Kaito Files: Fixing Gaming's Biggest Problems (Valentine's Day Special?)

  • Let us discuss one of the best DLCs to be released since The Old Hunters in Bloodborne (at least from my very subjective perspective): The Kaito Files! How does it improve on the formula of the other Like a Dragon games and how does it compare to the industry standards of today? The brunt of this discussion will be on the pairing of Kaito and Mikiko, but I felt that the former topics would serve as a proper introduction into the videos to come on this particular DLC. That IS my intention, at the very least, but we'll see what the future holds for this channel either way.
    Happy Valentine's everyone!
    Cheers!

    Kaito is the one of the few RGG protags to get a happy ending. He basically got the ending Kiryu almost got at the ending of Yakuza 1.

I brought down the minister of health twice, like two different people. I also got stabbed twice on my last job, but that guys in jail. His boss isn't but they'll get him I'm sure of it- Mikiko? The reason the Shirakaba final fight is so enjoyable is _because_ its so stupid, for once we got a _final_ final fight that didn't have any life-or-death stakes attached to it.

    Personally, I loved the fact that Kaito isn't fighting some new villain that does things for his own selfish gain, his final boss is simply someone who is also trying to get with his old flame, and it's refreshing.

    A beautiful analysis indeed! The fact that this DLC nailed Kaito and Mikiko's relationship so well makes me wish the series would ditch the whole dating hostesses/girlfriends thing and instead focus more on giving the protagonists meaningful relationships that can really enhance their character, honestly.

    we need more Kaito!
    Jokes aside, after Kaito's files, I hope the next Judgment game will actually make more time for Yagami and Mafuyu. I feel like they have quite a big past between them both as potential lovers or just regular characters basically. RGG's characters stories are so captivating

    • @SaddenedSoul
      @SaddenedSoul 17 дней назад

      Mafuyu was criminally underused in Lost Judgment! I'd also appreciate a return to more of the home cast instead of the new characters--there was necessarily a lot of time invested in Kuwana, Sawa, etc. Will be interesting to see the group dynamic now that Mikiko and Jun will be in the fold.

    God, this DLC was so good, and it set up so much potential for fun. Like, imagine the next Judgment having Mikiko being part of the Detective Agency and making it successful. Imagine a story where Kaito and his *wife* work together and fight together Kiryu and Kaoru-style. Imagine an RGG Studios-game with its first playable female fighter (in beat'em up-combat, at least). The way this DLC ends just leaves an opening for so much fun in the future, and I hope we get to see what actually will be happening in next year's RGG Summit.

    Wonderful video!!
    The Kaito Files is one of my favorite RGG entries even if it’s a short DLC story. (Maybe even 2nd behind Y:LaD) It nails everything it sets out to do and impacted me in lots of ways, including of course the reasons stated in this video.
    It’s so perfect. I do hope you’ll do more analyses on it because it deserves to be appreciated way more!!
    (Shirakaba is honestly one of my favorite characters in the franchise 😂 he’s selfish and deceitful but he comes around in the end which is really nice.)
    Random note but you’re one of the only people who has ever said that the females in this franchise are good so thank you, I am so tired of hearing the tired rhetoric that they’re bad characters when they’re not. Even Yumi back in Y1 was awesome imo.

    I just recently completed the dlc, i may have some recency bias, but i think this is my favorite “game” in the entire series. I didn’t like lost judgment much as the tone from the first game was kinda lost, but this dlc brought it back, and possibly went even farther. This was your noire detective movie, with love involved and both parties had AMAZING character arcs. Also the villain was just better than lost judgment’s.

    This ending actually gives hope for Kaoru and Kiryu in Like a Dragon 8. If Kaito and Mikiko could get a happy ending after 14 years of separation, then Kiryu and Kaoru can too.

      @@noba04 how so? The door is left open. Kaoru is still single and is waiting for Kiryu, she obviously doesn't buy him dying "Maybe a part of me is still waiting for him". Then, if you read Kiryu's Life Link notes, it becomes clear he is still in love with Kaoru too. "Knowing that she still thinks of me made me feel... elated. I wish I could tell her how I really feel.". So there's still hope for further development in LAD9.

    The Kaito Files had a much more coherent story than the base game and the fights felt worth fighting and I can't believe it ended like that. So happy. I loved the base game but the story was such a mess in so many ways, unlike the first game (which was a great game with a much better story but nowhere near as good a game as the sequel).

    As an amateur writer, I am very confused by what you meant in 11:43. In what way is the story of the Kaito files character driven, within the context of love story? And how does it contrast with a story driven romance, including what you mean by story driven romance? I'd greatly appreciate an elaboration as I seek to better understand all the games within the yakiza series (as well as countless other media) in order to improve my own writing.

    • @mjc0961
      @mjc0961 Год назад +2

      Hana was an odd choice to put on screen while saying that, she was definitely done dirty. Was only a voice in Yakuza 5, and her character profile was a picture of her desk instead of her. And then she hasn't been seen since. She got more screen time in Dead Souls than in 5, for crying out loud.
      Also I wonder how Kaoru Sayama is doing in the United States... Definitely done dirty as well.

    • @gokudoni
      @gokudoni  Год назад +13

      The characters being done dirty is a different discussion. The premise here was whether or not they were fleshed out to the point of feeling like genuine characters with their own goals and motivation, rather than just being "cardboard cutouts", as it were. They even felt more believable than some final bosses in this series, at least from my perspective. Having said that, they do deserve more screentime, but that's not a problem exclusive to the cast I brought up (nor is it exclusive to non-lead characters altogether).
