    Absolutely love this documentary, I'm incredibly honored to have been a part of it.
    We had so much fun filming that day, thank you for inviting me to a site I wouldn't have otherwise seen.

      It's the way archaeology in Egypt used to work. A division of the loot. The Amarna Letters, for example, are scattered around the world. Then there's the beautiful dyad of pre-regnal Horemheb and first wife Amenia in the British Museum, taken from Saqqara... their missing unusually clasped hands are in Egypt... And who knows what is buried in private collections.

Peter Ustinov, Jean Simmons, Edwin Purdom, Gene Tierney and the beautiful Bella Darvi. It's about the life of a physician during the reign of Akhenaton and it is lush beyond description. @@CurtisRyanWoodside Do you speak and read French? The novel it's based on - 'Sinouhé l'Egyptien' - by Mika Waltari is really good but I don't think there's an English translation. Another novel set in Carthage that I've always wanted to see in film is Flaubert's 'Salambo'. Have you read that? There are great English translations of that. Sad fact - Bella Darvi committed suicide at age 42. She was Darryl Zanuck's mistress and her last name is made up from 'Dar' (as in Darryl) and 'Vi' (as in Virginia Zanuck, his wife). He eventually married Bella but divorced her when he found out she was bisexual. But as Nefer, she was stunning.

For the life of me, I don't even remember the author or title. I do recall reading this over 40 years ago, I do remember the female queen who worshipped the crocodile. The queen would go regularly in a boat and feed the crocodiles to pay homage, but that's about all I can remember. I apologise if I gave the wrong impression. I know you have an immense amount of knowledge, so would know everything written about the queen. I do love your journeys, I hope you continue far into the future. Cheers Rosemary

    It must feel like such an honor that you're able to go see these incredible pieces of ancient history. I have loved Ancient Egyptian history since i was a little girl. Whenever an Ancient Egypt exhibit came to the Museum of Natural History in Denver, CO I'd get so excited and go so many times. I remember when the King Ramses exhibit came and i was in awe! Even as a little kid I wished desperately that I could "go back" and felt so... depressed (? Empty? Alone?) that I couldn't and never will be able to see Ancient Egypt in all her glory. That thought has LITERALLY ALWAYS depressed the hell out of me. Weird, I know, I don't get it. 🤷‍♀️

    A superb film about the very late Middle Kingdom.. Fascinating narrative of discovery and stunningly beautiful artifacts (and crocodiles!). Note: there may be a bit of confusion in using both the Hellenised name "Sesostris" and the Egyptian version "Senusret". Three kings of that name in Dynasty 12. 50:54 I find Middle Kingdom sculpture so much more expressive and realistic than that of the New Kingdom, when Pharaonic statues became rather more generic. Of course, the stone used in the Old and Middle kingdoms was so much harder and finer. 1:12:22 The stuff on Hor Awybre is amazing... I never knew that there was an intact burial from that period.

      Cleo would have worshipped Hathor rather. There are many kings and queens we haven’t found yet… sobekneferu being one of those

    @58:00 Isn't Nubkaura Amenemhat II? So his name is Nubkauranakht which means strong is Nubkaura (the king). It is not his name in a cartouche. But of king Amenemhat II.
    Thank you for the documentary!

    Isn't the statue at 08:18 a statue of Senusret the first? I have seen it in several art history books described like such...

    • @CurtisRyanWoodside
      @CurtisRyanWoodside  6 месяцев назад +1

      It could be but the smaller statues of Senusert are subjective. As they have no name, only the characteristics of a Senusert are confirmable

    Fascinating lesson as usual Curtis glad I waited for a time so I could be rested and have apt attention. Crocs are cute when they are little but scary when they are adults. I have to wonder if they ate them as well the pharaohs and princesses. Or did they use them as just pets or implements of power. Also always amazed how all of this is preserved from further deterioration. Great guest speakers as well :) Amazing stuff :) thank you :)

      I don't know if there is evidence of them eating them, but they did use them for medicinal purposes.

    great documentary I had no idea that there was a earlier female pharaoh than hatshepsut, thanking you so much for introducing her to me. I do wonder if Hatshepsut may have heard about Sobeknerferu and decide that she wouldn't display her feminity in public too much and that motivated her to always be depicted as a male Pharaoh.

      Oh yes Hatchepsut definitely knew of Sobekneferu! She’s on the kings list commissioned under her and Thothmoses iii
