I live in San Diego, and I'm doing a 5- or 6-day solo hike in late May this year (2017). Second day on the PCT will be on my 66th birthday, somewhere in the Southern California section. I'm in training, planning, logistics, can't wait to hit the Trail. Did a 2-week solo hike in '84, and solo hikes a few days long in '88 and '97.

I love your videos, but the background music gets really old. I would much rather just listen and learn from you without having to try and filter out that same music that everyone uses.

I find lengthy introductions annoying, it says in the title what its about so please just cut to the chase... and that goes for every youtuber, while i'm at it they can all lose their stupid intro's too, if its under 1 sec long then MAYBE. ok rant over and out

Agreed. Love the info, music is annoying.

Thanks for the video! I wanted to quickly share my AT story in case it helps someone. My family and friends worried about me going out there alone, so I found two other female solo hikers on a forum. We met at the start of the trail. One girl quit the first night. I hiked with the other for a month before we parted ways. After that, I hiked with 2 new people for 3 months! After we parted ways, I hiked with a different guy for 2 months. When he took side trips, I hiked solo. Then I spent the last two weeks with a girl I had met at the very start of the trail. I say just go out there and see what happens! You don't have to have a specific partner or group during your hike. Things change and you need to be willing and able to adapt. I think that's one of the best life lessons from the trail!

Stacey, are you thinking of thru-hiking the PCT soon? I'd love to send you a box or something along the way, if that's what you decide!

Please do a resupply vid.! Things to talk about in the resupply vid.: Places to send, cost to have them held there or if a cost at all. How many days do you think you should go in between resupplies? How far off trail resupply places are. Hitch hiking or just hiking to resupply points. As far as staying well replenished on trail, did you have plenty of water sources or did you have to wait for resupply sometimes to get your fluids? As far as having enough supplies between resupply points, I know it depends on how much you choose to eat each day, what types of food(snacks, lunch, dinner meals) do you recommend to keep you going and help keep the amount/weight down? What were your eating habits, amount for breakfast, lunch, dinner and in between. Hope these are worth touching base on!! I like how in depth you go. It helps people truly get a good knowledge base on each subject you touch base on, THANKS!

+HonUsCo HIKERS Thanks for all the great questions! I might have to make a 2-part resupply video to cover all the info!

I agree. Hiking alone is great. Its a kind of medetiation and therapy being alone in the wilderness. At least for me. And you make all the important decisions by your own. And in big wild prestine areas your decisions are very important, even crucial sometimes. I have a PLB (personal beacon locator) cause I hike in big areas (In Sweden) where there are no mobile coverage and where you dont meet other hikers. It would be foolish not to have one. Thats something to think about.

I've always been too scared to do thing alone. There are so many things I want to do but have allowed "not having a buddy" be an excuse not to do things. I don't think I could do a hike like you did but, I'm working on doing things alone. It's hard and terrifying but watching your video was inspiring. Thank you for sharing! 😊

It doesn't have to start with something epic. I wanted to go xcountry skiing for years but no one would go with me, so I didn't do it for 10 years and it was great; I liked it waay better than downhill which I really couldn't affort anyway. I regret that I missed out on the best years to be doing that. Thankfully, I wasn't that way with most things.
Big life regrets tend to mostly be things not done rather than mistakes from things tried.

THANK YOU so much for your lovely analysis on this important question. YES, we want a resupply video. If you need a few resupply questions, here they are.....1) If you are interested in eating healthy, would you recommend using supply boxes where you can send healthier food to resupply points or is this not true?....2) How far ahead would you recommend sending your supply boxes? Just one or two points? I guess the problem is if you send too many boxes ahead and you stop the PCT, you will lose all those boxes...3) What items would you include more of and what items would you include less of in future hiking boxes? ...4) Is there any cost difference between buying food and shipping ahead versus buying it all that the trailhead store?...5) How good or bad were your estimates of how many calories you would eat each day? Did you find yourself running short of food or having too much food?...6) At each resupply point, did you find your pack too heavy with all the new food or were you so in shape by that point that the extra food weight didn't bother you...7) How many food resupply points necessitate hitchiking? Did you have to pay to hitch a ride into town or was that free?.. 8) Did you ever have to wait for a post office to open to get your food box?...9) Did you feel hitchhiking was safe? 10) What did you use on your hitchiking sign?...haha..........Thanks for all the GREAT INFO.......=)

I was really excited to hear your pros and cons and I kept waiting, waiting, waiting for the number one con of all time and you never mentioned it. What happens when you get injured and not able to signal for help? You never once mentioned the many devices available for solo hikers to carry. You can't push the "I'm screwed" button if you slipped and fell knocking yourself out.

