Thank you for that. I never really listened to what other people my age listen to. I'm into Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Phyllis Hyman etc. and people think I'm just weird. I LOVE music that is from before my time and peoples opinion of what I should listen to can't/wont change that. I've never been "cool" but If that means being someone I'm not then I don't want to be. I just want to be me.. Alicia
There are many versions of this song on RUclips and this ranks right up with the best of them. I was lucky enough to see Odetta perform before she passed. What a talent.
"If only one could be sure that every 50 years a voice and a soul like Odetta's would come along, the centuries would pass so quickly and painlessly we would hardly recognize time" - Maya Angelou --True that.
I am not a sensitive kind of person, i would say that i am a bit tough. But, I feel like crying, this great singer has a way of touching the soul of the listener.
If you want to find meaning in life, if you want proof of the soul, look no further than music, this and Odetta herself are shining examples. There are no words.
If they're here, then they can't really use that excuse. I've been following this song for years, and I only recently found this version. I had to dig really deep to end up here. And honestly, isn't a desire to learn one of the best qualities in a person?
I believe this rendition of the song, along with others by Odetta, is one of the songs that inspired Bob Dylan to transition from rock music to folk music during his beginnings.
No, but there aren't many. It's tough being young; I didn't even figure out that I didn't have to listen to what's "Cool" until I was like 19 or so. But I did, and I've learned that I can listen to just about anything and enjoy it along the way. I also learned that while you're young, it seems like being different makes people dislike you, but once you hit about 20 or so that changes, and it just makes you a more interesting person. Only people that never grew up don't agree with that.
I am a young person. If young people are soulless fools, then I'm just as guilty. The idea of real vs. fake music is fallacious, though. The secret is this - love music. No one is a soulless fool. And it's not what people are listening to that concerns me - it's what they aren't listening to. People miss out on a lot of things they'd love, starved behind this wall of presumption about real music and fake music and assumptions about what's real and what's fake.
It's all real music. I listen to almost everything, from Led Zeppelin to Lead Belly, and a lot more into the modern days. But yes, the other guy speaks the truth. High school sucks. That's just kind of the way it is. It's its own society, more ruthless than almost any I've ever seen. College is a lot better. The people there aren't packed as tight, and it's not as structured. You're rarely forced to spend time with people you don't want to spend time with.
maybe they lack of curiosity on the musical side, what do you know about turkish food or chemistry?... its all relative, we all have different interests
again, the assumption young people are soulless fools. Live and let live, you should know better, and stop being so concerned about what other people are listening to... We all have our own path across life and most people listen to alot of musical genres. For instance, I can enjoy this as much as Snoop Dogg of Judas Priest (example) depending on the circumstances..
It's strange. Normally she cuts right through to the essence of a song. Here it's as if she's just listlessly singing the notes with no attention to the lyrics.

Are you cool yet, or are you still listening to good music...? :)
You are an old soul a million lives you have lived.

Very moving version...what a voice...just wow!
I was extremely lucky I got to meet her before she passed thanks for the upload

Brilliant...
she touches the depth of the soul and breaks it.
I normally listen to more modern music, like Korn, Tool, Skrillez, Dubsteb Syle... This Odetta is amazing. I'm hooked now.
I'm 2014 soon and still liking this music
È un invito alla preghiera specialmente in questo giorno🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️

Fabulous - almost on a par with Nina Simone, who in my opinion does THE version of this song
Mouldy Peaches - Be yourself, you'll turn out cool, supercool!
Sheep only follow sheep.

2020🔥🔥
Odetta delivers this song like none other - for it comes from her Gut and eats into my soul ...

That's because it's an anonymous song. People just record it sometimes at concerts and whatever.
This is way different from the version that I know. Way slower too. I think the one I have is Woody Guthrie, but I can't remember for sure.
maybe they lack of curiosity on the musical side, what do you know about turkish food or chemistry?... its all relative, we all have different interests
lol, Snoop Dogg of Judas Priest.. i meant to say "OR Judas Priest". You get the point anyway
Wow, I'm only six weeks old and I love this music... assholes!
No more auction blocks

"Jazz is stupid! I mean, just play the right notes!" - Angela (The Office)
quieren que ponga una abuela negra re pro
i like her voice but this song is for shouting , in my opinion.. too quiet
Do you know the feeling of having to take a crap and fart during a job interview too?
Как то слабовато наверно круче бто джорди и дэйв эванс никто эту вещь не исполнил
I normally love Odetta's voice, but this song is not a good fit.
Minority report here - I don't like it. Too (I mean TOO) slow and kinda boring version.
you need to listen to it after midnight, in a pub, in the winter, with a class of whiskey in your hand. then you will appreciate it more.

we're all different,it's ok :)
