I am a self proclaimed native junkie. When suggesting the native, there's always someone that says "Well, I work on ladders all day and have to have the one hand operation of my pm2". In my own experience giving both the pm2 and para 3 good long carry opportunities, I cannot stand the compression lock. I find I have to shuffle my hand around to operate it and it just takes away from the joy of using a knife. The point is is that just because you (figurative you) who have never owned or handled a native and think back locks are for your grandfathers buck 110, does not mean that the native is not extremely easy to take out of the pocket, get to work, close and put back in the pocket. I use the native far easier one handed than any para model. In addition, on the fidget front, the spyderco USA made back lock is really something special and oh so, satisfying. Sorry for the native fanboy behavior. I love my natives!

I think this “fidget factor” is another fad born of RUclips. Just like bushcraft.

@@kpfagerberg It's overstated somewhat but playing with your knives is fun and will remain fun.... unlike walking around in the woods, cutting notches into sticks with your Tops BOB and wondering wtf you're doing with your life.

@@kpfagerbergbushcraft as a concept is fantastic. The idea of connecting with nature, relying on only a few basic tools and relying on yourself and your knowledge to work with nature instead of against it. The kind of thought process that strips the extraneous luxuries of modern camping. Fundamentally, “bushcraft” is a modern idea that takes inspiration from an earlier time where “camping” did not exist because it was just living in the wilderness. Unfortunately that idea has been co-opted to become the exact antithesis of what it should be. I’ve been to one bushcraft outing and it was enough to turn me away from the entire community. A bunch of people obsessed with gear, always looking for something new to buy and carry around. No understanding of the outdoors or nature. Clunky, heavy kits that didn’t even make sense. It’s a shame because I really like the idea of bushcraft, but anyone that identifies as a “bushcrafter” has no clue.

I got the uncoated Rex 45 version myself a few weeks ago, it's an outstanding knife. It's broken in to the point that I can thumb flick it open (that was unexpected). I'm a huge fan of tool steel blades, they're more my taste than the stainless "super" steels. My S35VN Small Sebenza has been my edc since around 2014. It's a great knife but... that same knife in something like M4 would REALLY kick everything else permanently out of my edc rotation.

Great subject for a video. Definitely agree with the premise. A Native in frn with the more square clip (got stolen) and a stainless Delica (pulled out by a coat hem) were my first Spydercos. I now have 12, almost all sprints, exclusives, or limited editions. But I still bought a catalog FRN 1/2-serr Native 5 to replace ol' stoley because it's that good and completely dependable. Not only rides the line of 'big enough for.../small enough to...' but reprofiles it to a laser edge.

  • @dr.oetqer

    Definitely underrated!
I love the Native 5 and have seven different versions yet, with different steels and handle scale materials. S90V, REX45, Cruwear and S110V, with FRN, smooth G10 and fluted CF. Of all the versions the FRN S110V is my most used one, mainly for cardboard cutting and other tasks in and around the house. Absolutely great ergonomics, easy to operate both left and right handed and it doesn't scream 'dangerous knife' if I have to use it with other people around. It's almost up for everything you throw at it, within reason.
Although I love the Native 5 it doesn't get much pocket time anymore as I prefer the Para 3 a bit more and honestly forgot about it. LOL

The Native 5 might be Spyderco's best value for the money, and a great place to get a feel for various different steels. It's not the thinnest behind the edge, but it also can hold up to abuse really well. Honestly, it's my favorite thing they make simply because if you need a knife, it's incredibly rare that the Native is straight up the wrong tool for the job. It might not be the best knife for the particular cutting task, but it will be 90% of the knife you need, and if it's the only thing you carried for the rest of your life, you probably wouldn't really be missing out much on that remaining 10% in the situations where something else would be better. It's not the best cardboard knife, the best apple knife, the best bags of sand knife, or the best "oh wow, this feels like a well made object" knife, but it is good at breaking down cardboard, can cut open an apple, can stand up to abuse, and definitely feels more premium than a cheaper back lock knife. It is in all regards and all situations, totally and completely, utterly and impressively, acceptable.