As someone who backpacks with my GF, it is better to think of hiking with a partner as a weight saver rather then "the other person can take more of the weight". The big two are shared cook gear and a shared tent. Shared cook gear and tent will save an average of 1.5lb per pack for a ultra light setup (that uses cook gear) and about 3lb per pack with a more "standard" gear setup.
Be careful with the assumption that "the man" can take a lot more weight. If you are in the same level of hiker shape, there is likely not a big differences in the weight you will fell good with after 20 miles. Really, if you are doing a thru hike together, go by how you both feel. What you want is to both make the same miles and to feel about the same at the end of the day, rather then an ego thing of the man feeling "manly". If you are trying to do 20 mile days, and by mile 10 one person is done while the other person feels fine, move weight around. And this can change day to day or some times mile to mile. This moving weight around can help with the issue of "I don't feel great today" on the plus of solo. If one person is not feeling great but the other person is all about it that day, move the weight around, the not so great person might take just 15lb that day while the "all about it" person takes 25lb and you get miles done that you might not have otherwise.

This hike is unique in that where the water sources/hiking season really determine the length of your days. 25 miles is the must for the average of mileage you do for this particular hike.

I'm 70 soon, hike alone and live alone but the irony is I talk to more people on the track than when I'm in my home. That said I would usually encounter one or two people a day. Tracks in Australia are quiet though anyway. The points you raise are correct in my view. In spring this September I will be hiking with an ole mate 600 miles on the Bibbulmun Track. We're independent not co-dependent. Great topic. Well done thank you.

Great video Ingrid. I am a solo hiker. You did a great job articulating all the benefits as well as the negatives to solo hiking. I have been solo hiking for over a decade and go out on monthly trips year round. It is not for everyone. If you've watched any of the series "Alone" you see many people tap out because they cannot emotionally or psychologically handle being alone. It tests a person. If you are going to spend lots of time to oneself in the wilderness with no other distractions, you get to know yourslf really fast. Well thanks again. I have recently discovered your channel and really like what I am seeing.

I wanna solo hike more, but sometimes I get nervous being out in the wild alone. Do you ever get nervous around strangers as a female hiking alone?

  • @RubenStorm
    @RubenStorm 8 лет назад

Alone I would have the problem with bears, cougars and snakes when I sleep and they wake me up. I couldn't get out fast enough of my sleeping bag. but a hiking partner could wake me up, ask me what that was and I can get the knife ready to get some steaks as far as that animal is willing to share with me 😂😉 ... ok I don't need someone telling me that I can do it, I would just tell my hiking partner on a hill to go first and then look and think what others can, I can do...
I had some things happened to me where I was happy that I wasn't alone. even I got robbed on a trail, I never think of bad people, those criminals... ok, he try to rob my and I messed up his day, but that was only possible because I had a hiking partner 😉

I did Mt Baden Powell in the angeles crest highway, and it just so happens that mountain crosses the PCT, i met so many great pct hikers and offered a few of them a ride back to Wrightwood the closest city. What an experience that was, my name by one of the pct hikers was hipster B lol.

I remember Baden Powell, too, from my summer of '84 solo hike. While still in that Baden Powell area, on another ridge I saw patches of snow. This was in late June--midsummer--no less. But I was born and raised in western New York State, with its own cold, winter snows, so instead of taking any interest in the snow on that ridge, I must have thought at the time something like "oh, snow, whatever."

You statistically are super probable to experience a bad encounter of any sort in daily life before one while solo hiking. There are some shady folks out there, but they are few and far between and the hiking community has a strong bond whether you're a stranger or known face

I'm a lone-wolf type, so it was always a sort of no-brainer that I would solo hike, even though I've only done a handful of one- or two- or three-week treks. If you don't mind me asking some questions, I have soo many... but the essentials I guess I will list here and if you have some way I can message you besides spamming your comments that would be great! I'm running out of time since I don't feel ready for the April group. But here goes...
      - what kind of water purification should I use and how much should I bring?
      - as far as fire starting, what should I bring other than just normal fire starters for when it's really wet out / should I even bother with a fire on nights like that?
      - I want to start from the north to south trail so likely I will start in the cold, what gear did you use for your shells and insulators.
      - what kind of shirts/ pants should one typically wear for this trail.
Feel bad to burden you.. I plan to buy yogis guide tomarrow, I only have a couple months and I have nothing yet, any help is very appreciated! Again let me know if there is somewhere else we can talk about it more!
