I thouht the same, but after I have checked on google maps, it looks like it has unfortunately become a terrible tourist trap with no "travel back in time"...
I have long desired to experience the Gobi and the Taklamakan in person... maybe my next lifetime! I appreciate the conversions of meters/feet and kilometers/miles. Someday USA will convert, but not in my present lifetime...
I imagine there was an extremely high risk of meeting bandits in middle of the desert. Everybody knew the merchants were carrying something worth more than gold in weight. 18:45 Just what I thought.
There is the gross mistake about the depiction of the paintings in the cave at the Video length at 28:30 to 30:00. Those painting of the main land are from India. It is Lord Krishna playing the flute and female dancers are dancing. You can see the peacock feather which is very symbolic of Lord Krishna. You can see this kind of painting in all of the north India up to the Kashmir and Laddakh. Even the clothing and ornament are styled in Indian.
It could be the picture of Krishna and female dancers with the flute as you describe but not to disrespect you sir, there are many deities in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddha Dharma looks like Krishna and other Hindu deities. Vajrayogini for an example she looks like "Kali" without the tongue sticking out and great master and yogi Guru Rinpoche looks like "Shiva".There are many similarities in deities in both religion especially in tantrik Buddha Dharma.Ladakh lies in Arunachal pradesh and also has huge influence on Tibetan (Vajrayana)Buddha Dharma. There are many caves like these.Even in Nepal place like upper Mustang have many caves with all kinds of Buddhist drawings on the walls. There have been so many caves like these discovered through out the Tibetan plateau. These people traveled in the distance searching for better places to settle down.
So we are on a same line. Buddhism is 2nd child of Hinduism, First was Jainism, hope you know. This not my opinion it's a historical face. I don't deny that those paintings are Buddhist or Tibetan, I said its influence is certainly Hindu. Hindu itself was not a name name at that time it has been given by its Shan, Hun, Mongol, Turks and Afghan invaders. Why ? They started calling region on the other side of Sindhu river, "Sindhu". And the name deconstructed in to Hindu. In our history accounts we find the name Bharat for India/Hindustan. India name is again given by Greeks, Indigo trade -Indica -India. So you see India was influential factor from Greece to China at that time. In that regard this place is near to Indian culture. Can't it get Indian influence ? Understand my question... Why the maker or narrater of the documentary is not acknowledging the fact part of Indian influence ?
I would not make a claim of Buddha Dharma is second child of Hinduism.Remember Siddhartha was Hindu by birth but not by his choice.Of course Siddhartha was taught by the Brahmins at the palace in various subject but he always questioned about Brahminism. He saw many flaws such as Caste discrimination,Brahmins holding higher stake Hindu society, bad politics towards poor, old Hindu ritual animal sacrifice.Siddhartha highly opposed these practices. After he left the palace the first thing he did was take a refuge to the Ashram,He spent time there with other Brahmins and with Higher Rishimuni but the lesson he received at the Ashram did not answer everything about what he had on his mind.He decided to leave the Ashram,he thought if he stays there for longer period of time with the rest of the Brahmins then he will never find the cure.He went on his own,He discovered one of the ultimate truth in his journey about the system of human body which is middle way (Madhem Marg). It was one of the core teachings in Buddha Dharma. He reached the stage of Nirvana through his knowledge and the unlimited mindfulness meditation. No disrespect towards Hinduism but Buddha as a reincarnation of Hindu god is fabricated topic and cleverness by the Brahmins. After the uprising by the Brahmins like Pushyamitra and Sankaracharya in Maghdada during the sungha dynasty towards Buddha Dharma in 800 BCE ,many Buddhists monks were killed and thousands of shrines and temples destroyed and surely after that Buddha Dharma was wiped out from the Indian sub continent,Brahmins came up with the ideology of Buddha as Hindu reincarnation of god Vishnu to convert left over lay Buddhists into Hinduism at that time in Indian sub continent.Out of 84,000 of Buddhists sutras not one single sutra mentions Buddha as a Hindu god Vishnu.Hindus have to let go of this blind faith and ideology told by the Brahmins. It is irrelevant.I can't speak for other faith such as Jainism or Sikhism. This is where we stands on the debate of Hinduism and Buddhism.
I have read about Buddha as reincarnation of a Hindu God but that's all. There is no such notation in public domain. Brahmanism, I am the victim of it. I can certainly claim that I know better then you. You have certain facts in your favour. But what you want to do with it? Where are you leading this debate? My question was about the mention of Hindu influence on that cave paintings.
Perhaps you know better than me.I would not doubt your knowledge but many Hindus have to let go off Buddha Dharma as a second child of Hinduism mentality. With all the respect to Hinduism,I was just responding to your comment.Forgive me if you found my comment offensive.May you find peace.Sadhu Sadhu Sadhu
Bodhidharma. Tho its unclear who he was exactly, some say he was multiple people. The branching lines of Buddhism is fascinating, and permeates through what is practiced in SE Asia and Japan, Sri Lanka and elsewhere today.
Arguably the largest art gallery in the world, and key to understanding the true heart of Buddhism. Truly, thankyou
I regard highly the effort of NHK they made documentary works 40 years ago. Thank you again NHK~

Indian buddhist monk " venerable "Bhodhidham" or "Tak mo".
Bodhidharma. Tho its unclear who he was exactly, some say he was multiple people. The branching lines of Buddhism is fascinating, and permeates through what is practiced in SE Asia and Japan, Sri Lanka and elsewhere today.
