I agree that Chopper didn't change character after the timeskip except for being more confident. But what i don't quite like is, is that his abilities were cut down to basically only Monster-Point and Kungfu-Point, I understand that there is no point for the other forms after he got those two forms but it makes his fights not as interesting as they were pre time skip. But i do admit that the Monster-Point was perfect for the fight against Perospero and Queen.

The pannelling problem was probably born out of necessity: if Oda wants to keep his current scope, he has to either keep pages dense or make the story longer. It's understandable to want to finish the series as long as this before age catches up. And since this is Oda's passion project and Magnum opus, I don't think he can bear to reduce the scope he wants.

I feel like a lot of the argument against the crammed panel feels like it's done out of bad faith. If Oda do want to emphasize a moment of peace and tranquility or intense focus on a specific character's emotion, he would've simply minimalised the paneling. And we can clearly see that even in post-timeskip with the example given by Puff in this video. He does it a lot. People are just ignoring the context of the scene.

I'm constantly validated for not participating in op community discourse. Luffy isn't libertarian, Skypiea has always been awesome, Usopp has been a brave warrior of the sea since chapter 35, arbitrary arguments about pre and post timeskip are inherently flawed and usually heavily trained by recency bias or nostalgia.

Around WCI I watched a video where they mentioned that Chopper hasn't done anything in forever, and I was thinking "yeah that's a shame, Chopper has only done...." at which point I realised Chopper has been doing relevant things constantly. A lot of this whinging I chalk up to week-to-week fever, everybody just has way too much time over and over and over thinking every detail imaginable, constantly having to re-calibrate as new chapters come out, building up expactations and then having them subverted. It's understandable, but I can only attribute the 6 hour Drizzt video to some profound brainrot and a truly unhealthy obsession.
I mean it's stupid when people treat Dragon Ball Saiyan saga onwards as a different series, but acting like pre- and post-timeskip is actually two different series is just complete lunacy, just as stupid as acting like Ennies Lobby and Water 7 are not one story arc. Calling "post-Ennies Lobby" another arc on top of that is pure insanity.
(To inject a bit of nuance in the footnote: 1) I'm not saying the term pre-/post-timsekip is dumb, it's a useful term, but it's not some kind of divider where the quality just drops off 2) I actually kinda agree that Water 7 and EL have 3 acts on their own, but everything from meeting Kokoro/Aokiji to the Sunny launching into the sky is one story arc)

But chopper had so many facettes as a character pre-timeskip. After that he just gets the worse Pikachu-treatment, because Pikachu actually does contribute to the anime. Like for example monster-chopper was one of the biggest hypes in one piece pre-timeskip. Post-timeskip it is just so disappointing everytime you see it and chopper barely uses it anyways. Also the whole chopper-having-8-zoan-forms-thing is just dropped. I can't even remember most of his timeskip-forms. The same goes for Franky. He was such a well rounded character. I think that the reason you get this sort of discussion comes a lot from how Dragonball's and Naruto's timeskips were handled in anime production. In the west people often talk about Dragonball and Dragonball Z being different series because of getting the later first thus shaping our perception of the narrative when it's just one story. Similar with Naruto and Shippuden, they're a single series tackling the same ideas and forming a single overarching narrative, but because they gave a different name to the post-timeskip adaptation it's viewed as a separate entity.

You set up 1) hey this is what people are saying, 2) hey this ain't right ... but then 3) okay let's talk about what the timeskip actually do tho. And I think because you sort of "cleared the air" on misconceptions, it allowed you to talk frankly about how some characters DO change meaningfully during the timeskip/after, but most are still the same character and should be treated as such.

Robin is largely a grappler in a series that prioritises hits; sadly I just don't think Oda knows what to do with her fighting style. It's a shame, for sure, but I'm not sure there's a good solution; her powers are pretty simply either overpower the opponent and win in an instant or struggle to do much with the main fights she has had being her limited in some way by not wanting to damage the ruins on Skypeia, or not wanting to just break the zombie Cindry in her team up with Chopper, or Trebel and Sugar both having touch based powers (and ya know, not wanting to break the neck someone she thought was a child) in her team up with Usopp. But that fight is also kinda important to mention because even though it's a two on two and doesn't get the fan focus the one on ones get it is one of the most important battles in all of the Dressrosa arc, we shouldn't be underselling Robins' importance here just because Usopp got the final "attack" (or arguably Sugar self destructed).
Now sure, Nami not having one on one fights is a little more confusing given he's been actively finding ways to give her power ups to keep up with the Haki lads (and I'd argue dropped the ball by not letting her climatact eat Monet's snow snow fruit after it got a soul/personality in Zeus, but to be fair there is time and we have a vegapunk on board now so it could be time) but she has been pretty consistently the best fighter for dealing with large groups barr Luffy for a long time. Shonen prioritises the one on one fight in structure, but I think Nami probably has more KOs under her belt than any of the big 4 barr Luffy who is of course the main character and is she could get an upgrade to her cold (snow snow) and heat (daughter flame) moves the way she's gotten a buff to lightning she should be able to keep that lead no issue.

