- The AR-18 is a gas-operated, selective-fire rifle chambered for 5.56×45mm NATO ammunition. The AR-18 was designed at ArmaLite in California by Arthur Miller, Eugene Stoner, George Sullivan, and Charles Dorchester in 1963 as an alternative to the AR-15 design, which had just been selected by the U.S. military as the M16. While the AR-18 was never adopted as the standard service rifle of any nation, its production licence was sold to companies in Japan and the United Kingdom, and it is said to have influenced many later weapons such as the British SA80, the Singaporean SAR-80 and SR-88, the American Adaptive Combat Rifle, and the Heckler and Koch G36. Through the Provisional IRA, which was noted for its use of the rifle, the rifle became known as the "widow maker".

The Japanese made their version of this masterpiece, the Howa Type 89, and it accepts STANAG magazines.
The AR-18 also might have influenced the H&K G36 and SA80.
It absolutely influenced both of these=

I remember that assault rifle from The Terminator (1984). That rifle has no stock, and 40-round magazines taped together in a jungle-style sort of way. The T-800 uses it (one-handedly) on the police station attack.

I never understood why this wasn't favored over the AR-15. The direct impingement system in the 15's makes cleaning an all too common occurrence.
I don't now why either but my guess is the cost maybe is less with the ar15 becuz there is no piston? and it requires one more spring perhaps idk
From what I've read, it was purely due to circumstance. The ar-15 was already commercially successful, so I guess nobody had the ambition to re-outfit the existing infrastructure for ar-18 production. We basically got shafted out of a superior rifle for shitty reasons. The benefits of the gas impingement system don't justify how often the rifle needs cleaned, in my opinion.
But didn't the AR16/AR18 designs eventually lead to the inception of the ACR?

Behind the scenes wise, the film crew definitely used an AR-18 and not a converted AR-180.

Are you trying to figure out if the brn180 upper is compatible with a m16/m4/ full auto ar15 lower
@@brendanakers7294 totally different fire control group and FA actuation on the AR-18 vs M16. The autosear on an M16 is in the lower, next to the FCG. On an AR-18, it is actually attached to the upper. Since the BRN is a hybrid, it would likely work on a registered full auto lower since the the auto function is self contained.

not much of a success in itself, but nearly every other battle rifle made uses its bolt and gas system...besides the ar15/m16/m4 variants...
Just a little FYI the ar platform is not a “battle rifle” that would be considered a rifle chambered in a full power cartridge such as 308. A 556 is an intermediate carriage so a m4 would be considered a infantry rifle. Sorry couldn’t help myself

It would be much easier to watch the detail without the rifle moving back with the recoil though.
The mechanism is different from AR-15 and made by different technology (by stamping mostly). But generally it so much reminds AR-15.
Is excess gas allowed to escape via a forward vent?
The rifle was also commonly called either "me little armalite" or "my little armalite" by the Irish Republican Army (IRA)
They nicknamed it widowmaker. Armalite is the actual company who made it
@Eammon Wright yeah I know, it's down along the fall road blah blah up the RA, but either way, calling it an armalite is wrong, because armalite made a lot of guns, not just ar18s, which are bad ass( I have a 180)
@Eammon Wright I also have a decommissioned rpg7, it was $900 on gunbroker lol but eh, it's not as easy as my ar15 is, but it's not hard. As for accuracy, it works as well as my ar15 does, and the folding stock is a brilliant touch.

@Eammon Wright I prefer the m4 carbine. It was issued to me when i was 17, and i fell in love with it. The ar180 has more of a history type feel to it, but the m4 will always be my favorite. I dont want no girl next door, I just want my m4!

@@SMD234WG It's not. Being fully automatic and chambered for an intermediate rifle caliber, the AR18 would be an assault rifle. Battle rifles typically are chambered for full-power rifle rounds like .308 winchester, 30-06 springfield, etc.

A better system than AR 15. Reliable and cleaner platform. HK also switch from delayed blowback to short stroke gas system in term of reliability and simplicity. In term of accuracy this system much more accurate than long stroke gas system of ak 47.
Too bad that U.S. government didn't know anything about its advantage until now.

Man, I wish this gun is here in my country. Thing seems easy and cheap to copy. Ghost guns in this model would be more effective due to the simplicity compared to the shitty M16 and AK47 ghost copies I find on local gun runners.

this video is bad. should have slowed it down and gotten a good look at the mechanisms. you just fire it full speed a million times while moving around.
Take a close look at first, the gun fires when the trigger is released no depressed. FYI, there are no guns on Earth with that trigger mech
