- Cream - Ginger Baker at Royal Albert Hall, London.
November 26th, 1968
9 of 11
"Farewell Concert" is the live recording of the Cream's final concert at the Royal Albert Hall on November 26th, 1968.
Directed by Tony Palmer, the film incorporates pieces of six performances with narration by BBC announcer Patrick Allen, along with interviews with the band members themselves, showcasing their playing abilities.
The film has often been criticized for both its mediocre sound and visual effects.
In 2005, a special extended edition of the concert appeared featuring full versions of all songs separated from the narration and interviews. The new version featured digitally remastered sound and video including three bonus songs.
One of the very few drummers to successfully meld jazz, African rhythms and rock.
May he rest in peace.
He may be a grumpy geezer these days, you can't deny that he was on top of the game back in his prime.
Mush Room Of course he was! Rock drummers were different after Baker!
Baker was a jazz player beforehand as was Jack Bruce, that's why they can blow rock drummers, bassists away
Baker still is a jazz player, even through his rock days. All those fills he used in and beyond 'Cream" are more or less jazz. Love his mixture odd time signatures with the regular beat which is what made Cream interesting.
RIP ginger

Ginger Baker & Steward Copeland! My two favorite drummers.
I laugh at drummers today.
Haffs idol.... wish you were still here....😔....
Caveman on the drums. Terrible!
R.I.P to a great drummer
:( Ginger is probably with Jack, arguing as always but also playing exceptional music.
He was actually very accomodating in this interview and very good natured.
walleyeking23 also the interviewer knew how to ask the right questions and treated Ginger as an intelligent musician not some “pop star”
Drugs
He is high as an elephant. He's slurring his words a bit and his eyes close at times.
@@Pumpkin-gk2oj Indeed totally under hero here...
Partly because the guy was asking real drum questions
If anyone knows anything about Ginger, is that he was heavily influenced by African drummers, who play to a very different time signature than their western counterparts. Ginger spent a lot of time in Africa during the 70s, so as a drummer of phenomenal talent , it was inevitable that he would absorb the differing rhythms played there. Gingers drumming initially was that of a jazz drummer, but somehow morphed into something very different when he played with Cream. Ginger was truly a very gifted drummer.
Ginger was the GREATEST....Buddy was a METH-HEAD....and Ringo is a FRAUD that can't drum and then there's Ginger Baker!! I admire his humility and his willingness to help others with their drumming skills.
Ginger is the greatest drummer legend of all times! His bass drum technic and african inspired paradiddles are unmached by any drummer in the world!
Agreed
Was
Agree
Hard to imagine if you watched this at the time, that he would have made it to 80.
Genetics...
“Ginger Baker’s more than a drummer he’s an accomplished musician on drums” - Eric Clapton
Freaking brilliant.
And Eric Clapton is a fascist
No. That's not what he said. Eric Clapton said "he's a fully formed musician". Which is absolutely true.
His accent is awesome. "You can play a toy-ime with your left foot...." 😆
At a drum clinic around 20 years ago, someone asked Ginger about Eric Clapton. Ginger said, "Jock'n me coulda made a musician outta the bloke if he wern't such a bleedin' wanker!"
He's smiling!. How good to see him in a good mood.
Definitely on smack though, lol
One of the best and coolest rock drummers ever.
Ginger influenced all who came after...and invented so much of what simply hadnt existed in the form that came before....world beat , jazz traditions into a wider dynamic range.....like Tony , Steve, Buddy, Elvin , Carmine, Lenny, Sly, Neil, and Ringo.....he offered new style and form and sound....language just breaks down in describing the superlatives.....just listen to records and live performances before Ginger and then after.....one then might come closer to understanding the difference.
Ginger could not play jazz if his life depended on it! He simply does not have the technique or speed to do so. Period.
Then what did he play in Alexis Blues Inc. Or Graham Bond please tell me cause he influenced so many great drummers Pink Floyd rush van Halen police zz top led zepplin bad company n many others
S R What total Rubbish! Have you heard the Graham Bond Stuff? Have you heard him with Elvin Jones? I've seen him play with Phil Seaman! Shut up....you know nothing!
Andy Thomas yes go listen to Bob Wallace jazz band gingers first you moron it's all jazz when someone usually says you no nothing means I do I hit a nerve cause you're dumb didn't expect me to know all this yes Phil seamen was his mentor he showed him jazz with a African approach so take your rubbish have your little cup tea n biscuits n do some reading up then come talk to me cause I'll know more then you'll ever know about music buddy
Jeffrey Rutt Pretty full of yourself aren't you Jeffrey! I saw Cream a few times. I've heard many 'Toads! I saw Seamen And Baker do a drum duel at The Sunbury Festival in 1968. After half an hour Clapton walked out unannounced and joined in. I've seen Art Blakey at Ronnie's along with many others! I've worked in the record business since 1968. And you think you know more than I'll ever know? You don't know the half of it you pompous jerk! Fuck Off and take your opinion with you!
