I have Vessel, and they’re very good. The biggest thing that determines screwdriver comfort, as well as that for power tools, is just how big you are. If you have big hands, and can exert more force, then you’ll like some tools than people who are smaller, with smaller hands, who can’t exert as much force, don’t like. I’m 5’8”, and not big boned. Some tools aren’t comfortable because the diameter is too big to fit my hands properly. I have bits I bought from McMaster-Carr, that are diamond plated. You’d be surprised at what a difference that makes. I hardly gave to exert any downward force on Phillips or flat head drivers. They just stay in the head.

Re: the craftsman’s made in China... China gets a bad rap because, legitimately, a lot of cheap junk comes out of China. But people forget that they can also make a lot of really nice high-quality stuff too. It’s really all about the specs and the quality control. If a company has good specifications on what they want made, and has someone there to make sure that those specifications are being followed, then you can definitely get some good quality stuff out of China. Way, way, way too often in these comment sections I see people just having a knee-jerk “China = crap” reaction. It’s unfortunate.

There is a great book "Poorly Made in China". The take away is if you want quality from China you have to have the right specs AND you have to watch them like a hawk. They will cheat the quality at every turn if you are not watching. Can they make quality products? Yes. Will they make quality products if you turn your back? No.

      @judosailor 4 года назад

Charles Perry Yeah man, that’s exactly the case. Of course, we are talking about “foreign manufacturing” in China. Although I suppose it’s not so different with chinese companies. There are some Chinese companies that really care about their products and sometimes that don’t.

Lots of comments, we certainly have a thing for screwdrivers. I am currently not using screwdrivers professionally and I haven't tried them all yet so it isn't fair to say who is the best. Snap-on seems to be the brand to beat for quality and durability but it way expensive for what I do. As a DIY'er I have 4 different style Craftsman sets, Tekton, Wera, Wiha, Vessel, Klein, Kobalt, Channellock, Stanley and 2 styles of Felo sets and I like and dislike different things about each set. The best screwdriver to me is the one that fits in your hand comfortably, has the quality/durability you need at a price you can afford, has a warranty and makes you happy to have when you use it. My favorite now is the Channellock code blue. They are not the highest quality but they were a great price and they just fit my hand perfectly, I like the feel of the handle and they look good. Fortunately, there are many great choices and variety is the spice of life.

Disagree with your matco rep. The holes are for hanging on pegboard, the shafts of the other screwdrivers are prone to bend during that application. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that the holes are just in the plastic ends as well and could snap. I can't believe nobody, even snap-on, does screwdrivers right: Take a 3/8 Extension, grind a phillips or flathead on the bit end and put a handle on it. Then you can put a ratchet inside the end of the driver for leverage or your impact driver for speed. Still waiting. . . . till then to me screwdrivers are consumables, you get more bang for your buck with a cheap new cr-v every once in a while than paying for designer drivers. And the disappointment when they wear is expected, not devastating. My go-to hand driver if I can't use the electric hex impact driver is the "free" harbor freight 6 in 1. Works for 98% of my screwdriver needs just fine.

They clean up better than the soft handle ones that slowly get impregnated with oil and grease and dirt over time.

Mac. Found one in my neighbors yard. Asked him if it was his. Asked if any neighbors were mechanics. He looked at me like I found a dollar store tool from a $1 kit. The tip on it is shaped differently than all others and works all day for everything for me. I’m not an auto mechanic but mechanical for work. I don’t know if I found a Japanese tip or if all Mac are like that but I’d buy the whole set at Mac price if I knew how to buy the rest.

The Snap-On hard handles are now sold under the Williams brand. They're made in the US and cost around $50 a set.

I have several sets of the clear handle Craftsman (made in USA). I like them except the small phillips. I have the same problem you have with the Matco. They slip too easy. I like the teeth on the hard handle Snap On. Do they still make them with the teeth? I am a shade tree mechanic. I work on things at home because they break and I hate to pay someone to fix something I can do myself. Last week I replaced the cold side intercooler tube on my 2011 F250 6.7L turbo diesel. Stupid plastic crap. Now it is aluminum.

