  • This is my experience at DALMAC 2022. This is the first bike tour I've ever done so I didn't know exactly what to expect. There are a handful of different route options and the one I rode was the 3-day East route starting in Gladwin, MI and ending in Mackinaw, MI.

The rail-trails are definitely what I prefer, better scenery and you tend to have them all to yourself at this time of year. The highways are kind of a nightmare and usually have narrow shoulders. Having semi trucks and other vehicles blowing past you a few feet away gets kind of unnerving after a while. Some trails are kind of rough/poor, some are in amazing, smooth condition.

If I was planning my own route I would definitely stick to rail trails as much as possible. I asked one of the volunteers why they don't utilize the trails more and they said it's hard to provide SAG support. But I figure the more cars that zoom past me the higher the probability that one of the drivers will be drunk/high/distracted/falling asleep and drift onto the shoulder.