He looks like he's stoned and yet still... incredible!
Yes such a nice guy.
Right, later I found out he's a psychopath!
Ali Rafatjah no, not a psychopath. Not even close. He acts honestly, which is what most people don't do in societies. If he's angry, he is totally 100% angry and doesn't hold a thing back. Most people suppress their anger and are rarely total in anything. That's why we respect Ginger, there is no guessing with him, what you get is all there is. That's why he is such an amazing drummer.
Nice comment, I read some mean comments about Baker like their glad he is sick & he can no longer play. The thing is also is everyone believes the media & don't know why situations take place. Mr. Peter Edward Baker is, was & will always be respected by drummers. Everyone has their flaws & Baker's flaws are not his drumming.
We love you, Ginger!
imo, as a huge clapton and cream fan, i would say ginger may have been more key to the cream sound than clapton or bruce. it was his unique style of jazz and tribal drumming that he took into rock and blues music that gave them a unique sound. him and mitch mitchell are my favorite drummers.
I keep coming back to this video just to see 3:28 again
The complete opposite of a speed drummer. He used pauses and slower beats to dramatic effect rather than just show off how fast he was.
iDigaNicePony your'e.right on !
The thing which stuns me about Ginger is how little we have seen of his talent..but every now and then he did something which shows he is a GREAT drummer...one of the best
Bien dicho
I NEVER KNEW HOW GREAT HE REALY WAS UNTILL NOW ... I AM ASHAMED
Fantastic drumer.I love Ginger Baker..
I remember as a young child listening to Toad on the live part of Wheels of Fire double album, it freaked me out as a kid and it still does as a grown man.
Reminds me of Animal from the Muppets, I mean that TRULY as a compliment. Love this guy.
Animal from the Muppets is actually quite literally on Keith Moon but he looks more like Ginger.
Ginger Baker never die.
It should be in the sixties, but it don t happened.
Now he lives forever.
He is dead just keeps playing hahahaha
In critical condition today....
Dead today
Commentary is clever and quick.
You mean the narrator? His commentary is trite and useless.
Flockengruven 3:13 I hate it when people say that to me, i must have heard it a about a thousand times now. It surprises me how ginger stays so calm, i guess he wasnt as grumpy back then.
Flockengruven Ginger didn’t think so.
How little you detractors know!. Ginger Baker is a brilliant musician, and a supremely intelligent, interesting person.
As he got older he became more of a grump
@4:40 play'n tech on the kit with a lit smoke like a BOSS. Baker visited Africa(known for powerful percussionist/masters of rhythm & time early in his journey & been living their permanently for at least 10-15 years. Madman took coke/LSD/BlackTar daily & most def when performing & never missed a phuckn beat ! He's to awnry to die HAHA Nothin but respect N luv Sir G BAKER. Check out his doc BEWARE MR.BAKER 2 see this ol' g's amazing journey through drums. Best drummer ever. Ginger Baker the King of drumming/ Danny Carry the Prince. Keep kick'n awnry ass. Happy i got to see ur story while your still breathing. Definitely what drumming is all 'bout Sir BAKER !!
He and Keith Richards are alive. That's amazing.
and Ozzy :-)
bmacnaughton prolly cause they got to do what they love for a living
Might wanna edit this post dude..
No.
Not anymore. RIP Ginger
Great interviewer! Knew what he was talking about. And ginger what a fucking legend, we all know he ain’t resting in peace, he was one wild sob
The bit at 3:28 was insane.
GhostOfRhurValley 1945 the way he utilizes polyrhythms stretches time..it's quite brilliant, he deserves more credit than he gets. No one else was doing this at the time and no one does it today.
When I go back and listen to those Cream records I have a much better appreciation for what Ginger's contribution was to the over all sound.....and really---I realize they wouldn't have been 1 tenth as good w/o him.
Yes.
When I go back and listen to Cream.....I think, what a load of pretentious, self indulgent old tosh this really was.....
Stevie Ross you mean the Beatles
Millennial Monty
.....hey man, it's just my opinion, I'm not asking you to agree.
Millennial Monty
.......by the way, I've seen 'em live twice and thought they were great......now not so much.
Best drummer ever!
"at this time of day" wonder what time it was eh
If only Jack and Ginger had buried the hatchet and patched up, they would've gone far, very far.
