Every generation thinks it invented the wheel. One of my most important fishing lessons over thirty years ago was Dave Harrell proclaiming that the last shot on the line MUST have an effect on the float. It was all river fishing then and I think Dave said he had learnt this from Kevin Ashurst, who had been taught by his dad Benny. The problem is that , as talented as they are, these ‘commercial anglers' don’t have a background on rivers, canals, and rock hard natural venues. Their challenge comes from how many and how quickly they can catch fish from a venue stuffed full with them. The lesson Jamie has just given has been learnt over the years by a multitude of anglers just trying to get a bite. I have been putting shot on my hooklength for more years than either of these young men have been alive. The risk of line breakage is so minimal, if the shot is soft and correctly applied, and I can honestly say I have never had any trouble with losing fish as a consequence. And on canals, with half pound hooklengths and one pound mainline, in winter I have had a 'dust shot' (as we used to call them) just an inch from the hook. The hook was a size 30 and we were catching microscopic gudgeon on bloodworm. Those exact same methods scale up for big fish too.
Yes, ..... it’s true, hooks do go down to a size 30 but it takes a really talented (patient) angler to tie one and a young angler with good eyesight to even see them. Oh the good old days!
exactly
They literally started on canals
I heard Matt Hayes say this and called it a tell tail shot! To see bites!!! Great vid once again lads. 👌✌
I think it'll be Matrix.
"WE'RE sorted on that"... massive clue from Jamie there.
Like this tips video, learnt so much thank you Jamie /Andy👍
Please keep them coming and thank you.
Never fish a hook link. The tell tale shot as Billy Lane used to call it should be positioned according to bite indication. I have put a no 8 as close as 2 inches from the hook for Crucian fishing.
Should do a supplementary video to accompany these types of explanations using a clear tank, would be mega
We’re having talks to sort some underwater stuff so watch this space 😍
Would be great to see underwater shotting patterns in a tank, and the different effects laying it in can have on the presentation of the 'cerve'🤣🤣
Come on the dogs 😂 Andy is class
Jamie would need to sit in a darkened room if he saw my shotting patterns and moving of shot up and down haha
Jamie says you will be able to get some pre tied hooklengths soon to Andy means that he must be going to matrix or guru
Or Preston. Or Drennan. I reckon Guru though
@@MagicManFan my guess is Guru also
Preston done deal
Great vid .right would use this on a commercial or a canal. I going to try on a deep river on a match tomorrow lol both the way congratulations to Andy on the new signing
Thanks lads....makes sense to me and something I will be trying out in my practise sessions...and, of course, on matches!
This is why I love pole fishing for skimmers and bream. The refinement
Richard Walker in his Angling Times column used to say, that the most important shot was the one nearest the hook. He also said that this could also be the total weight required for loading the float( didnt have pole floats as we know them now! Mainly various bird quills)
Laurel & Hardy have got nowt on you two lol 😂 love the the vids lads 👍
My dad always put shot on his hooklength, would Stotz or Styl be better, cos you can move them around with no damage
Great video lads, I have never thought about putting shot on my hooklength before when making pole rigs but will give it a try next time I make some
Very informative again guys thank you.
When fishing fine for roach, etc . I dont like to use loop to loop. I like to tie my hook length to my main line. i think you get better presentation & smoother fall on your hook bait.
Bob Nudd does similar, certainly a neat way of doing, just a bit more faffy when it comes to changing hook lengths which is why Jamie sticks to the loop to loop.
Especially when you're at venues with carp, the ability to change hook lengths is important.
I've always wondered why people wouldn't put shot on an 0.11 or 0.13 hook length when they'll happily do it if that's their main line.
I use a 5" hook length on the canal with a shot 3" from the hook nearly all year
Fantastic information lads 10 years of working it out in 10 minutes 👏 👍
I've definitely found that different positions of my droppers make big differences depending on what fish I'm targeting and also in different depths too
Just a quick one i allways do better when i lay on an inch to 2 inch on bottom no matter where i fish..am from doncaster..fished Hayfields many times and its the only way it works for me..when i try your way(basically different no a fence
use are the best).