My belief about the Post Timeskip is that because Oda had shelved all the strawhats for nearly 100 chapters, on top of adding new developments to them all, he didn't nail writing them immediately. It's kind of noticeable in the early arcs where each crewmember is trying to show off their cool new personalities they got from maturing over the past 2 years, but then in the later arcs, they just act more natural. It feels like even though they still show off their extremities sometimes, the characters are just back to being themselves again because Oda has simply honed how to use them

i got to admit i do like the manga>anime and pretimeskip>post time skip.
We used to get more focus on the crew, now there is so much going one. we don't even get much in between arks on the ship. banter and just....relaxing....
while arks have more chapters, in some ways we also feel like we rush past some ideas. wano being a notable example of this.
there is a moment in wano, where ussop and nami are talking and ussop said if he were captured, he would sell out the alliance right away. i REALLY wanted this to go somewhere. the best we got was when they fought ulti leading to an amazing nami moment.
but ussop getting captured could have led to some great moment. afraid but not giving in. just like luffy back when he was beat up by bluejams officer. he didn't have a notable roll during the raid anyway. so it would have been a better use of his character.
this is just one example in Wano alone. wasted opportunities and ideas.
Overall i love the one piece series, but it is far from perfect. we all know about characters living when they should have died.

I hard disagree, there's neat differences between pre and post time skips.
Just because a trend started in late pre skip you can't say it's not a post skip problem for expanding on it.
I think you dismiss how big of a change it is for the crew to take a less central role, they are the main cast after all, the people you've come to the show for.
Yes, it did start in impel down or at sabaody, but you can't say it characterizes pre time skip, unlike you can with post.
The fact that the crew physically isn't present is also key, i think that treating impel down and marineford as transitionary arcs between pre and post time skip is more than reasonable, since they're structurally much different from all other arcs, pre and post.
Also I really don't like how you responded to the criticism that robin takes a backseat role in post skip, citing how she didn't get any flights after skypiea, when she was at the center of the conflict of the two subsequent arcs.

I'm sorry but pre-timeskip just slaughters its sucessing half far and away on all of those points, and you're really just fooling yourself if you don't see it. It’s not cause they don’t choose to use her more they know how long even a lower budget episode takes. For example, Wano is an enormous arc and how many chapters did some of the Strawhat fights last? Wano is WAY too bloated and the Strawhats kind of feel like an afterthought. Even Kaido felt like an afterthought and he was supposed to be the big bad.

Brook has never even had an official 1-on-1 fight, but hes still proven him self as essential to the crew time and time again as a stealth agent (breaking caramels painting in WCI, Searching for intel in various arcs ETC.) you dont need fights to be relevant or important. It doesn't really matter if a character has major fights or not. Like half of the strawhats don't get major fights but that doesn't mean they aren't important, like Chopper doesn't fight but he still does so much for the team, like rescuing those goofy ass kids in Punk Hazard, taking control of the mirror world in Whole cake, and curing a fatal disease in less than an hour in Wano.

Sanji didn't really change though time skip/pre timeskip personality wise. It just blew it to over 9000 in excessive absurdity for running gag laughs in japan. Sanji's white knight code isn't fringed upon by his perve nature in punk hazard because he is a simp idiot when it comes to women. He was from day one. But Ivankov's island made him become excessive with it when before he was toned down some. So if a woman obsessed simp gets put in a womans body, he would act exactly as sanji did in punk hazard. Chopper is the same character with more experience with a altered design to sell plush toys. Which is completely the reason for the design change on him. He went from a beast man hybrid kinda cool looking to being a living plush doll look. That was marketing and toy inspired for the cash it would rake in from kids that want a Chopper plushy. The change in draw/animation style account for the new looks to Nami and Robin as the art style changed at fishman island. Nami and Robin got aged up two years and the altered style expanded their bust size. But when you see the older scenes reanimated you see the eyes have current look and body design just with the old hair style. Its also because after 20 years of doing it oda's drawing improved and he enhanced the designs. But with anything people complain because they dont like change.