Did I miss the part where YOU give us your pick? As a very super extreme boot to being a tech, a friend recommended me the Doyle set from Harbor Freight, said cut your teeth on those then move up to something better later on.

Lots of comments, we love our screwdrivers don't we? I have collected and used many brands of different screwdrivers both expensive and inexpensive and continue to get brands/styles I have not tried- I may have a problem?? There has never been more choices of good quality screwdrivers with quality shafts, and innovative handle designs to fit our different comfort, durability and budget preferences. Certainly professional tools must be of the highest quality with the best warranties but you pay a high premium for that quality. The average DIY'er does not require that level of durability but we all want the best screwdriver for the cheapest cost. I think the best screwdriver is the one that you love to use, it feels good in your hand, has the quality you need at a price you can afford and is made in a country you are happy to support (

Rather buy Wera, PB Swiss, Wiha, or Vessel they make a much better quality screwdriver for less.

Best screwdrivers are the ones that can be easily and inexpensively replaced. I've used these screwdrivers as a professional mechanic for over 25+ years. Stanley 100 plus. I've lost and replaced screwdrivers over those years and have probably spent less overall then what tool trucks sell there's for just one set. Don't waste your hard earned money, its just a screwdriver.

I still use my old SnapOn set. Black, square handle set that's about 8 million years old. They have certainly withstood the test of time. What was the great music in the beginning of this video??

Using the hole to increase turning force is reasonable, but use a center punch. You don't want to bend on a screwdriver, that's ghetto.
Even the best will suffer from this kind of misuse.
If it won't break free after tapping with the kind with an anvil at the end of the handle, you need to use an impact driver hand tool.
Like door latch screws for example.

Milwaukee screwdrivers are good too. 8 piece set at home depot for $20, but I also have the so red and black soft handle, which are very nice too. Used matco ones, which are good but not as fancy as so. Cornwell flats are wierd in the hand. So hard handle are nice but not for everyday use. I prefer a comfort grip when I can get it. My hands will thank me after a while.

    Hello again Justin
I think most of my screwdrivers are from Walmart. The Popular Mechanic Screwdrivers. They have worked well, I have no issues to report. I brought them for the same reason you mentioned. The #1, #2 and #3 Phillips screwdrivers have the Grip teeth, that grip the screw and don't strip the screw head. Mine are about twenty years old. If I remember correctly, I paid about $10.00 for the set. So I can't complain at all!!! Again thank you for another Great Video. Your Aircraft Mechanic

I prefer the hex on the shaft for additional leverage; using the closed-end of a combination wrench allows you to apply more force to the screwdriver. Another issue is that the hole through a comfort handle may allow too much flexing to remove a really stubborn screw. A better way would be to use a Phillips socket or a flat-blade socket (depending on the screw type, of course). It puts you closer to the screw during removal (less force is lost), and you can really crank on it with a 3/8"- or 1/2"-drive ratchet/breaker bar. If needed, a short extension can give you extra length if other objects are in the way. It's also helpful to have right-angle (90 degree) screwdrivers, as well; sometimes they work when nothing else will. Screwdrivers are screwdrivers; find whatever brand(s) work best for you (comparing use and cost considerations) and buy them. Like most, I've got sets or individual screwdrivers from several brands, and all work well for me. Just stay away from the cheap stuff and you'll be fine.

I like the old school snap on hard handles that came with the starter kit I purchased in school. Some of those grew legs. Still have the #1 Phillips in my cart. Vessel impacta #3 for rotor screws is awesome! No issues with the Icon set I got to help me stay on my debt free path. Kept the stubby ones at home because they are jumbo for a stubby. A few assorted ace professional as well. Most used is warrior #2 bit in m12 impact driver.
