    In this series of 3 videos I'm going to try to explain the DJI Flight modes, compass calibrations and why errors and flyways are not really a flyaway, GPS modes and how they all work to interact with each other, by the end of the three you should have a good understanding off how the flight modes and Compass/GPS systems work on pretty much all DJI Models including the Mavic Air
    In Part 2 we are looking at the Compass and how and why you get errors.

    A brilliant series, pitched at exactly the right level.
    Many thanks for putting this together.

    Very, very useful and informative. I'd already subbed previously, then forgot to watch the videos.... now corrected.
    I've had these errors several times. No lost birds as I gathered my wits and piloted the thing back (with my heart in my mouth)
    My Air shows the Calibrate box as default every boot up. These calibrations virtually always fail. I've gone ahead and flown the damn thing anyway and these occasions have never thrown any tantrums while in flight.
    I've had loss of GPS lock in open country with a MavPro1, and a P4. Different places. The P4 virtually never shows the Calibrate box in the menu on boot up like the Mavic does.
    But you've extended my awareness of these matters considerably for this quality information. DJI should use you as a tutorial designer!

    Brilliant job in explaining GPS and compass issues that we all could experience and not understand why, now we do. Cheers for superb mini series in this. 👍🏼

    Thank you that was very helpful. To bad I can't manually put my Mavic Pro in atti mode so I can manage flying in risky areas such as around compass or GPS disturbances..

    Fantastic little series, I thought I'd learned a lot about the gps and compass already because I'm paranoid about flyaways, but this .... wow. Thank you !

    That moment when a series of a videos end :(
    Learned a lot from this and this information should be known to every drone pilot to minimize the drone crashes around the world

    Excellent ! Thank you. I was beginning to think my Mavic Mini was faulty as it never gets a GPS lock and has only ever had about 6 satellites listed. I’ve used it in Norwich City and I guess it’s the trees and buildings that are causing this.

    good video.. do you have one practical video showing the radar view map explaining how to be sure your mavic is facing north and the red triangle is facing the correct direction on the map view in bottom left of dji go4 app

    Very Informative. Thank you. This explains why my Mavic Air loses control when I'm flying in the gorges of the Himalayas. I'm still baffled why my Mavic Air sometimes doesn't fly up and other times it does around the same elevation (5400m). Wonder how it calculates the flight altitude.

    Just found this series in the dji forum. The quality and clarity of your presentation was very impressive. Thank you.
    I have one question however. Can I conclude that, should the aircraft be out of sight and enter atti mode due to compass error, it can be flown home on gps using the map display? Also, if the aircraft is out of sight and enters atti mode due to gps error, can it be flown home using the compass ring display?
    I haven't had either of these errors yet, but would like to be prepared for when it eventually happens.

    • @MadRC
      @MadRC  5 лет назад +1

      Basically no and yes, once you loose GPS/compass the map and radar become inaccurate however it’s slightly more complex than this.
      GPS generally does not just fail and in almost all cases the issue with caused by compass errors than GPS. So while the craft may enter Atti mode the chances are the position data would be correct and you could fly it home via the map but also note because the compass is not behaving the Arrow and radar may be off substantially.
      If you lost GPS then neither the map or the radar would be of use tbh.
      Any chance you link the DJI page it’s been posted on :)

      Thanks for your prompt reply. It's generally what I expected and one of the reasons I feel uncomfortable when I can't see the aircraft. The link you requested is:

    all good stuff. my Mavic pro displayed MAG so I packed it away and moved to another location a couple of miles away .I think it was a 2m high chain link fence and nearby overhead high power electricity pylons / cables .

    Fixed the error for the mavic mini when it says “check gps settings or calibrate mobile phone compass”. I thought it was about satellite range and spread, blah blah. It was a location service iPhone security issue. Go to Settings>>Privacy>>Location Services>>DJI Fly App>>Always.
    For some reason when you set it up the DJI fly app and asks if it can get permissions to use your photo, location services... it changed its security setting for location services to ask. No wonder I kept getting the gps error even at multiple locations. I hope this helps you guys. Took me a day to figure out 😊

    The new Autel Evo seems to have 900 Mhz frequency -- will this have a better signal stability, like Occusync?

    • @MadRC
      @MadRC  6 лет назад +1

      This is unknown at this time, lower frequency will definitely help but you then get less bandwidth too, i'm not sure what they are doing on this tbh.

    Brilliant series! Thank you. Do you have any recommendation on keeping control of the AC when in Atti mode. It happened to me a couple of times and I just increased the height.

    • @MadRC
      @MadRC  6 лет назад

      It just takes practice, I have flown a lot in Atti and you just need to get used to it. I highly recommend getting a F450 with a Naza and just practicing.

    I do not think the separation of satellite will have an issue in an open area or wide area. Even it does has satellite that is closes together above you, in a wide open area, it's impossible that there's no other satellite sitting a far to make your gps lock strong

    Hello watched your videos with great interest I have a problem when in certain modes like in waypoint on my mavic platinum it says poor gps and it won't let me do it even though it says I have 12 or more satalites. I have tried redoing the IMU and compass collaboration with not much success. What's going on very frustrating when I want to do the special modes on the drone. Please help regards Irvine Portsmouth UK

  • @bobuk5722
    @bobuk5722 6 лет назад +1

    Hi folks. There's another problem with GPS. There are two layers, a commercial one and an encoded miltary one. Our muti-rotors listen to the commercial broacasts. These sometimes have a deliberately induced 'jitter' added for reasons of nationsl security. The location informatin becomes either indistict or inaccurate. Do not take the GPS as perfect, sometimes it is not. BobUK.

    • @rnrnrn69
      @rnrnrn69 6 лет назад

      As Martin pointed out - SA (selective availability) was turned off to increase the accuracy of the position. However we do have access only to one frequency as opposed to the military and therefore their position will be more accurate. This does not mean however that the accuracy cannot be compromised due to some military or political reason and therefore this stands - you cannot be certain of GPS at any time.