Stilll my favorite Drummer 🥁😎🍻
Sorry, he is NOT the best drummer in the world............No one is, there's no such thing!! He's ok I suppose, but there were/are lots of drummers who could plait Gingers arms
Oh for goodness sake lighten up
Ginger RIP !!!! The kiss was awesome. I will always remember how truly awesome you were and will continuen to be. Love,ALWAYS !!!!!!!
Ginger was and always will be the world's best drummer..not Moon or Bonzo or anyone ever!!!..i saw him play..I know!!
I want Ginger's hair
These drummer like him, cozy powell, Ian paice, carl palmer etc.. were on another level. Nothing to do. They were and always will be unique
and Bill Ward
And Bill Bruford
As I understood it, Baker approached Clapton about forming a group, and it was Clapton who insisted on including Bruce. I'm not jumping to any conclusions as to how important Bruce's role was in Cream, but I can't help remembering that Blind Faith, obviously the Baker/Clapton combination Baker really wanted, didn't last nearly as long.
Hilarious and very cool
Bloody hell I knew he was good, but when he set off with those double bass drums... Mind blowing
He reminds me of King Bumi from Avatar: The Last Airbender (the cartoon, not that piece of shit movie)
Such a nice, sincere guy! How come they say he is a difficult person person. We've got the opposite here in this video. Ans such a tallented guy, really!!! Pity he is no longer around and teach us a lesson or two!!!
Some of the most rehearsed interview questions ever.
agreed. I love this interviewer he just sounds so chill and inquisitive.
Ginger, you made our lives happier with your amazing drumming. Thank you and RIP!
Very best drumer
Mad how ginger baker and sid vicious have the same kinda voice and we’re both born in Lewisham
Ginger could have played in any trio, any jazz combo and in any of the great big bands and he would have been even more awesome. Man would i wish to have heard him with Charlie Parker or Dizzy. On the other hand i'm so grateful for what he did, accomplished and shared.
Rest in eternal peace mate...
Legend.
Interesting interview: r.i.p. Mr. Baker
The groove he plays at 4:40 is absolutely sick.
My absolute favorite! It's amazing that even before delving into Cream I was always a fan of Keith Moon and the notion of sporadic rhythm and almost melodic drumming. When I eventually got my hands on the Cream albums, his drumming style was almost "too good to be true." Baker's style is right up my alley and I totally admire his drumming, it has given me such a better sense of "vision" behind the drum set (especially when jamming out and being able to keep the melody going through my drumming while a guitarist takes a solo).
No point even naming my favorite tracks to drum to, but for starters: Swlabr, White Room, and Tales of Brave Ulysses are tracks that I love to CRANK over my speakers and just rock the eff out to!
Totally agree, Ginger is the greatest. By the way on tales of brave ulysses, are the snare wires off? It sounds like it to me because you can barely hear the snare in the mix
RIP Ginger Baker! one of the best rock drummer ever!!!!
This guy kicks Keith moon and bonzo's ass
Bonham could play better with one hand, then Baker could with two. Baker is awful.
He was the only one man enough to take on the great jazz drummers and best them imo n most people I talk too n he left for Africa for 6 years to better his career there's no better solo then toad John Bonham sucks to slow as ginger Said he can't swing a sack of shit plus gingers drums there are not tuned he wasn't expecting to play as u see
+Sound Blast You know so many people build this image of John Bonham being the greatest drummer of all time. Bonham was amazing, and Baker was wrong when he said Bonham couldn't swing (I don't think he was wrong about Moon though, I've never seen Moon swing but he's still great). Bonham does a hell of a swing in "Fool In the Rain" which is known as the Purdie Shuffle. But could Bonham swing to the extent that Baker could? Probably not, I mean Baker was heavily influenced by jazz artists, while Bonham was influenced by R&B artists such as James Brown. Bonham had a pounding sound, especially with the bass drum, and in jazz it's about playing light and quick. I don't think Bonham could play jazz, Baker can play jazz but he can't lay down a pounding groove like Bonham can. They're two completely different drummers, with two unique styles, however I believe Baker has the more unique style. Also, Baker really influenced Bonham to solo with "Moby Dick", and Bonham really looked up to Baker.
