Great video similiar to the regrets people have when they are about to die. I am 66 and I always had a lot of goals, like a second advanced degree, black belt in karate, pilots licence, speaking several languages and of course a leaner body fat % and so on, but I now realize, especially when you talk to past pilots, martial artists and others that it is the journey that people fondly look back on, not the day you get the external validation. To be quite pragmatic, we are all destined to be done and forgotten 15 years after we pass so being in the present moment and being in a continual state of gratitude will make every day the best day, whatever you happen to be doing. I have learned that no one but you cares about your past accomplishments or future goals. Just know that when you turn 85 or 90 you would give everything you own and have to be 60 once again.

I am an early retired multimillionaire, I spend very little money on day to day living and buy only necessities. However when I buy, I buy value. If the solar panels and house battery will reduce future bills and allow my garage to be my gas station, I buy. If the backyard fence costs 50% more but will practically last forever, I buy. When I travel overseas I upgrade the flights and accommodations because I want to be comfortable and enjoy. Do almost all my clothes and household shopping at Costco.

Similar to some of your goals, when I was working, I always wanted to be appreciated. But I didn’t feel appreciated. One of the reasons I decided to retire early was this not feeling appreciated. I had thought that once I have left, then they would appreciate what they have lost. But then, as soon as I retired I realised that none of it mattered. It never really did. Maybe that’s why they didn’t appreciate me. I was but a cog in the machine. Take me out and the machine simply reassembled the cogs and keeps on rolling. I am still a cog but now in my own machine. Great and thoughtful video Joe. Thanks.

It is a difficult balancing act this Job we do for 40 odd years….it’s important that you don’t have a job you hate, ideally a job where you feel you can grow as a person and perhaps even enjoy but never, ever, ever forget that you’re immediately replaceable and nobody is going to bat an eyelid when you’re gone. Never forget that whoever hired you they hired you for your labour to profit from it. (and there’s nothing wrong with that (if the circumstances are fair))

I think your success on your channel is because you are a lot like the rest of us humble, older gentlemen that are satisfied with past accomplishments and are grateful for your life's situation. We don't even try to keep ahead of everyone. And we're happy every day. I'm a 59 y/o recently retired aerospace engineer. Sometimes accomplishments working for corporate America were very satisfying; mostly few and far between. We have a small ranch, 2 acres, 22 year old Toyota Tacoma for me and a 2012 Altima for my wife. No flash, as you can see and all paid; no debt. A couple other toys but all paid for too. For me, a few close sibling deaths in my life has opened my eyes to retire early, work for me and my wife (house, cars etc), and side jobs for cash. Not really needed but nice to fill your pockets with some cash and get physical exercise. I just like it that way and I too am satisfied with the way things are in life. Thanks for your channel!

61 yo Canadian here, been semi-retired for 10 years but fully retired for 2 years. Done several trips overseas in the past 40 years. Don’t feel like travelling anymore, long lines, cramped planes, security, etc. So much to visit in Canada and the US. Don’t care much about what others think about me, living a simple but enjoyable life. I agree that the coast of Maine is beautiful, only a 300 mile drive from Montreal. The mansions in RI are worth visiting. If you want a real taste of Europe in North America, visit Quebec City and Montreal. You’ll be amazed. Learn a few French words beforehand. My best day in retirement is to go on a 30 mile bike ride on beautiful tree covered trails. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Nailed it Joe! Every point on your list resonates with me. Case in point -- I'm driving a 2006 Honda truck (still going strong!) and my wardrobe is super basic/minimal/plain. LOL! I need to give some thought to what I might add to the list for me personally. Also wanted to say... I LOVE your content and your casual format. RUclips is quickly turning into a cesspool of frustrating clickbait, lies, and trickery. So a channel like yours is a breath of fresh air for people like me who are simply looking for honest and helpful content. PLEASE don't change anything -- your subscriber count will keep going up! And BTW, regarding #4.... I LOVE YA' MAN! 🥰😊

    Hey Joe!
I too only put about 2k miles per year on my used 2015 vehicle.
Also, just returned from 3 week trip to Turkey. Similar to Greece. Started in Istanbul, and did combo of flying, driving and boats to explore the Turkish coast of Aegean and Mediterranean seas. Amazing trip, but 3 weeks felt too long to be away from home.
My future has always been focused on RV travel. And I hope to return to this in near future. My non US fiance' is onboard. So we will transition from overseass travel to exploring state and national parks in a "house on wheels" 😄

Educated professional.....list maker....task master....perfectionist.....getting stuff done ON THE DAILY. That segment def resonated with me and appreciate that you shared that it's still something you struggle with because I seem to be filling my newfound 'free time' with getting 'more stuff done' yet the list doesn't seem to get any shorter? Living in the moment is a learned skill just like the things we did in our careers. Currently recreationally employed a few days a month :)

I've lately been thinking world travel is a waste of time. I like to find places closer to home that I can repeat year after year (with annual continuous improvements) that I find as much enjoyment in as one-off bucket lister foreign trips. I hate bucket lists as they feel like bragging rights to post on Facebook. Facebook and the algorithms it uses separates people as much as it joins people. I've been bucking that trend by avoiding Facebook and instead spending quality time with friends and family. Being present.

I am feeling a shift in my goals too. I feel my goals of yesterday were really helpful. They gave me a the shining star to strive for and head toward. As I near retirement it feels ok to correct course a bit and refine my goals. I am still curious and want to learn and improve, but maybe the drive can be dialed back a bit. I think losing my Dad last year and seeing my Mom declining, my focus is clear to spend time where I want. That is with those I love and care for. Great video Joe.