I just fell down the Spyderco rabbit hole a few months ago. Got a Sage 5 LW and was instantly hooked by the ergonomics and compression lock. Got a Roadie because I love small, traditional slipjoints. Got a Manix 2 to try the ball cage lock and see what Golden could do.
I gotta say, as much as I love them all, they all suck when you have gloves on. I thought a back lock was outdated, but man it really is a tried and true workhorse.

One overlooked benefit of the backlock is that you can safely clip it onto any waistband without worrying about it opening. This is so useful if you are wearing a skirt, any type of pants without proper pockets or if you want to be low profile.

    • @davidgray4138

@@Paa375 I would opt for a plain edged blade for cardboard and maybe look at the alternate steels. Personally I use the part serrated because I’m doing greenhouse work, lots of cutting into bags of gritty material and eventually the blade dulls but the teeth will still tear open bags and saw through plastic.

Great points! :) Only thing I just have to say concerning the backlock: There are at least 5 ways to operate this locktype one handed, one even with fingers all the time out of te blade path almost exactly like with a compression lock. Additionally, the backlock is safer in the pocket and also in operation , better usable with gloves or cold, wet fingers, and makes for a nice closed back on the handle (WITHOUT that "hotspotty" comp.lock cutout).

I recently decided to get a new folder with a nice steel (I often fall back on carrying just a SAK Cadet because I just love that tool), and I was leaning towards The Para 3 LW in Spy27. Then I saw this video, and I ordered both a Para3 LW and Native 5 LW in SPY27 thinking I would decide which one I preferred and send the other one back. Here I am nearly a week later still debating which to choose(I can't keep both, my conscience won't let me). I feel like the Native is the best fitting knife have ever held The ergos are just the best I have experienced (I am sure stuff like the Shaman and PM2 are up there as well, but I like to stay under 3" on all of my folders.). On top of that I genuinely appreciate how it looks. It walks the line between a normal looking folder while still having a signature Spydey look better than any other knife in their lineup around this size. There are only two problems... The wire clip and compression lock on the Para 3 are so good. I used to EDC a Squeak and a Dragonfly, so I have become quite attached to that style of clip. If I could get a Native with those two features, I may never have a legitimate reason to buy another knife. I'm really glad to have stumbled across your channel. I love the content. Would you ever be interested in reviewing some more traditional styles of knife? I have a few I could send your way. I have a higo no kami, Douk Douk, and an Opinel No.7. I also still have my Spyderco Squeak if you have any interest in reviewing that. It's a slipjoint spyderco with a sub 2" blade. Probably one the most legal knives in the world.

I've loved just about every one of Sal and Eric's designs they've come out with and a lot of the other designs from other makers as well. Spot on assessment of why the Native gets overlooked. The fidget factor is a real thing, but it is truly an absurd way to judge a knife based on its intended purpose.
You know what an analogy to that is? Cars. People look at a car, like the price, the interior, the exterior, the reliability, and the other stuff that makes it a good purchase for them - but then they get to the part about infotainment and they reject it because the car cannot post a TikTok of them singing behind the wheel. It's absurd, are we driving cars or fidgeting with the tech?
Also, the argument about lockbacks not being ideal for 1H operation is only valid for knives that lack the jimped choil of the Spydercos. I have a couple of Cold Steel lockbacks that I would never dare to close with one hand, but this is simply not an issue with the Native lineup.

I had a chance to handle the Maxamet version - the ergonomic is fantastic, the feel of the material less so. Does the G10 feel more ‘substantial’ or ‘solid’?

I’m a lefty and I want a native 5 compression lock, honestly I have no issue using right handed compression locks as long as the clip is on the left side so I have something to grip. I like my para 3s way more than my lefty pm2 because there’s barely any aftermarket parts for the lefty pm2, so I just reckon they should make a right handed compression lock native. The caged ball bearing lock would be really cool but Spyderco seems to be much more comfortable making knives with the compression lock for some reason. Would love to see more knives with the CBBL
Edit: So my first native 5 was delivered the other day and I still want a compression lock native 5 but my god this is the best backlock I have ever experienced, it’s ridiculously smooth, and after disassembly and lubing with gunny glide it’s 100% flickable which I’ve heard a lot of people have trouble with for whatever reason

Guilty - got plenty of PM2, Para 3, and Manix 2 variants. Started with Para 3 and still my favorite model. Have my first Native coming this week. Yet to try the Shaman. I am sure I will like it. Next is the Sage 5. Basically the same design with a compression lock.

