  • The Titan, a submersible purpose built by Ocengate for diving the 12,500 feet to the Titanic wreck suffered a catastrophic implosion on Sunday Jun 18, 2023 at around 9:30am local Titanic time.
    A crew meber on board the Polar Prince support ship for the final mission has provided some previously unkown information information about the last moments and confirmed that the so called leaked transcript of text messages between sub and topside is a forgery and hoax.

    One of the reasons I watch your channel is because I believe you do your homework and it's not just a bunch of sensationalized rubbish for clicks. I didn't believe the leaked transcript and am really glad someone on board has reached out to you. Lately I was wondering how much longer it will be before we have a public hearing or any kind of announcement of any findings. Given they just fairly recently recovered at least one major piece of the Titan it may still be a long way off.
    Unfortunately, we humans sometimes have little patience, and I think that's part of why that transcript caught on with so many people. High drama is more interesting than what may very well have happened. The crew may very well have not known anything was coming and then suddenly it was already over with. Like the Byford Dolphin accident, which had dramatic injuries, but those men likely never registered a single moment of that experience. It was over in an instant. I truly do hope the crew on board the Titan did not know or feel anything and highly suspect that is actually the case.

    Thank you for the information and coverage of this topic. I've reassessed my view on this quite a bit. The transcript reads more easily as a decently-penned melodrama than as a pragmatic log of actual events. You've pointed out a lot of finer details in the transcript that just don't add up upon closer scrutiny. Particularly the final message from your source, which is in line with how Pogue, who almost certainly has also been in contact with crew members, said the communications might look. Not to mention the mismatched timeline and how the sub was actually expected to behave. Great sobering evaluation put forth here.

      I don't know where everybody gets this "no warning" nonsense from. The implosion itself would be near instantaneous, sure. Doesn't mean that leading up to that there wouldn't be PLENTY of auditory indication of what was about to happen. Especially with a composite material, which would be popping and cracking as the plies were slowly delaminating under tiny deformation (before outright failure).

To the crew, everything may have seemed normal, and their brains would not have had time to register the implosion.

    Dear Mike, great drawing at5:45! It very well shows the damage the connecting ring(s) suffered. Hoisting a recovered ring clearly shows this has occured; an edge is sticking out, torn for a long distance, yet still attached to the ring.
    Poor design: the least difference in compression from the titanium to the fiber material leads to the edges section from the mother ring. If those titanium ends are machine turned, I guess, the sharp 90°corner line for the edges equals to a breaking line.
    Any way, the (too) often reported cracking sounds, indicating there is movement, is not originating from the titanium elements. This is a heard demonstrated reoccurent conflict!

    Another great video Mike. One thing that led me to think there was validity to the transcript is in the video clip you show at 2:54, which I have also shown a few times on my videos, from that BBC documentary from 2 years ago. If you look at the transcript on screen at 2:54, and look at the time stamp for the sub at [10:13:28] you can see in red letters, the sub has indeed typed in almost a full sentence. So I don't think they always typed in 1-letter codes, and so I doubt that you can say this is fake just by using the argument that the sub would never communicate in sentences, because we see theyhave indeed used full words.

You write with full confidence that the bang corresponded to the implosion, but could that have been known with absolutely 100% certainty at the time?
      The problem I saw with the transcript, right from the start, is that it was just too melodramatic, spinning a story like a kids TV program. My best guess is that the DSV was fine until it suddenly wasn't. I find it fascinating that some people have taken that transcript and woven a tale around it involving leaks, loss of buoyancy, too rapid a descent (do you think too rapid a descent would be a problem for an otherwise good hull?), warning noises etc.

    @MikeBell Taking the datum that you give (dropped weights.3400 meters, 90 min) we can calculate the average downward speed of ~ 38 meters/min. If the downward acceleration was constant ( a reasonable assumption ) the downward speed would be ~76 meters/min. at 3400 meters, 90 min. If that acceleration is not altered, Titan would be on the the seabed at ~ 95.2 min. with a downward speed of ~ 80 meters/min. If the downward acceleration was somehow reduced to zero, Titan would arrive at the seabed at ~ 95.3 min. with a downward speed of ~ 76 meters/min. If it reached the seabed intact and parted the acoustic anomaly would occur between the two times stated. One more data point would speak volumes about what happened.

The structural stress of it being transported over rough water was probably never calculated mainly the heavy equipment in the back tail. Again all that jolting stress on poorly glued joints. The pressure at those depths is more than the pressure used in water jet cutters that can slice through 6" steel like butter. So if there was any kind of problem with the pressure hull - even a pinhole - the water ingress would have totally destroyed the ship and everything inside it in a small fraction of a second. So any long discussions of hull damage have to be fake. Dropping weights and having problems controlling the vessel are possible communications - but no more than that.

