The humility displayed by a man at the very top of his profession is inspiring. You can almost hear Bateman and Arnett's ego's being crushed. Dafoe talking about a simple life in Italy with two guys hard pressed to survive outside their bubbles. Meanwhile, Hayes is his ever likeable self, asking solid questions. Great combination of personalities. Really enjoyed this one.
Love this show. What a treat to listen to Willem speak. Back in the 90’s id be in Yoga classes with him in the room. Humble & so talented. Boondock Saints ✨👏🏽
34:58 it is exactly what I needed to hear today too. I just moved to Texas from Idaho and I'm experienced in my field of work but because my new company is under construction it has been nice to let that ego rest and the time I could be spending talking about myself is refocused to how can I be a positive guidance through their transition. ❤
Hearing you talk about Whitewater made me feel famous for 10 seconds! I got my bachelor's there after growing up in a tiny WI town of 800 people. Love the tiny people shout-out.
I always love great conversations or in depth interviews with Wilhelm Defo. One of the few artist actors who's still around searching out challenging work & holds to the view that art should be provocative, challenging and at times uncomfortable along with entertaining . . . . Seems the polar opposite of what so much of the commercial world of film has become. Though he's realistic and honest enough to admit that one needs to work for a decent paycheck every now and then as well. To Live and Die In L.A. The Boondock Saints. Wild At Heart. Antichrist. Pasolini. The Lighthouse. The Northman. Dog Eat Dog. etc. etc. Just an incredibly rich and impressive career.
What a fabulous interview. Especially loved his discussion about his farm and his animals. Also, dear interviewers, you do have quite a following in WI!
So many iconic performances But I'll always remember two off the top of my head Platoon when he realizes that Berenger was going to shoot him And the dual personalities in the mirror during 1st Spiderman Tobey
His name was the focal point of an episode of "How I Met Your Mother" But he is such a wonderful person!!!! I am so happy to hear him with you guys! What a wonderful man!!!
You good Smartless folks better be thinking about riding this concept and these 3 legends for all it's worth. I just sit and reflect after another intriguing in depth inside the biz interview. I think it's the fact that the interview team is so very talented and "adult" combined with all being so experienced with the product, and with all the moving parts that go into creating works of art. Actors on actors in interview is tops in my book. Better than Actor's Studio type formats for me because they really show more of the entire human being. That's just my sense anyway. The expert way that each of these hosts form that bond of trust and respect with their guests is just spooky good. And they team up so well in pursuit of that goal. The goal being an enjoyable adult "fun" and interesting conversation. I'm squarely in the demo age and interest wise. The insider stories and shop talk aspects of the Smartless brand is pure gold for me, personally speaking. I am utterly hooked on this stuff. But can Sean and Bateman smack down a little more often on Arnett? It feels like he gets a bit big for his britches now and then. 🤔 😆 Because this thing is a triple alchemy type deal to me. The chemistry and bond between those three special alpha dogs is just a kick in the pants to watch. And their immense talent is showcased in every episode. I don't even skip the ads anymore...their darn pitches and persuasive voices almost...almost inspire me to break my lifetime "no click through purchases" rule. That never happens. What a guest...what an authentic and satisfying interview. Deft and respectful. Speaking of needing to be just that...When is Staff Sergeant Barnes comin' in? 😉 🙏 Thanks for this.
Ah there was a time when seeing "The Last Temptation of Christ" was going to piss your family off. I had a VHS bootleg with Videodrome as the second movie on that tape. My mother had no clue that William Dafoe was the same actor in Spiderman. She liked Spiderman.
Love you guys but you are not prepared for your downtown NYC guests like David Byrne or Willem Dafoe. The Wooster Group is a seminal post-modern+ theatre group from which Defoe’s approach to movie acting is informed. The interview could have been exponentially more interesting if you knew the history of your guest. Same with David Byrne - an amazing writer and filmmaker as well as musician. If you go beyond your LA crowd, please know your guest. You’re fabulous. Thanks.
As a person who has grown up in Wisconsin and still lives here I really hate hiw much he rips on Wisconsin. Kind of annoying and almost made me stop listening to this episode.
Yuck. Not his fault but my god this one was boring. They are in a real dry spell with Jen Psaki, Willem, and now Kara Swisher? We’ve run out of accessible A list actors it seems…

Fun and funny conversation all

Omg that was the best "bye" so far! Great episode!

Awww...I like WD! What a fun discovery he's such a cool person.
Seen many of his movies always intense. This was the opposite laid back and open. Enjoyed it.
His philosophical approach to life & acting is awesome

The wisdom shared in this interview is invaluable.
Im sure you could find SOMEthing valuable about it.
Cheers from France, international market is real! You guys are addicting. Bon anniversaire Sean!

I loved this.
You can tell when an actor is having a good time in a role - just like in Life Aquatic. Love Willem in that movie.
Fantastic! Anyone who doesn't love Mr. Dafoe, then they really are Martians....
What a fabulous interview. Especially loved his discussion about his farm and his animals.

So many iconic performances

Love the show
Great interview--Dafoe is so intelligent about his art and life. I love alpacas too--but there is the smell! LOL

It's a joke... I love Will.
the french fries in the intro bit was 🌶☕🌭♨ one of the best actor in the league, togo+at eternity's gate, inside, the lighthouse were beasts 💪
Brilliant actor, Ya Know... Interesting stories, Ya know...Great guest, Ya know...
He sounds very Wisconsin lol ... maybe one day I'll see him at the Tailgates of Lambeau Field, 2 miles from my house.
I want to see you!!!

57th street. New, tall, empty buildings
It's amazing how much he's accomplished after starving to death on a frozen lake with Lurie.
Hey Will, can you get me Jason Bateman's autograph?
❤❤❤❤❤😂

Who here wants them to bring on the awesome Alfred Molina?
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
DAFOE is a brilliant actor. Well done. Most actors since the 90’s absolutely blow. Like embarrassing. Terrible.
