rat model one and civivi anthropos are just as "deadly" for the same reason, never hear complaints about these. You've really got to be trying to snag the tip to actually do it on mine.
Omg I could not stop laughing...I’ve been married for 30 years and my wife would have had no problem with me cutting myself.. probably would have encouraged it....lol..you guys are a beautiful couple, just the fact you guys have similar interests is amazing, special and rare...cherish it.
I’m a drunk girl on Halloween for an upswept Persian style blade.. makes no difference for me for this knife and honestly I have hundreds of knives and this problem if you want to call it that has never bothered me personally. Now a super weak detent with this problem can be problematic.
i have one purchased in 2020 with the bushing in the pivot and it drew blood within the first day when i noticed this put my fingertip in there to see how close it was
You want know something messed up. I got me a ZT0452GL about 4 months or so ago and kept it in the box. And pulled it out a few weeks ago to carry it. And the carbon fibre has a crack in it and i didn't do it. For a $300 knife. It shouldn't have that problem. Thoughts?
I would try to exchange it. If not from where you bought it, Kershaw would be a good option. I have not heard of that at all as a problem :( maybe you are just the lucky one! -Frankie
What is it with all these people buying knives and just being like 😒 I really don’t care to open my sweet blade I just got in the mail? Listen if you taint sprinting back to da house from your mailbox and immediately Checking out you new piece of steel: YOUR MAKING THE WRONG CHOICE OF KNIVES TO BUY!!! BUY something that makes your loins burn with desire because: NO ONE IS GUARANTEED TOMORROW!!
The the boker kwaiken has such a close size ratio from blade to handle that the back (of the older ones at least) where it is open, leaved the belly of the blade exposed. and having rubbed the 'closed' knife in my pocket, I have sliced open my finger real good.. with blood pouring everywhere.
I've had three so far. Two from one of the first runs and one from the most recent. The most recent one and one of the ones from the first runs aren't too bad. I can catch my finger on it if I really try but it doesn't bother me. The other from one of the first runs was pretty bad and I could easily catch my finger. That one bothered me
I nean the same can be said for the Kershaw blur but I don't really hear anyone saying anything about it. I don't really see a problem personally. Plus I mean its a knife...they're supposed to be sharp. If the "issue" is there then I'd say just take it I to account and pay mind to it.
I've had three first release Ikuchis, 2 were worse, the third was OK. The latest version Is said to be CQI'd. Changes supposedly are tip is set deeper, and has a bushing added like the Kapara for a "drop shut" action. Haven't bought the latest, so unconfirmed first hand.
I remember people complaining about this on the Boker Kwaikens when they were first released years ago. To this day I’ve still never poked myself 🤷♂️🕺🏻
This isn't the only knife with this "problem." I tried to overlook this flaw with one of my favorite knives: the Ace Nimbus. The part that made me unable to overlook this feature, is the fact that you CAN accidentally partially wave the knife open when taking it out of your pocket. What happens is the tip will snag even the tiniest bit of fabric and get caught while trying to pull the knife out of your pocket. Pretty sketch if you ask me, wave opening your knife with the tip of the blade?.... I've been seeing more knives with this "flaw." I think designers are sacrificing a little bit too much safety to keep a knife sleek and tight, or the QC was just not good enough. I have also experienced this flaw on the Manly Wasp, as well as the Buck Squire. I would prefer not having a chance to cut myself while my knives are not 100% open or deployed intentionally.
I have one and this issue just isn't present. The tip of the blade sits well below the liners when the knife is closed. It must vary from knife to knife.
I purchased my Ikuchi in August and never had an issue. I can open it by putting my nail on the tip if I really try, but with my finger there is no more chance of touching the tip of the blade than with e.g. a Kizer Begleiter. Perhaps it’s a theoretical issue for people with both really soft skin and thin fingers? But then they would have problems with a lot of other knives as well. Overall though I think this is probably one of those ‘issues’ that few (if any) people actually experienced, but that just has become a perceived ‘truth’ through sheer repetition of a assumption online.
