- The Happy Camper has another Whisky Fireside Chat during Ontario, Canada's third Covid lockdown. This time, bushcraft master Paul Kirtley returns to chat about his new book Wilderness Axe Skills & Campcraft. It's an amazingly detailed book on using and maintaining an axe, saw and knife on wilderness trips - and the cool camp craft you can make with the same tools.
It's always a pleasure listening to Paul Kirtley and he's taught me so much over the years that I feel I must get his book just to pay him back in a small way...and I know it will be worth every penny.
Great conversation, Kevin, with lots of useful tips.
Cheers,
- Martin
Thank you for your positive words Marin.
About an outdoorsman reading a lot -- Mors Kochanski's library was quite impressive. Glad to hear Paul has the same attitude.
Paul’s techniques are excellent. They have made me much safer and efficient in the woods (particularly splitting wood). I’ve taught many of his techniques to my kids.
Paul is surprisingly very skilled. Yes, I said 'surprisingly', because he is soft spoken, easy going, and not a show off, but he knows his stuff, and more. He is skilled in more than with cutting tools; his knowledge of wild plants is astounding; his canoeing skills are excellent; and he is able to teach AND do as well, both survival and bushcraft techniques that are sound (no bullshit or half-fast) and functional. I bet that book is excellent (mine is on order). Much respect. Check him out.
Thank you.
Agreed. The fact that he's not a show off and articulate is appealing. Pre-ordered the book.
I recognise that spatula 😀, another great presentation Kevin, Paul is a great teacher, perfectionist and all round great person, camp life is a blast with him, when he is teaching he is faultless, when he is telling campfire tales he is a brilliant character, this also goes for the rest of his team at Frontier Bushcraft.
Take care Kevin 👍👍👍🇬🇧😷☕
Totally agree with this Nigel!
I’m 70 years old and been tripping for many years and learn something from Paul every time and also you Kevin. I appreciate chats like this. I’m going out tomorrow to order Paul’s book. Thanx guys
A great chat between two fantastically knowledgeable people. Wonderful to watch, thanks for sharing.
could listen to these two all night,,great interview
great to see you again Stay safe and we hope you have a wonderful weekend We hope everything works out well with the Book Love and Light Sarah and Glenn
Thank you!
Having done a Frontier Bushcraft course it’s easy to see how Paul had too much to fit in the book. There is such a depth of knowledge on even simple techniques. Can my wait for my copy to arrive.
Thanks Mike :-)
Wow. I am by no means a beginner camper and I actually learned a few practical things from this chat. I wasn't expecting that. Looking forward to getting the book.
Thanks for another great Whisky Fire Side Chat.
Really informative chat. Will definitely be purchasing Paul's book. Thanks guys.
Great chat guys!👍👍 look forward to getting the book.
That was super fun to watch. Thx Paul and Kevin. Great stuff
Thanks! I hope you are both well!
great interview, you guys are lucky in america to have the book before europe
Just bought and received 2 copies of your book Paul. One for my neighbor in case he ever wants to borrow my ax. This chat with KC is the perfect primer. Thanks and all the best to you.
Thanks. Enjoy.
I laugh when I heard him talk about the spoon, as a scout master and being on camp trip and the boys come up telling me they forgot their utensils I tell them to go get their penknife and I find a stick to hand them and tell them that if they want to eat they have to make a spoon. Non of them ever missed a meal but they all have a wooden spoon and carry it with pride. Also, when new scouts start sharing that they forgot their utensils they hand them a stick and tell them to carve a spoon if they want to eat. Good show!
Thank you for that informative talk on Axe skill! So interesting.
Great chat from some great chaps.
Glad you thought so :-)
Great chat with some great lessons. Lessons I could have known prior to a visit to the Parry Sound ER
This was absolutely brilliant. It's made me extremely curious about what other skills he has to offer in his book. It's pretty amazing; the craft and skills behind all the different styles of axes and their specific purposes. It's also surprising how fast it can seemingly change and potentially disappear.
I feel like I learned a ton from this chat. Thanks, Kevin!
Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed the chat. I hope you also find the book useful. Best, Paul
Glad you got this Brit on
Preordered off Amazon today. Thanks for the recommendation. I have a new Toronto Blacksmith carving axe to use this year.
I pre-ordered the book last night while listening/watching this.
Thank you.
Two of my favorites! Well done.
Awesome video! Learnt a lot
It kind of reminds me of martial arts schools and instructors. It's interesting that we're at an age where living and surviving as human beings is somewhat a mysterious lore.
Awesome, Kirtley eh.
Aye.
I just read the article on fake bushcrafters and it was excellent hitting the nail on the head. I have been teaching young people in Scouting to survive in the woods for over thirty years. Most people when they stay put are seldom lost for more than one night and most people have no tools. This is why building a simple debris shelter is the best bushcraft skill someone can have. Another essential skill to know is no trace camping. Maybe the parks will have to have a new rule about building shelters and other bushcrafting nonsense to try and curb the idiots out there.
Hey Kevin - great interview. Is Paul’s book available locally?
Hi Gord, yes the book is being distributed in Canada and should be available in traditional bookstores as well as through online retailers in Canada. Thanks for your interest.
@@PaulKirtley I tried amazon the other night and it said the book was not released yet. I am not sure what that means but it will be worth the wait.
His book is coming today thanks to amazon canada
I have noticed that some other Ontario RUclipsr(s) is ignoring Ontario Stay-At-Home Order and doing overnighter(s) camping in Crownland.
What do you & the viwers think about that?
If you’re outside chances of you catching anything is slim to none I don’t have a problem with it I don’t wear a mask outside only when I go in stores and that’s over now here in orange county California people are still wearing masks inside and outside they are not proper mask mostly homemade not n95 but it’s not mandatory I think maybe their beauty impaired and are being polite And didn’t want to burn peoples eyes after a year and a half !ha ha
