The thing which stuns me about Ginger is how little we have seen of his talent..but every now and then he did something which shows he is a GREAT drummer...one of the best
I'm still blown away by "musical conversation between your feet and your hands." Intricate musical language! Even the good music papers don't use terms like this!
Ali Rafatjah no, not a psychopath. Not even close. He acts honestly, which is what most people don't do in societies. If he's angry, he is totally 100% angry and doesn't hold a thing back. Most people suppress their anger and are rarely total in anything. That's why we respect Ginger, there is no guessing with him, what you get is all there is. That's why he is such an amazing drummer.
Nice comment, I read some mean comments about Baker like their glad he is sick & he can no longer play. The thing is also is everyone believes the media & don't know why situations take place. Mr. Peter Edward Baker is, was & will always be respected by drummers. Everyone has their flaws & Baker's flaws are not his drumming.
Baker still is a jazz player, even through his rock days. All those fills he used in and beyond 'Cream" are more or less jazz. Love his mixture odd time signatures with the regular beat which is what made Cream interesting.
I remember as a young child listening to Toad on the live part of Wheels of Fire double album, it freaked me out as a kid and it still does as a grown man.
If anyone knows anything about Ginger, is that he was heavily influenced by African drummers, who play to a very different time signature than their western counterparts. Ginger spent a lot of time in Africa during the 70s, so as a drummer of phenomenal talent , it was inevitable that he would absorb the differing rhythms played there. Gingers drumming initially was that of a jazz drummer, but somehow morphed into something very different when he played with Cream. Ginger was truly a very gifted drummer.
Ginger was the GREATEST....Buddy was a METH-HEAD....and Ringo is a FRAUD that can't drum and then there's Ginger Baker!! I admire his humility and his willingness to help others with their drumming skills.
Flockengruven 3:13 I hate it when people say that to me, i must have heard it a about a thousand times now. It surprises me how ginger stays so calm, i guess he wasnt as grumpy back then.
When I go back and listen to those Cream records I have a much better appreciation for what Ginger's contribution was to the over all sound.....and really---I realize they wouldn't have been 1 tenth as good w/o him.
At a drum clinic around 20 years ago, someone asked Ginger about Eric Clapton. Ginger said, "Jock'n me coulda made a musician outta the bloke if he wern't such a bleedin' wanker!"
My absolute favorite! It's amazing that even before delving into Cream I was always a fan of Keith Moon and the notion of sporadic rhythm and almost melodic drumming. When I eventually got my hands on the Cream albums, his drumming style was almost "too good to be true." Baker's style is right up my alley and I totally admire his drumming, it has given me such a better sense of "vision" behind the drum set (especially when jamming out and being able to keep the melody going through my drumming while a guitarist takes a solo). No point even naming my favorite tracks to drum to, but for starters: Swlabr, White Room, and Tales of Brave Ulysses are tracks that I love to CRANK over my speakers and just rock the eff out to!
Totally agree, Ginger is the greatest. By the way on tales of brave ulysses, are the snare wires off? It sounds like it to me because you can barely hear the snare in the mix
@4:40 play'n tech on the kit with a lit smoke like a BOSS. Baker visited Africa(known for powerful percussionist/masters of rhythm & time early in his journey & been living their permanently for at least 10-15 years. Madman took coke/LSD/BlackTar daily & most def when performing & never missed a phuckn beat ! He's to awnry to die HAHA Nothin but respect N luv Sir G BAKER. Check out his doc BEWARE MR.BAKER 2 see this ol' g's amazing journey through drums. Best drummer ever. Ginger Baker the King of drumming/ Danny Carry the Prince. Keep kick'n awnry ass. Happy i got to see ur story while your still breathing. Definitely what drumming is all 'bout Sir BAKER !!
Now that Ginger explains it ("If you're using two bass drums, you can play a time with one, you can fill in with the other one, and it makes a pand two together") anyone can do it too! Thanks Ginger! Seriously, along with Elvin Jones, one of the best drummers ever. My respect for Mr. Baker goes up the more I listen. He may well be the greatest of all time.