    One of the questions I've had about the "transcript" regards the absence of navigational instructions. I know very little about deep submersible operation, but was under the impression that the crew topside provided navigation support to Titan via the messaging system. If so, would the actual transcript include such instructions?

    • @Mike-Bell
      @Mike-Bell  6 месяцев назад +3

      Excellent point. Top side tracked the sub and where able to also able datum it off GPS. That was the only way that Titan knew where they were and as you point out not a single location messaged to Titan to navigate and tweak their location relative to the wreck.

      Hi Mary
      NIST had a day long update on Champlain Towers South a couple of motnths ago which I listened to very careful and with great interest. I plan to do a summary video of their findings when I get a chance. I am happy to say the failure hypothesis they are leaning towards is pretty much what I illustrated in my video 3 of the collapse. Basically they are saying it was woefully underdesigned structure particularly on punch shear rebar with poorly placed rebar which worsened the weakness. The pool deck collpased at its point of longest span and the pool deck fataly damaged/crippled 3 tower columns which buckled after 7 miunutes.
      NIST estimate their final report will be out in about 1.5 years.

    • @maudessen573
      @maudessen573 6 месяцев назад +3

      @@Mike-Bell I still follow the NIST investigation closely. I felt glad that they did their best to reveal as much of their hypothesis as possible, but without committing to it as final, during the last public session. They seem very sympathetic towards families of the victims. We must also remember that NIST is tasked not only with a plausible failure theory but also with developing recommendations to avoid future failures. It’s a daunting task that is much more difficult than analyzing the cause of building collapses after being rammed by jets filled with fuel.

    Titan's last message was "drpd 2w" meaning "dropped 2 weights" - that means they WERE trying to go back up prematurely, so.. they knew (or at least Stockton Rush knew) something was wrong enough to start dropping weights before they reached the sunken Titanic ship... He thought his warning system would give him enough time to rise back up, but it didn't...

    • @Mike-Bell
      @Mike-Bell  Месяц назад

      You didn’t listen to the video fully. Dropped 2 weights meant they were dropping half the descent weights for a soft landing. Normal procedure. It didn’t mean there was anything wrong in fact it meant all was going normally.

    • @nessat6335
      @nessat6335 Месяц назад +1

      @@Mike-Bell But it was NOT normal (also they technically NEVER had plans of LANDING - soft or otherwise - just hovering and navigating above the Titanic wreckage.. just saying). Anyway. The way ALL contact was lost 1hr 45min into the exploration (coms AND tracking, which were 2 separate systems - this was mentioned by James Cameron AND confirmed by OceanGate for Titan specifically - that coms and tracking were 2 completely separate systems, both lost at the same time) and the location of the Titan wreckage being 485 meters away from the Titanic wreckage -- absolutely proved that things were NOT going normally...
      TLDR: Loss of contact with BOTH communication and navigation systems means time of implosion was 1hr 45mins into the dive. Location of wreckage was 485 meters away from the Titanic wreckage they were going to explore. These 2 facts prove that things were NOT going normally.
      PS: OceanGate DID say dropping 2 weights this early was normal, but... When someone's literal track record is "90 dives with 13 successful descents but 77 failed and they had to surface early", and those people tell you something is """normal""" ..... take that with a grain of salt! :P
      PPS: The failed dives were all non-fatal until the last one, so yeah, Stockton Rush really did (wrongly) believe that if something was wrong he'd be able to go back up successfully.
      PPPS: We know carbon fiber isn't for deep sea exploration because it WEARS OUT TOO MUCH OVER TIME because this material WAS tested by OTHERS, extensively... this whole thing is really sad

    Thank you sir for your video and explanations. Regardless of how it imploded, whether they heard prior warning sounds, or anything else, it was a sad day for explorers and exploration. Five families are forever changed from the tragic demise. Mike, in the “fake” transcript that I heard online, it said they were descending much faster than they should have according to their depth and elapsed time in the dive. My question is sir, do you believe this to be the case, and would it have made any difference in the outcome had they descended at a slower pace if in fact they descended too fast?

    • @Mike-Bell
      @Mike-Bell  6 месяцев назад

      Hey Brett
      There was no too fast descent. The crew member said nothing about high descent speed. The depth for that descent time was routine.
      Completely dismiss the leaked transcript. Another red flag for the leaked transcpript is the ship asking depth data from the sub. The support ship was responsible for location of the sub because it had the powerful equipment and could reference to GPS so it had much better data. The sub only had a depth reading and no location so you would expect the ship to be feeding tracking info the to the sub.

    Interesting, not sure there are any models of this factor however: When they pulled the craft with the ship,, waves etc would put stress on the "landing gear" frame. I don't think the submarine was constructed to handle this kind of "stres". That would be pulling ånd pushing, not pressure. I can imagine that this would create small flaws... that under pressure could become big.

Here, for instance in the first minute, the "aft pressure dome" is also called "the titanium hemisphere". Why not standardize on a part 'name' so as to avoid confusion for the layman?