So, I have the Massdrop Dogtooth, the Ti one and left handed... So I keep it in my left pocket and I couldn't figure out why my pinky kept getting a split about 1/2 inch long on it... Then I figured out that it was the tip of the Dogtooth... It's sooooo pointy. Still love the knife tho, just don't carry it as often. The first Dogtooth vid you guys did was the first vid of yours I watched, liked the vid so much I bought the knife. I haven't missed a vid of yours since. Anyway my two cents. Oh and I just recieved my Gavko Thresher.....LEFT HANDED VERSION!!!!! So sweet! Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) stole the first one they shipped me, but the second one made it thru! DAMN!!! It's beautiful, another Birdshot (FOUR!!!) recommendation!
that is very attractive knife with a European kind of style and i think it stands out from most of the spyderco knives when it comes to wanting it in my pocket - Cheers
I have this knife, not an issue for me. I suppose if you really tried you could get a little nick on your finger just to prove it could do it. I am writing this Feb 2021 and maybe there was an adjustment and not as bad as in the past. I have had a few knives that I have pricked my finger reaching in pocket. This is not one of them.
I like the Ikuchi but I'm going to wait to see if they do a sprint run. I've never had the tip problem or at least never noticed it before. Now the paranoia is going to kick in and I'm going to have to check every knife. :)
I order stuff from Blade HQ several times a month. Every time I place an order, I request a Frankie drawing. To date, I have received only 1 Frankie drawing, out of... WHO KNOWS how many requests!! This isn't a complaint btw, just a head's up about how difficult it can be to get one. So if it doesn't happen the first time, don't get discouraged.
What are you waiting for flying frogs 🐸? 😱😱🤩🤪 wait, what’s that sound? listen 👂: ZomB760 open me! Open meeeeee! 👂 open me please I’m claustrophobic in my spyderco box save me!
ZomB760 cali Ahh good man!! Congrats on a super sick piece and of course for joining the Spyderco Liberation Front!!! (All you have to do to join is liberate your own Spyderco from your own box once it arrives) :). 🍻 cheers boys!! (Hmm now I want one)
If it takes that much effort to cut yourself, it's not an issue. I have seen the comments - "omg it's cut me five times". These people shouldn't have knives.
I ordered mine in February and they were sold out. I put down $5 at Blade HQ and I just received it about 2 weeks ago (early December). I assume this is the 2nd run. The tip of the blade sets down farther than yours. It is very hard to touch the tip. My fat fingers won’t do it, but my 18 year old daughter was able to draw a minor bit of blood when she tried to do it. I can’t imagine it happening by accident. It would be a 1 in a million in my opinion. Maybe I could throw up some pictures of mine for you. Let me know where.
This is more of a gentleman knife more than anything... this should go in a pocket of a suit more than anything... if you like the style of this knife but still hesitating about whether or not you’ll cut yourself then I’d suggest the boker kwaiken or WE 618 or even the WE 604 (my personal favorite) Edit: This is still a great cutting knife though...
I got cut on a twosun ts136 stingray by putting my hand in my pocket because the blade is too close to the open back of the handle I gave it away to a friend after that, I regret giving it though because the guy isn't a knife guy and he doesn't treat it right plus I put a wicked sharp edge on it and I over heard him talking about it like HE sharpened it which pissed me off lol I hate that guy now and want to get another stingray
Ohio Knife Lover I get the same thing from touching the choil edge and blade on WE knives that are Ferrum forge designed and I love them. I just don’t run my pinky down the spine 😬
The blade sits on the sheathed liner of the pants. Not touching in pocket. No problem imo. I hate it when the blade is reachable through the spine when sliding hand in pocket.
Ya know if I jam my finger in my Kabar sheath with the knife in it I’ll cut my finger and whine about it Lol.. It seems a bit picky unless it’s really pronounced and causes injury lol. I like the Spyderco Cuchi
Yes, snagged my finger ony Ikuchi. Emailed CS and they never responded to me. This is my 3rd issue with CS in as many months. Taking a break from Spyderco and sticking to quality products, like We knives. China is winning the production knife market, in my opinion. Sucks.
I just handled one at my local knife shop. They fixed the issue.
"They"? The shop fixed it or Spyderco changed something?
The factory fixed it. The born on date on the box was new. The tip issue was what kept me from buying one in the past.
@@erikb21 I got one too and mine is the newer one as well with the tip resolved.
I can open mine with just the tip (giggity). It’ll also open up in your pocket and greet you when you go to take it out. Mine is also a first run model.