Ginger could have played in any trio, any jazz combo and in any of the great big bands and he would have been even more awesome. Man would i wish to have heard him with Charlie Parker or Dizzy. On the other hand i'm so grateful for what he did, accomplished and shared.
Ginger was also one of my favorite drummers for blues rock and jazz. Still is. There is a vid of Ginger playing drums with the late great Art Blakey on youtube.
GhostOfRhurValley 1945 the way he utilizes polyrhythms stretches time..it's quite brilliant, he deserves more credit than he gets. No one else was doing this at the time and no one does it today.
Such a nice, sincere guy! How come they say he is a difficult person person. We've got the opposite here in this video. Ans such a tallented guy, really!!! Pity he is no longer around and teach us a lesson or two!!!
I love the change Baker goes through. He's talking and he seems like a normal guy. As soon as he starts to play, watch his face. He is suddenly the fierce "hammer of the gods" legend. It's uncanny. As soon as he stops, he's good ol' cockney Ginger Baker. Hit a drum, he's Thor. Scary! The worlds greatest drummer!
I saw Cream a few times in the '60's and I always thought it interesting how the other two would leave the stage for a little break when Ginger would do a solo.
I was lucky enough to me his son koffi baker, he played and sounded like his dad ginger, the had his crashes set the same with the rivets. His son said the same thing in this video it was amazing!
Ginger influenced all who came after...and invented so much of what simply hadnt existed in the form that came before....world beat , jazz traditions into a wider dynamic range.....like Tony , Steve, Buddy, Elvin , Carmine, Lenny, Sly, Neil, and Ringo.....he offered new style and form and sound....language just breaks down in describing the superlatives.....just listen to records and live performances before Ginger and then after.....one then might come closer to understanding the difference.
Then what did he play in Alexis Blues Inc. Or Graham Bond please tell me cause he influenced so many great drummers Pink Floyd rush van Halen police zz top led zepplin bad company n many others
S R What total Rubbish! Have you heard the Graham Bond Stuff? Have you heard him with Elvin Jones? I've seen him play with Phil Seaman! Shut up....you know nothing!
Andy Thomas yes go listen to Bob Wallace jazz band gingers first you moron it's all jazz when someone usually says you no nothing means I do I hit a nerve cause you're dumb didn't expect me to know all this yes Phil seamen was his mentor he showed him jazz with a African approach so take your rubbish have your little cup tea n biscuits n do some reading up then come talk to me cause I'll know more then you'll ever know about music buddy
Jeffrey Rutt Pretty full of yourself aren't you Jeffrey! I saw Cream a few times. I've heard many 'Toads! I saw Seamen And Baker do a drum duel at The Sunbury Festival in 1968. After half an hour Clapton walked out unannounced and joined in. I've seen Art Blakey at Ronnie's along with many others! I've worked in the record business since 1968. And you think you know more than I'll ever know? You don't know the half of it you pompous jerk! Fuck Off and take your opinion with you!
Ginger revolutionised drumming and was a huge influence on music at the end of the sixties. His jazz and blues origins were integral to the Cream sound. When Cream were at their peak Ginger was as famous as Jack and Eric and he is deservedly a true legend.
+Some One BS! it depends on ones health.. if you have a strong immune system you can get away with it for awhile but you have to stop once you feel your system starts to feel tired and weak which is why Clapton Richards and few others have survived.. others like Keith Moon Andy Gibb Gary Thain and others had weak systems at such early stage in their short lives.. Keith's was aggravated by taking way too many pills which weakened his heart and it was exacerbated by the anti alcoholic pills which killed him Like Keith, Gary Thain also took way too much of just about anything that he could get his grubby hands on to get him high and that also weakened his system and his body couldn't take it anymore and ended his life too early at age 27.. Andy Gibb also was in a similar way taking too much cocaine that weakened his heart and he died from a heart attack so early at the age of 30.. Same goes for Paul Kossoff who took too much and his heart stopped while flying on a plane at ripe age of 25... Those are just a few examples that contradicts that wild theory of yours...BUT understand this.. NOBODY ever takes an extreme amount of drugs throughout their entire lives and make it all the way to old age which is impossible.. I dare ya to name one person who has done just that and If there ever was one.. He wouldn't be human to begin with

