    I lost my job managing commercial real estate in Portland Oregon about 3 months ago. It was great to have a summer off for the first time since 1994, but I was actively looking for a new job. Finally found a new job that I’m starting tomorrow.

      You must be very sensible with money if you were able to do that. Everyone should do that and then they’re not living paycheck to paycheck. so many people go through life not having any savings at all, which seems to me would be very anxiety provoking. Congratulations on your new job.

    There are so many positive comments recently on Chris’s feed. I want to let everybody know I read his book on my Kindle. I’m 60 years old and I’m not really into self-help books but I like this content creator. He’s down to earth. I love it when he does videos with his wife. So I bought the book just to see what it was about. It reads exactly how Chris speaks. it really is about maintaining the proper perspective in life at any age. Living with your means. Remembering what’s important. it’s a quick easy read and I found it very uplifting and I just figured I’d recommend it to the people here because it seems like there’s a small community of like-minded people in this comment section.

    I have always found it quite bizarre how the mobile phone industry actively promotes almost annual phone upgrades. You might find this insane but I'm still using a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge. The thing is I long ago installed a custom rom so it's currently running Android 13. Put simply it does everything I need it to do and I think the E waste generated with all these old phones is a serious global problem. Several years ago mobile phones became sufficiently powerful that you just can't justify the constant upgrades. The mobile companies artificially prevent OS Upgrades to make it seem as if you need to upgrade when you don't.

    • @realchris
      @realchris  Месяц назад +18

      These days, our phone hardware is so good, you are right, you can stick with the same one for years.

    • @akshatrastogi9063
      @akshatrastogi9063 Месяц назад +13

      The upgrade cycle needs to change. It should be two to three years. I am sure sooner than later this will happen. Cutomers are no longer lured by gimmick features mobile companies put in their products to make it attractive. One can also think of evil tactics which these companies might use to send updates that destroys old products.

    Simply going for a walk in the park a couple of times a week is extremely good for you. There are loads of self help "gurus" on RUclips but rarely they mention these simple ways you can benefit your health that don't involve buying their book or something. A walk in the park, that is one of them. Another superb and free thing is to keep a diary (what we call it here in the UK, but in the US/Canada you usually say "journal"). This is a private diary you can keep it in a word processing document, don't show it to anyone else. I have seen studies that show keeping a diary like that is just as beneficial for many people as seeing a therapist. It is certainly a lot cheaper.

    It’s amazing how it compounds over time.

  • @MutualistSoc
    @MutualistSoc Месяц назад +3

    My family works at the plant your speaking of. They are getting rid of the Stamping Plant building and moving it to a different GM plant. The layoff is in January. The current vehicle they build is the Cadillac ct4.
    If electric vehicles end up falling through it's said that the plant could be closing entirely in the next couple years.

    • @realchris
      @realchris  Месяц назад +1

      Is your family feeling confident about keeping their jobs or are some starting to look elsewhere?

    • @MutualistSoc
      @MutualistSoc Месяц назад +1

      @realchris My family member who works there has been there for almost 40 years. So he is already old enough and has the time to retire so it wouldn't affect him. But he doesn't want them to close it down because it is still a change.
      A lot of times whenever they close plants. They will do plant transfers and pay workers to move to another city or state to work at a different plant and it's typically goes by seniority. So that's what he would do if that became a option.
      I was at his house a week ago and he was telling me about this layoff. But I will try and get more information about it from him.

    • @realchris
      @realchris  Месяц назад

      I would imagine they will offer buyouts to some people.

    • @MutualistSoc
      @MutualistSoc Месяц назад +1

      @realchris here's a most up to date explanation by my family member. Also I was wrong. They make the Ct4, not the ct5.
      "November the Malibu will end and layoffs will start, January CT4 will stop production and will go on layoff along and stamping will be put on layoff.
      1st shift and stamping will come back as of right now July 2025 for the electric Bolt and CT4 2nd shift won't come back till 2026 all temp employees will no longer be employed when layoffs start
      They removed machines at Fairfax stamping a couple days ago and moved them to Arlington plant so they will only stamp whatever is at Fairfax till January"

    • @MutualistSoc
      @MutualistSoc Месяц назад +1

      @realchris So Temporary employees are most definitely being let go and not hired back. But full-time members should be safe for the next 2 years at least with periodic stoppages. (We still get a paycheck when we are laid off) "Thankful for being Union"
      But if we do officially go into a recession with a large drop in GDP. I could see this plant in Kansas being one that permanently closes possibly in the next 4 years. The CT4 doesn't sell well enough, it has very little commercial usage. The Malibu is already confirmed not being revived. That just leaves them with an Electric Chevy Volt and the Luxury compact CT4.
      The CT4 only sells between 1,000-2000 vehicles a year. And it's possibly being phased out in 2026.
      The Chevy Volt would be the thing keeping the plant open. But if electric vehicle don't do good, or chevy can't take market share. That too will contribute to plant closure.
      For comparison. The plant I work at Produces 1200 vehicles A DAY.
