+Laurynas S. Yup. Here in Denmark it was the Opel Kadett D. We held on to that name through what was also known as the Vauxhall/opel Astra mk2 (to us known as the Opel Kadett E). The first Astra we got was the mk3.

Had a MINT silver one back in the day, so smooth V's the XR's of the day. I had a lot of Mk1’s back then which would be worth a lot today, but the Astra GTE was probably my favourite, they were fairly rare back then and I’ve heard there’s hardly any left now. I did see one last year going up the Afan Valley on the back of a flatbed.

+Emanuele Croci Well, in a way, it tests how much faster (in this case) the Astra has become over the years, in comparison to the Golf and the MX-5 that came before it. But doing that in an MX-5 is pointless, as the point of that car is that it's rapid, but not fast. Thus, the overall improvement is quite small. Putting the fastest version of the old model up against the slowest version of the new one is silly as well.
+appelpower1 No it doesn't test how much faster one is, because although the times are posted, the visual difference just isn't there for a viewer comparison. It's stupid. If they really wanted to test that, they would launch them both at the same time.
yomammaspoodle Well, you could use it as a measure of whether they've improved 'enough'. Granted, 'enough' is a disputable term here, with the aforementioned MX-5 being a great example, but it does add a bit of a nice twist. I like seeing the old ones win, it makes me feel good somehow.

I had an 84 Opel Kadett GSi in white. What a car. In the long list of cars I wish I hadn't sold, that one is near the top. I have a 2015 VXR now though, and very nice it is too
I would like to state that I enjoyed this video and felt that the presenter did an excellent job.
I would like to state, i agree with the decision to not allow the presenter to drive. She is the worst journalist I have encountered.

I have a 1983 Astra GTE as a project. It needs lots of work to get it road ready.
Miss my old MK1 GTE, had an 83 in red, bought it in 96 and spent the next 12 months replacing most of the sheet metal, fitting a 2.0XE 16v from a mk2 along with the rear axle from the discs and the digital dash. Has it on the road from late 97 until 2000 when pikeys stole it for the 17" wheels I had on it and burnt it out, even 20 years ago the interior and engine were worth as much as the wheels but they probably didn't know anything about it.
The GTE was first registered on 1st August 1984 and it's still Taxed and MOT'd today.
It belongs to Vauxhall.Its in the Vauxhall heritage centre at Luton.

I ever had a mk1 gte but I was lucky enough to get inside of one and never thought they would be worth a much as they're now crazy but better looking cars for sure

Given what the MK1 weighs, 1.8i, 115bhp is quite a lot.
Note remotely fair, if you'd stuck the MK2 16v Redtop against the VXR that would have been much fairer.

The Kadett (Astra) E GSi16v would of smoked that over weight "modern" Astra.

WTF is the point in this, the gte back in the day was what it was, cool, quick and fun. its being put up against a car with almost 3x the power.better tech, brakes, suspension ect, ect.

They are not 'retro seats' they are the original seats. They would be retro if put in a new car. And it was over 3 seconds faster not nearly 3 seconds faster. FFS Auto Express where are you getting these new people from.