Some One BULLSHIT all 3 have quit many years ago theres no WAY they would be alive this long.. you THINK they are still on drugs but in reality you are DEAD wrong!! They still do drink on occasion but THATS IT! Show me the article or clip where you CLAIM they admit they are still doing it..

One of the very few drummers to successfully meld jazz, African rhythms and rock.
May he rest in peace.
The thing which stuns me about Ginger is how little we have seen of his talent..but every now and then he did something which shows he is a GREAT drummer...one of the best
He's smiling!. How good to see him in a good mood.
Definitely on smack though, lol
Timeless drummer, monster on drums, Baker is legendary, Brilliant..
He was actually very accomodating in this interview and very good natured.
walleyeking23 also the interviewer knew how to ask the right questions and treated Ginger as an intelligent musician not some “pop star”
Drugs
He is high as an elephant. He's slurring his words a bit and his eyes close at times.
@@Pumpkin-gk2oj Indeed totally under hero here...
Partly because the guy was asking real drum questions
Hard to imagine if you watched this at the time, that he would have made it to 80.
Genetics...
One of the best and coolest rock drummers ever.
RIP ginger

Best of the best
I NEVER KNEW HOW GREAT HE REALY WAS UNTILL NOW ... I AM ASHAMED
I'm still blown away by "musical conversation between your feet and your hands." Intricate musical language! Even the good music papers don't use terms like this!
He looks like he's stoned and yet still... incredible!
Yes such a nice guy.
Right, later I found out he's a psychopath!

Fantastic drumer.I love Ginger Baker..
Ginger, you made our lives happier with your amazing drumming. Thank you and RIP!
R.I.P to a great drummer
:( Ginger is probably with Jack, arguing as always but also playing exceptional music.
He may be a grumpy geezer these days, you can't deny that he was on top of the game back in his prime.
Mush Room Of course he was! Rock drummers were different after Baker!
Baker was a jazz player beforehand as was Jack Bruce, that's why they can blow rock drummers, bassists away
Baker still is a jazz player, even through his rock days. All those fills he used in and beyond 'Cream" are more or less jazz. Love his mixture odd time signatures with the regular beat which is what made Cream interesting.
Absolutely love Ginger's opening... "actually, I don't practice" ;-) priceless
Great interviewer! Knew what he was talking about. And ginger what a fucking legend, we all know he ain’t resting in peace, he was one wild sob
Ginger is the greatest drummer legend of all times! His bass drum technic and african inspired paradiddles are unmached by any drummer in the world!
Agreed

Stilll my favorite Drummer 🥁😎🍻
I remember as a young child listening to Toad on the live part of Wheels of Fire double album, it freaked me out as a kid and it still does as a grown man.
Toad? The swiss band?

Dude is a brilliant drummer and musician.
Commentary is clever and quick.
You mean the narrator? His commentary is trite and useless.
Flockengruven 3:13 I hate it when people say that to me, i must have heard it a about a thousand times now. It surprises me how ginger stays so calm, i guess he wasnt as grumpy back then.
Flockengruven Ginger didn’t think so.

Yes.
When I go back and listen to Cream.....I think, what a load of pretentious, self indulgent old tosh this really was.....
Stevie Ross you mean the Beatles
Millennial Monty
.....hey man, it's just my opinion, I'm not asking you to agree.
Millennial Monty
.......by the way, I've seen 'em live twice and thought they were great......now not so much.
At a drum clinic around 20 years ago, someone asked Ginger about Eric Clapton. Ginger said, "Jock'n me coulda made a musician outta the bloke if he wern't such a bleedin' wanker!"

I keep coming back to this video just to see 3:28 again
His accent is awesome. "You can play a toy-ime with your left foot...." 😆
These drummer like him, cozy powell, Ian paice, carl palmer etc.. were on another level. Nothing to do. They were and always will be unique
and Bill Ward
And Bill Bruford
Ginger Baker never die.
It should be in the sixties, but it don t happened.
Now he lives forever.
He is dead just keeps playing hahahaha
In critical condition today....
Dead today
“Ginger Baker’s more than a drummer he’s an accomplished musician on drums” - Eric Clapton
Freaking brilliant.
And Eric Clapton is a fascist
No. That's not what he said. Eric Clapton said "he's a fully formed musician". Which is absolutely true.
My absolute favorite! It's amazing that even before delving into Cream I was always a fan of Keith Moon and the notion of sporadic rhythm and almost melodic drumming. Bloody hell I knew he was good, but when he set off with those double bass drums... Mind blowing
Coming to this interview from Beware of Mr. Baker. The fact that he's smiling alone makes the difference night and day.

Hilarious and very cool

He makes it look sooooo easy.
Just needs a third hand to hold a cocktail, which of course he wouldn't spill. While playing and talking and having a smoke.
Incredible.
Haffs idol.... wish you were still here....😔....
He actually says 'Uhhh, at this time of the day'.
But it's still hilarious!