But idk why you're acting like One Piece episodes are made within a week. Ik you never explictly said that, but you put such a heavy emphasis on the fact that "they need to make an episode every week" that you ignore how long an episode in actuality takes. This isn’t South Park animation, this is Toei animation. And lookimg at how long it took for one episode of Dragon Ball to be made considering it's a weekly anime, One Piece most likely took the same amount of time as well per episode (before Wano), that being 2 months

You can't, because there's so many. SECOND - now watch 1 episode from Return to Sabaody. Notice how similar it is in production to Marineford compared to East Blue.

"No no no the the series isn't shit AFTER the timeskip, it was shit before then too!" Nice argument. Drizzt covered every base there is, and he's right. The series has major flaws and they've been getting worse and worse, especially from the last couple arcs. Once you're off the copium you'll see it too.

Those that complained about Nami and Robin (2 of the weakest members fighting wise that don't aspire to be strong like Luffy wanting to be able to protect the people he loves, Zoro wanting to be the greatest swordsman and Sanji wanting to be able to protect the crew if the other 2 aren't around). Sanji Post timeskip until Wano only got 1 fight that he actually won in Fishman Island. In Punk Hazard he clashed with Vergo, but Law ultimately took over the fight. In Dressrosa he clashed with Doflamingo, but again didn't fight him. Even in WCI his own arc he didn't get a fight, but instead baked a cake to calm down Big Mom. One Piece isn't about fighting, but for the crew to show why their the best for their position on the crew and how they aspire to reach their dream. Luffy constantly proves his crew is the greatest and didn't get a helmsman until recently because he only recently found the absolute best for the position by luck, instinct and being able to read people. Zoro always fights opponents that gets him closer to his goal. Sanji always improves his craft as a cook and sails with the crew hoping to find the All Blue. Nami we know draws a map of every island she visits so that one day she can create a map that shows the entire One Piece world. Usopp gets stronger, braver and more competent each arc (He takes oppurtunities to fight people now only on the run to gain distance since he's a sniper and short distance isn't his way of fighting). Chopper gains more medical knowledge and can cure more diseases than most doctors even curing a virus that was just created by Queen. Robin always reads Poneglyphs with the one she's looking for is on Laugh Tale, but as Rayleigh said she should take her time to get to know the World and each location and unlike them not rush it (Feels like this is Odas way of saying how we feel at the end will be much more satisfactory if we take our time with it rather than rush it). Franky just wants to see his ship sail to Laugh Tale. Brook wants to see Laboon once they have sailed through the New World. All their dreams are actively following their dreams. They just don't rush their dreams because a part of the message of One Piece which is also part of the time skip is don't rush it. Train to grow stronger so you can face new challenges and don't forget to enjoy your adventure with your friends.

Most of that character growth is in your own head. There's very little growth shown in the show anymore. I can't remember the last time I saw Nami drawing a map or Sanji asking about the Big Blue. Show don't tell.

Water 7 / enies lobby was almost all about her and in thriller bark she fought oars with everyone. Sanji did not even really have a fight that arc except for absalom but it was real short and doesnt really count

Not a one piece manga reader I'm an anime only. I just watch videos on the new chapters because I feel like oda is horrible at drawing fights Really it's hard to follow anything that man draws. I mention all that to say. Yeah the one piece anime is rough at points. Especially after the timeskip. God it's horrible after the timeskip. Each week we get like 4 pages adapted lmao. I enjoyed the anime up to the timeskip. Doesnt help we had a whole arc that was horribly paced happen right after It. I got Fishman PTSD. I dont have any facts to prove the timeskip changed a lot. But I can tell you the feeling of each arc changed drastically. Also any fucking soul on this planet that uses some twilight princess music in their video gets a wet kiss on da cheek

One thing that I like to defend about Sanji groping Nami scene, he didn't do it out of malice. He was genuinely feeling tired from running in Nami's body due to her not having as much stamina as him. He was holding his chest cause he was tired and that's what ended up causing him to "grope" her.