+Sound Blast No haha I think you misunderstood me, or I didn't word it well. I don't think Bonham plays in a bashing sense, I've played the drums since I was eight, and studied Bonham and I know he's brilliant. I was trying to say that Bonham has a loud sound to his playing. Like his bass drum sound, it booms. I totally agree with the fact he had a right foot like no one else, just look at "Good Times, Bad Times". Baker on the other hand has a light sound (with maybe the exception of the last 15 or so seconds in "White Room") and used double bass a lot in his solos. I think Bonham was much more rooted into rock than Baker, and Baker was much more rooted into world music such as African styles and jazz. Both are great, and it all comes down to who you prefer. I think I lean more towards Baker (but I definitely have a strong influence of Bonham in my playing), because of how different his approach to music was than others and Baker' style is harder to emulate. You have good points though
+Sound Blast John Bonham was also heavily influenced by the music of James Brown, like the song "I Can't Stand Myself (When You Touch Me)" has a groove that Bonham uses in the bridge section of "Kashmir". Bonham obviously slowed down the groove for "Kashmir", but still cool to see how he got influenced. I need to check out more Zeppelin, I stopped listening to them years ago, but they're worth revisiting. Do you know of the drummer, Jim Gordon? He was a session player, most famous for playing for Derek and the Dominos, and on famous tracks like "What Is Life" by George Harrison. Eric Clapton considers Gordon to be the greatest rock 'n' roll drummer that ever lived. Clapton says it in his autobiography, Clapton, on page 122. If you haven't checked out Derek and the Dominos, I suggest you check them out especially them live at the Fillmore 1970. Great jams.
he is now with all the great drummers, rip
Including one thats been there for almost 10 years
I'm still blown away by "musical conversation between your feet and your hands." Intricate musical language! Even the good music papers don't use terms like this!
Dude is a brilliant drummer and musician.
Ginger was also one of my favorite drummers for blues rock and jazz.
Still is. There is a vid of Ginger playing drums with the late great Art Blakey on youtube.
RIP, Legend :(
Mommy I want to play drums.
Well then you’ll need to learn the rudiments.
Rudiments are boring, I don’t need them.
Shows son this clip.
Mommy, can I play guitar instead?
It would still make my day if Ginger was an asshole to me. The man is a legend. Respect.....RIP Jack Bruce.
I saw Cream a few times in the '60's and I always thought it interesting how the other two would leave the stage for a little break when Ginger would do a solo.
Freakin' BRILLIANCE!
Now that Ginger explains it ("If you're using two bass drums, you can play a time with one, you can fill in with the other one, and it makes a pand two together") anyone can do it too! Thanks Ginger! Seriously, along with Elvin Jones, one of the best drummers ever. My respect for Mr. Baker goes up the more I listen. He may well be the greatest of all time.
rip to one of rock n rolls greatest drummers :((
A Drumm God!
He da man. I saw Cream twice.
Timeless drummer, monster on drums, Baker is legendary, Brilliant..
The first drum clinic?
Ah yes....those "rudiments"...every drummer starts there and MUST Know! :)
ginger baker is the fucking best that ever! lived.fuck all the rest .yeh bonzo was great but he said himself ginger baker was his idol .case fucking closed.
The greatest rock drummer in history
He actually says 'Uhhh, at this time of the day'.
But it's still hilarious!
Ginger Baker is a legend in Rock.
Coming to this interview from Beware of Mr. Baker. The fact that he's smiling alone makes the difference night and day.
same with me. just watching last night.
He's actually the same as me when someone asks what I do at work.
You laugh at today's drummers? You obviously aren't listening to the right drummers, then.
Another S. O. B. but the best - Buddy Rich
Buddy Rich? There's only so many single stroke rolls I can handle. Sure, he had probably the best technique of all time and he's one of the fastest players of all time, but Ginger's playing is so much more interesting and colourful, he shits on Buddy in my opinion.
wow , thats funny
The best percussionist ever, he is!
I cop pulls him over and asked, "do you know why you were speeding?" and he says "I think it's my left foot." 2:27 OK, sir, please step out of the car.
He was one of the greatest...
Absolutely love Ginger's opening... "actually, I don't practice" ;-) priceless
a good drummer with a heroin problem
The heroin wasn't as bad as his shitty disposition.
MerkinMuffly gou fak ior mada
A great drummer with a heroin solution
MerkinMuffly the same can be said about any drummer.
Yeah, I think he's the greatest rich
I love the change Baker goes through. He's talking and he seems like a normal guy. As soon as he starts to play, watch his face. He is suddenly the fierce "hammer of the gods" legend. It's uncanny. As soon as he stops, he's good ol' cockney Ginger Baker. Hit a drum, he's Thor. Scary!
The worlds greatest drummer!
Well said!
A fuckin legend!!!!
Thank you I mean this really
He's amazing. Here even looks nice
Hahaha
GB plays so melodically. Wonderful phrasing.
One of the best ever
RIP
Best of the best
As high as a kite. Poor sod.
.
King of all drumers.