I just find it harder to catch????
Love how j coaches Andy 😂👍🏽
Cheers guys, does make sense!
Ohhh jamie dropping the new sponsor bomb🤣
The old tell tale shot if you was brought up float fishing 🎣
thanks 👍
I have to use tiny stotz I cannot see tiny shot anymore to get it on the line but I guess it still work
Giving all the best tips away. Lol. I've used this since 1986
This is aimed at Andy primarily but you both could answer maybe.
Now we all know you've moved to Preston can I ask how easy it for you to change your fishing tackle and be comfortable using it all.
I have rods that I'm well happy with but changing gear must take some getting used to.
Ahhhhh my head is battered.. 😂
Jamie mentions talking to Matt Godfrey helps explain. What was this on as I have looked for it but cannot find it.
I remember fishing RiverWear at Chester le street around 40 years ago and fishing with a no8 on 1 1/2lb hooklength.
It was on the live Q and A we did with Matt for the channel members 👍🏻

Thank you so much for the reply. Keep on producing these brilliant informative videos, cheers
Where do get those boots from guys
Awesome gents
Does Jamie not worry about damaging the hooklength when putting shot on there?
That’s why he will never move it on the hooklength. But leaving it in position doesn’t seem to be an issue 👍🏻
Big Hints Andy may is off to !!!???? Matrix ?????
Please do some tank test videos.
At the end Jamie saying Andy will be able to get some pre tide hooklenths? Does that mean he’s moving away from map? Maybe?
He is moving from MAP but everyone is speculating as to where he’s going. I for one wish him all the best for the future
Been doing that before commercials appeared 🤪
Thinking fisherman at his best.
Why would you not use a stot/cube on your hooklength? So you can move it.
Even stotz on a really light 0.08 or 0.10mm hooklength you wouldn't really want to be sliding them around. It only takes a few seconds to change a hooklength so not worth the risk in a match situation.
@@WinningWays good to know your reasoning. Thanks
What type of shot do you use?
Ballabini
GO ON THE DOGS!
Monging for silvers are we !!!
Would putting a heavier shot on the hooklength not ruin the sexy fall of the cuuuuurve
Always a balancing act and working out on the day which is best, natural fall whilst sacrificing some bite indication or more positive with better indication.
Sorted pre tied hooklength…. From matrix maybe?🧐 Surely that’s who andy is going to! Changing the game these 2. Boss!!
Would you not find that putting shot so close to your hook that the fish would go for your shot aswell as your bait giving a false bite?
Done it for 50 years
I still don’t understand
Matrix????
Bettter pay attention when Jamie is giving a lecture, just saying !
Andy's face kid at Xmas pre tied hooklenths yes please
Was a good hint in that video
Why bite off the hook length and put a new one on with shot in different place, why not take shot off and put another shot on in a different place.
Come on Andy are you going to matrix
They called tell tale shot used um since a kid nothing new 😐
Come on let’s find something new and not reinventing to many anglers never really think about what’s happening with there set up.shooting patterns are the first lesson you learn about when you start fishing. If you don’t know about shorting a float you will never be any good. How big your your drop shot is can depend on how thick the tip of the float is and how much the float tip is above the surface and how the fish are taking the bait at that time. As that can change many times
Who taught you Brian? Someone who already went fishing and knew what they were doing.
So what if like a lot of people you’re starting out and don’t have anyone in your family or know anyone who goes fishing and you’re having to teach yourself through magazines or RUclips.
We have all sorts of anglers watching our videos, some have yet to even catch a fish, some are anglers you’d class as some of the best in the country.
So if it’s a subject you feel is ‘basic’ then don’t watch, but there are thousands of others who find them helpful.
