Hi Jim...watching these 11 tutorials I was encouraged to buy Luminar AI and make the conversion from L4. The download and install all went well but the program does take some time to load on my i5 Win 10 machine; the dng files from my Huawei P30Pro weigh it at 79Mb and these take a full minute to load....yeah, ok, my machine is mediocre. The point of my post is to thank you for all that you do for us mere mortals of the photo editing world. Where else would we access such high quality instruction? Oh, by the way, I used your promo code for this (and Aurora HDR as well)...thanks for the discount and I hope Skylum give you some commission; I've popped a bit in your tip jar too....enjoy a taco, beer or whatever on me.
Excellent quick breakdown of the local masking Jim. looks a lot quicker and easier than layers. Having the option of up to 10 masks as well. I think they do need to add in the ability to name each mask though.
A great tutorial about masking. In the beta version Luminar AI version, there are 5-6 Edit Tools can be chosen under Local Mask. However there are only two Edit Tools (Basic, Texture) available under Local Mask. Do you know whether Skylum will provide more Edit Tool options for Local Mask in the future?
Thanks Mr. Jim for an excellent video. What is the difference in the LOCAL MASKING and the masking which is available with each tool except Basic ? Is it that local masking is the masking tool for the basic tab ? Also it is doing only the basic tab, so will it do ALMOST everything which layer does ?
Thanks Alok. Local masking has just a certain set of sliders, whereas the masking on each tool lets you add that feature selectively. So local masking is close to offering what the Light tool does, but it lets you mask it in multiple times. So yes it is somewhat like a masking tool for the Light adjustment, but not entirely. It's just a way to take common features and use them again and again. It does replace a lot of what layers can do but not everything. But I have not needed layers for my work since getting Luminar AI, so it has been fine for me. Thanks.
Hi Jim, thank you for all the tutorials - great introduction. A specific question about masking. If I’m masking HSL changes how to I use multiple masks for the different colours?
Hi Steve and thanks for watching. There is not a way to use multiple masks for the different colors. I have previously shared this same feedback with Skylum and my hope is that they add that to local masking in the future. Fingers crossed. 🙏🏻 Thanks!
Thanks Jim, great masking tutorial. I don't own Luminar AI yet but I was wondering as you were using the painting brush, is there support to use a pressure tablet such as Wacom? If not do you think it's necessary that Skylum does? Thanks again and have a Merry Christmas! P.S. I hope you have a special treat for your puppy!!
Thanks Jim. Excellent as always! Question - If you paint with 20% opacity, and you go back and forth over the same area, I assume it stays at 20%. If you release your finger then reapply more 20% over the original 20%, does it become 40%? Second question - off topic: What tools are you using to display your tutorials? How are you recordng your screen and does the same tool give you the fly-away PIP perspective? Thanks and Merry Christmas! Mark
Hi there and thanks much. Yes every time you release the mouse and start again in the same area, it increase in intensity. For these videos, I use Screenflow which is Mac only. It allows me to capture my screen, myself via my webcam, and my mic all in one app. Then I can edit etc from there. It works quite well. Thanks!
Outstanding video and I’m seriously considering buying AI. During lockdown I’ve looked at tons of masking videos for light room only to be confused frustrated and becoming a complete failure. I was ready to give up until watching this. The masking ability here appears to produce the same results that the snobby pros take hours to produce. Thank you. One favor. Could you please enlarge areas of the panel you are working on? I view most things on the phone and my old eyes produce their own masks. Second...how about a simple video on the shot cut keys, organizing files and file export?
thanks for watching and glad this helped, and it is quite easy in Luminar AI for sure - and thanks for the feedback and suggestions too, will look into those thanks
I prefer the way they handled this in L4, to be honest. It was more straightforward, and there were layers. Having used Photoshop since 2000, I'm comfortable with layers and masking. Currently, I find myself switching back and forth between L4 and AI. I don't plan to ask for a refund, because I think they'll continue to improve AI, but on Windows anyway, it's not yet as good as L4.
@@kill4kid yeah there are times they are needed, although admittedly it has been less than I thought. But agreed it was a key feature of L4 that will be missed.
Great video Jim! I guess I see masking somewhat differently. Although some "masking" is soft-edged, meaning you create and work a mask based on circular or linear gradients, I see that workflow more as selectively applying a filter. True masking should allow one to define hard edges and change parameters, or something like luminosity. For example, I find myself trying to remove wires in an image with the erase or cloning tools. Sometimes it works well, and other times its a disaster by hand. What if you have a car you want to place against a plain background? Another workflow would be moving an object from one side of the image to another, ie a sailboat on the horizon. It seems Luminar is targeting basic magic and not professional techniques like they said.
can you not use the clone/stamp to move a sailboat? Because there are not layers there seems to be no way to do composites other than adding a texture and it is not overly moveable as there is no move tool/function. if you don't have the manual yet, you can get the html and the .pdf here manual.skylum.com/
@@phlotographer I tried clone and stamp. Couldn’t figure out how to make make the background transparent in the clone before stamping. #creativitysucks

The sailboat should replace the water and now you have two sailboats. Only one the one? Seemed the the idea so use either erase or c/s and get rid of the unwanted sailboat. Keep in mind that this is not a selection so there is no means to resize so depending upon the image, relative size of the boat and its position is going to be relevant in where you place the stamped sailboat. I hope this will work. Jim would likely be able to assist better than me as he is one of our gurus thankfully.
Hi James and thanks, and yes the masking in Luminar AI is pretty much for selectively applying a filter. It is not edge-aware or anything like that, so very specific selections can be a challenge. And there is not a way to remove a background and replace it, bc there are no layers. Similar thing for moving an object - you can't really cut it out and move it, bc there is no tool for selecting it etc. You can try the clone and stamp idea as @phlotographer kindly mentions, but I personally feel it would mostly frustrate you. It would have to be a relatively simple thing for that to work. Luminar is not really targeting these more advanced use cases. Thanks for watching!
Hey Jim, looking at masking in something like the Color tab under Essentials, I can't see how I could create 2 different masks for 2 different colors - eg a mask to change H/S/L of the blue of the water, and another mask to change the H/S/L yellow of the sand, and say another mask to change the H/S/L of a pink umbrella.
