Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational, or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use.
Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes; the nature of the copyrighted work; the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
    No copyright infringement is intended.

If they had only known what a success that show would be, they wouldn't have closed the channel.

That was around the time I discovered SpongeBob (or maybe it was the following year). I didn't know it was around in 1999 until I watched a compilation of old Nickelodeon ads on RUclips one time. That's most likely because my mom wouldn't allow us to watch shows with a lot of rude humor because they're not uplifting (one time when I was around 6, I was browsing through TV shows and SpongeBob was on, my mom turned off the TV and said it's yucky). I think I discovered SpongeBob through merchandise that I saw in public.

Apparently, the day after the channel's closure, the Nickelodeon Germany farewell promo (which can be seen towards the end of the video) was played on repeat during the channel's regular 6am-8pm broadcast hours. This apparently went on for 3 months.
It shocks me how this didn't wear out both the tape and the tape player. It was also a missed opportunity for VH1 Germany to extend their broadcast hours, as they were timesharing with Nickelodeon Germany from 8pm-midnight by the time the latter was taken off air.

You're right, it went on until late(?) August according to some viewers and other evidence. I only assume even more laziness on Viacom's end, then on the other side Viacom also wanted to sweep Nickelodeon Germany's mere existence under the rug forever so it's strange they left it on so long.
If it interests anyone why I said "sweep under the rug", Viacom decided to shut down the channel in January 1998 (it never turned a profit and drained 150 million Deutsche Mark), ship the execs to the US and give them some fat severance paychecks and sent them on their way, only telling employees and viewers on **29** May (and a whole dramatic episode of security physically barring the employees from leaving the room they were made to get into for about an hour), lying to the employees saying the decision wasn't premade, shoving a farewell video made in England (specifically 6:05, dated 4 February), and when the whole thing was done, Viacom washed their hands of the whole thing like it never existed, except for looping the promo until August, which then again could've just been letting whatever remained of the channel rot with no cleanup.

@@sienekebd They could have informed employees and viewers of the closure well in advance. Not only that, but they shouldn't have played the farewell promo on a constant loop daily for 3 months after the channel had closed, as the farewell promo had apparently been played in between every single programme during the channel's final three days on air; it's sad how Viacom in Germany believed it was perfectly acceptable to allow the channel to rot like that.
The fact that they lied to their employees, laid them off at such short notice and neglected the now-defunct channel for three months by looping the channel's farewell promo for 14 hours a day shows just how little they actually gave a shit.
They should have just ceased airing the channel entirely and let VH1 Germany extend their broadcast hours, as they were timesharing with Nickelodeon Germany from 8pm-midnight daily by the time the latter was shut down.
As for the farewell montage being produced in England, apparently it was Nickelodeon UK themselves that had produced it. My guess is that Nick UK put the clips together and added the background music and then Nick Germany added the voiceover.
As for Viacom lying to their employees claiming the decision wasn't pre-made, the decision to permanently close the channel had been made in January 1998 at the earliest; they could have chosen to announce the channel's closure then, months in advance, but they didn't. Physically barring doors during meetings and sending employees to the US at such short notice are also massive failings on Nickelodeon Germany's part.

Nick Germany's final message Auto-Caption Translated:
There's no need to worry, because before we say goodbye, we want to thank you for 3 great years with you and Nickelodeon. We all had a great time, not least because of the NickToons! No matter it was the Rugrats, AHH! Real Monsters, or Rocko's Modern Life. We hope that everyone finds a new home! OK then, there was also the fabulous NickLive program, where you could join in, call, and facts. And everything! Today, I received countless letters from you. Thank you very much for your great Nickelodeon logos! Here and there showed where you live, what you do, and all your fabulous hobbies. Then there was also The Big Help. With you, We were finally able to do

Something new. No matter when there was something to organize, you were there. Thank you very much for that, It's with us at Nickelodeon. Your vote counted in the Nick Awards 96, and 97, where you could choose your favorite stars. That's it, that was 3 years of Nickelodeon, and there were a lot. A lot of action, a lot of fun, and I think there was something for you.
The whole Nickelodeon team says thank you, goodbye, and always remember to do what you want.

It feels pretty surreal to imagine. Nickelodeon was without a doubt at it's heyday in the 90s and seeing it catastrophically fall on its face in Germany must've been very indeed bitter and humbling for execs.

@@kejavu6403 At least they gave the brand a second chance in Germany in 2005, and the second iteration of the channel proved significantly more successful.
I'm not sure if Der Kinderkanal shared some of the same programming as Nickelodeon, but the channel was at its heyday in the 1990s, so if Der Kinderkanal did indeed broadcast a completely different lineup of programmes and aired none of Nickelodeon's programmes, then it's baffling how ARD and ZDF's Der Kinderkanal managed to kill Nickelodeon off, especially as the latter's programms were unique.
The channel was at its heyday in the 1990s, and international offshoots of the channel for the UK & Ireland and Scandinavia were performing well, so those behind the scenes must have been saddened and shocked by the channel's failure.

I barely know any german, but to summarize it based upon what I heard , the first segment " Der Letzte Nick Club" is basically the cast of the Nick Club sharing their favorite memories on air, and they sing a song along the lines of " We say goodbye here on Nickelodeon" and "we will have fun again", ending with " We fade to black on Nickelodeon"
After that, following the words splashed on screen, the announcer, Ralf Kuhler, says "But no need to worry! Because before we say goodbye, we want to thank you for three great years together on Nickelodeon. We all had a great time thanks to the Nicktoons! Whether it be the Rugrats or Arnold or Monsters or Rocko's Modern Life, we hope that all of them find new homes. Ok then there was also the fabulous Nick Live program which you could join in by calling in and giving facts. And countless letters were received from you every day, many thanks for your great Nickelodeon Logos! For you have shown here where you lived, what you did, what you made, and your fantastic hobbies. And there was also help where you could finally make a difference no matter where and what activity there was, many thanks to Nickelodeon. Your vote paid off in the 96 and 97 Kids Choice Awards, where you could see your favorite stars be chosen. Now, that was 3 years of Nickelodeon and it was a lot of fun, a lot of action, and I think it was always you doing the whole thing, with that, the Nickelodeon team says thank you , and goodbye, and remember to always do what you want!"
In the clip after, it's the same footage, albeit with a different announcer, with a message not as long, but basically what the previous announcer had said.