    • @HeWhoIsWhoHeIs
      @HeWhoIsWhoHeIs 2 года назад

@@paulf4133 I see. Well in that case, I hope spyderco comes through for you and makes a native with a compression lock!
In the meantime, I recommend the Manix 2, which is probably as close as you're going to get. Same blade shape, more or less. 3" legal, solid construction, and the cage ball lock which is just as strong and secure as the compression lock. Stronger, some would argue.
The Manix 2 is possibly my all time favorite EDC.... Once I upgraded to a titanium cage!
I assume the only reason you want a native 5 with a compression lock is because you feel the lock is stronger, or you like the fact that you can close the blade without your fingers in the blade path, right? Both are also true of the caged ball bearing lock. So that along with the size restrictions and blade shape, the Manix 2 is probably the perfect choice for you.
      Best of luck!

I think I agree that the mid back-lock is a big reason the Native 5 is in the shadows of the compression lock. Weirdly though, I fidget more with my Endela than Para3 - and I honestly don't know why! Any lock change on the Native would be a total redesign, so not really a Native anymore. Cheers mate! And yes, I'm looking at getting one ;)

I like lockbacks and love the blade shape. The reason I passed on this was lack of hardware for the price. I have practically the same thing in the form of the efficient no I don't get the nice steel's but I don't mind sharpening either. If I'm going to pay 126$ for a knife yes I whould buy the manix2 in g10 scales s30v steel and steel liners I like to have my money's worth.

I prefer the lines of the Native series to the PM2 or Para. The Chief is cool if a little large, and weirdly Knifecenter actually has the REX 45 Chief sprint run in stock right now, which I feel like supports your contention that the back lock is an issue for some people. And I think you're right.

When I was considering getting a Spyderco I was very strongly debating between this and the Sage 5. I ultimately went with the Sage 5 due to the combination of the compression lock and the presence of a thumb ramp for ergo purposes.
Doesn't mean that I won't still get a Native 5 because I was already in the hobby of collecting pocket knives at that time, and in some ways still appreciate them.

  • @jjm6187

Switching to native 5 because the compression lock doesn’t keep black closed when dropped and also opens easier in the pocket. I carry pen and keys in pocket and my pm3l has opened up before. The lock back is more rigid and thus safer imo

I own the PM2, PM3, Manix, Shaman, and Native 5, and without a doubt the Native is my favorite by far. It’s not even a close choice. And the Rex 45 steel on my Native 5 is the best steel I’ve ever used in my 40 years of collecting. The 4V in my PM3 is runner up, but not even close to the Rex 45.

I looked at the Para 3 and Native at a local shop. I bought the Para 3 and I am madly in love with it. The compression lock is so intuitive and the the G10 scales feel great. I sliced up a bunch of boxes today and I was super impressed with the handling and the way the Para 3 sliced. I will say the Para 3 feels a little bulky in my pocket, but it's gonna work out just great. It has become my benchmark reference. (not BenchMade ..see what I did there?) LOL

I think the one missing knife that should here is the LC200N one. Also, for me the fidget factor is one of the most important factors of a knife. 90% of the time I spend with my knife is NOT cutting, its playing with it. But i get that as an actual tool, this can definitely be overlooked.

Availability has really tanked. I found a good source with several options however and decided on the G10 linerless G10 version in S110v. I think G10 will be superior to FRN due to the bronze washers but I am wondering if I made the wrong decision vs the CF version. I might need to get more down the road. When are they going to make more.

I think you maybe underplayed the one-handed closure. You’re right you’re not opening and closing all the time but when working you often need to keep one hand on the object and the other putting your knife away.