Hi Joe! Thanks a lot for this video and your channel! I think it's great to get your perspective! You (and a few others) have inspired me to rethink my retirement plan (and produce one in the first place). I think your content is great, don't pay too much attention to the few (I hope) haters, I am actually very surprised anyone can get upset about what you are saying (proving my own ignorance). I will not retire for a few more years (I'm 58 now) but when I do, I would be very happy to show you around Stockholm and Sweden, which I noticed was not on your short list. I am 61 and share your views. It was (then) nice getting the best "boys toys" - Cars, motorbikes, new tech, sports kit. Now my cars are on average 30 years old. My can am Spyder Trike is 12 years old. The G-Wagon is 40 years old. No need for the big house, a spotless big apartment suffices, I covered all the countries to visit before 45. That fast track career - is now 30 years old... and not worth bragging about. It does not matter! All that really matters is my wife, children and parents. We are blessed with health and enough wealth, Healthspan wil be to 83 years old - and expect another 10 years of more fragile living after that. (Medical tech has advanced).. Each day is precious, but it is how you live that day, not how many achievements are done that day. You said it well.

Another Awesome video Joe! Thanks so much. I grew up studying Milton Freedman - if you are enjoying the book "Free to Choose," you will love the TV series (if you can still find it). I watched it on PBS when it aired - way before the days when there was such a thing as Netflix or binge watching, I watched one episode every week. You will really enjoy that if you can find it. One of his great analogies to free market economics was a card game where at the end of the night all of the winnings were evenly distributed among all the players. His point: The losers were thrilled to have their losses erased and enjoy some of the winnings; the winners were completely annoyed at having to give up all their winnings they played so hard for all night. The result: noone ever bothered coming back to play that card game again. Because noone's going to waste his/her time playing a game you can't win.

Hey Joe I’ll be 48 in January. I retired from the Air Force a little over 9 years ago. Watching your videos has inspired me to be semi-retired by age 55. I manage a water/wastewater utility in Alaska and this has been the pinnacle position career wise which I aspired to reach. Now I’m here it has taken some adjusting to get use to (was promoted into the position in January) I now miss being the plant foreman working with my operators on various tasks. The pay is tremendous which I feel fortunate to have but I don’t see myself staying in the position until I stop working for good. I am now learning how to program PLCs and intend on getting into industrial automation as a third “career”. I too feel like there is always something that must be accomplished. I find it quite mentally exhausting to not be doing something. BTW, I noticed in one of your videos you shared when you were here in Alaska you visited the Alaska Pipeline outside of Fairbanks. I live about ten miles away from that spot. How cool is that. 👍 That said, I have found your videos and the MoneyGuy videos extremely informative and relevant to me and have learned quite a bit from them. So thank you for all you’re willing to share and educate the rest of us. We are listening. 😊🇺🇸🎅🏻🎄❄️

    1. Not caring about things has kept me single. If you don't get married by 30, women assume if you look poor that you are. I stopped driving my 1995 Saturn this year because it got stolen.
    2. By 30 I had, since I was single, more than I needed for anything I wanted without having to be the highest paid or ranked.
    4. I stopped reading comments on my social media. It's my thoughts; if they don't like what I think it's ok.
    5. I have learned from travel that most places are the same at their core. People share general goals. The differences are interesting, but if you never leave America, you can still live a good life. Never been to North Dakota.

That's a good list Joe. I was wondering if you would state something about traveling and you did. I think you said that you would like to travel about 5 times per year (??). I have a goal of having a vacation somewhere, inside or outside of the country at least twice per year. I want to make sure that my girlfriend and I have enough to take those trips. I'm not sure it's worth retiring earlier to give up vacations. My thoughts for retiring closer to 62 rather than at age 63 to 64. Appreciate your videos. Btw, I have Hoka shoes for waking around shoes, and Saucony shoes for walk/running shoes.

I don’t have any of these goals, not when I was 15, 25, 35, 45, or 55. I just wanted freedom to do what I liked to do (which differed every couple of years). I do have a little bit of guilt putting things off daily. Time flies so fast during waking hours. I often did nothing before I fell asleep.

Kent county Delaware is a well kept secret! Amish country, Bombay Bird sanctuary, helmet crabs, quartz beaches, Harriet Tubman freedom trail. Dover AFB has a great, outdoor airplane museum. It is really stuck in 1960. We moved there to support our kids living in the DC area. It was a very laid back seven years.
We were lucky. My spouse’s or my positions provided opportunity to see most all of the places you listed😅I still have not been to Vermont! lol

Since INFPs have aspirational extraverted thinking, Te, we aspire to mentor and guide others, albeit one on one, which you stated as being one of the reasons that you made the video. Make sure to have a meal at Kroll's Diner to sample some local food. Knoephla soup and their Fleischkuechles were some of my favorites. On the west side of N.D. Theodore Roosevelt national Park has some beautiful scenery. Painted canyon off of rte 94 is amazing. Not much between Fargo and Theodore Roosevelt national Park.

We are still in our first and only house, 45 years later. I stayed with a job I enjoyed when I could have made twice as much had I chased the money. Just discovered Hokas! My wife had to convince me to spend the money on them but having worn them for a few weeks now, it was money very well spent! Quality and comfort are worth the price. It takes time after you retire to realize that if you accomplish just one or two things that you set out to do each day, you've had a productive day. The Swedes have a word, lagom, which roughly translates to "just enough". I realized that it's okay to do just enough to keep me occupied and engaged, without feeling pressured to achieve a bunch of self-imposed goals.

Having secured oneself is such a powerful position to be in. Congrats and cheers!