I recently got the cqi version of the Ikuchi in November, it seems they fixed the issue. Also, they added a bushing aroung the pivot so the blade drops shut. Thanks for all the great videos.

The new CQI from a month ago they fixed it so it sits a little further down. Also the action is smoother
I JUST picked one up (like an hour ago) from River's Edge Cutlery. CQI version, I tried shoving the tip of my finger in there as far as I can and I'm not feeling the tip at all.
It drops shut freely too. It's a sweet knife...
Your fingers aren't fat they're big-boned.
Got my Frankie & Bird classic on order. Thanks for announcing the 3rd drop 👍🏻

Uh oh, add the cold steel code 4 spear point to the list, just checked and it's the deadliest by far. Maybe this is what code 4 means! Ahhhh!
I actually did cut my finger pretty good one time from catching the tip on my rat 2.
Omg I could not stop laughing...I’ve been married for 30 years and my wife would have had no problem with me cutting myself.. probably would have encouraged it....lol..you guys are a beautiful couple, just the fact you guys have similar interests is amazing, special and rare...cherish it.
Only time o can see it being a problem is if it starts to deploy while you’re taking it out of pocket.
I’m a drunk girl on Halloween for an upswept Persian style blade.. makes no difference for me for this knife and honestly I have hundreds of knives and this problem if you want to call it that has never bothered me personally. Now a super weak detent with this problem can be problematic.
Hi,
My Ikuchi 's production code on the box says "KS" (Nov.2019).
I can not feel the blade tip catching the skin of my finger.
It's not a problem anymore but I'm not exactly sure when the CQI occured.
i have one purchased in 2020 with the bushing in the pivot and it drew blood within the first day when i noticed this put my fingertip in there to see how close it was

I got an Ikuchi very early in production, pre-CQI, and my version has a much lower tip than the one in the video.
The the boker kwaiken has such a close size ratio from blade to handle that the back (of the older ones at least) where it is open, leaved the belly of the blade exposed. and having rubbed the 'closed' knife in my pocket, I have sliced open my finger real good.. with blood pouring everywhere.

'Oh no, you can NEARLY cut yourself if you deliberately try to, throw it in the GARBAGE!' - the internet, apparently
I have never seen someone so eager to cut themselves lol but great video all the same guys. 👍🙂
I nean the same can be said for the Kershaw blur but I don't really hear anyone saying anything about it. I don't really see a problem personally. Plus I mean its a knife...they're supposed to be sharp. If the "issue" is there then I'd say just take it I to account and pay mind to it.
That’s a nice looking little blade. You could always go with the ZT 460 Persian.
Great video ! Thanks for sharing !
No issues with mine, but having that problem with the Kizer Nomad got me bad a couple times closed in pocket!
GiantMouse Clyde has the same issue. I didn’t notice it at first but I did after I caught my finger on it slightly
I remember people complaining about this on the Boker Kwaikens when they were first released years ago. To this day I’ve still never poked myself 🤷♂️🕺🏻

It's a neat little knife. I really like the flipper on it. But, that little notch where the spine meets the handle bothers me aestheticly.
I really like that knife. Thanks for the video guys.
I like the Ikuchi but I'm going to wait to see if they do a sprint run. I've never had the tip problem or at least never noticed it before. Now the paranoia is going to kick in and I'm going to have to check every knife. :)
Got my Ikuchi today and checked this and it appears the tip is lower in the pocket so no blade tip contact.
There are a few blades out there were you can get poked by the top of the knife.
absolutely, here and there
I got mine in November 2019 it’s fixed the tip sits much lower than you knife
I don’t live on the edge I get straight to the POINT
Only $130?! I'll have to come back to this video and click the link later once it's back in stock.
IKuchi sounds like a smart spyderco fleshlight🤣
Spyderco has a few models with flaws where the blade can still cut you when closed.

The only time this was a problem for me was when i reached past the knife in the pocket and cut the shit out of my pinky.

Since i posted this comment, I have received 4 more authentic drawings by Frankie and 2 Blade HQ imitations!
Would you rather have that, or feel the choil on back side??

I say no problem lovely knives 👍👍
Man around 2:53 you had me seriously cringing.. LOl
Right?!

I have a second run model and I cannot push my thumb in far enough to catch the tip
Not as bad as the zt0452cf. If your finger slips off the flipper you're gonna get cut.
If this were a radio show, this would sound so wrong.. hahaha.. i like it!
If it takes that much effort to cut yourself, it's not an issue. I have seen the comments - "omg it's cut me five times". These people shouldn't have knives.

Jon Duncan I don’t exactly have a problem with edges you may be able to touch but when theres a true finger sized gap on a knife its unforgivable

It's not as if it would be worse than a table saw. Wink wink.
