Do you have any advice for someone who’s getting braces when they’ve already played longer than 7 years? I’m entering university next year and majoring in music. I’ve never been able to afford braces until now which is why I’m so late.. but I’m nervous on whether I should take the risk of getting braces the summer before uni.. what are your thoughts? Do you personally think it would be possible to improve?
Hi Laura, That's a great question. If you can afford Invisalign (or one of the other brands of clear retainers), it's realllly good for wind players because you can just take them out. And because you're older than the average braces-wearer, you'd likely be pretty disciplined at making sure you put them back in after playing! if you get normal braces, there's a good chance they'll affect your playing. It's the reason I didn't get braces when I was 22 when I first looked into it - i was studying at the sydney conservatorium of music and I didn't want to (temporarily) ruin my flute playing. Having said that, I have a student at the moment and she got braces a few weeks ago - and it didn't affect her playing at all. That's rare, but it does happen. Good luck with your decision!
I was watching through the video, but this isn’t gonna work for me. I have a concert in a month. My teacher said I’ll have enough time but I don’t think I will.
Hi Jane I’m currently on a two year treatment Invisalign 8 months in and haven’t played at all for the 8 months but I really miss it. I used to practice 2-3 hours a day before my treatment (I have a DipABRSM) my question is how did you continue to play and practice everyday with your Invisalign out and did it affect your treatment?. I don’t I’d be able to take them out for 2-3 per day plus the few hours for eating and drinking etc.
Hi Chris! Woohoo for your invisalign! I found that if I took them out, then practiced for say 1 hour, they would be a little tight, so i'd put them back in for an hour or so, then take them out and keep playing. I figured that having them in for 20 or so hours a day would do the job, and there were no adverse affects for me, but see what your orthodontist says. Good luck!
I've got invis. So I can take them off which is great but I'm finding it gross I know I have loads more spit. Particularly on high notes. Maybe it's just teething issues (unintentional pun) as I've not had them long.
haha Vickie! I liked your pun :) That's interesting you have more spit - I don't think i did. Hopefully you work it out so that's you can still play comfortably!
please help me. my upper teeth are in front and the middle teeth are far apart, now i want to put veneers on it, so the teeth will have to move a little and move back, and the hole will close. I’m playing on flute in orchestra,I'm afraid I won't be able to play and I'm also afraid that the sound might change: Please tell me if anyone had this problem
Hi M.G, After any dental work, there may be a period of adjusting your embouchure to this new position. This new embouchure may feel strange at first but hopefully after a short period of time you will adapt to this new positioning. I hope it goes well!
is there a way to help with breathing when you have asthma? i'm a beginner and in 6th grade and i've been trying to get the right type of breathing but i just keep on losing breath
Hi Mochi - that's no good that you keep losing your breath when playing. When I demonstrate it, I hate the feeling of getting light-headed! Plus it's frustrating to run out of air. As for your asthma, I would take the suggestions of your doctors to help you breathe more fully. It's certainly possible to get really good at the flute when you have asthma. My colleague (also a flute player) has asthma and she says flute playing helped her asthma when she was growing up. Also - lots of people struggling with running out of air, even when they don't have asthma. Try to make sure the hole in your mouth is as small as you can get it. It will conserve your air and let you play longer phrases. Good luck!
I suggest you consult your doctor to see whether it is appropriate for you to have puff of bronchodilator medicine 15 min before you start playing the flute. I too have asthma and one diaphragm is defective. That’s amongst a host of other co-morbidities. I complied with Jane’s advice a couple of.months ago, and I can now play around half the number of notes I can play on my other regular woodwind instrument. My airways and lungs haven’t improved, but the breathlessness has. Jane is an excellent flute teacher. A retired paediatrician, Hong Kong, China
Oooo it's hard when you just get braces. You will get used to playing the flute with braces - just do your best in your audition. And be sure to tell the people auditioning you that you just got braces. Hopefully they will understand!
I play the flute with braces on and sometimes it's in the pain in the grass
Hi Michael, yes I know what you mean. My students sometimes need to take a break in lessons because of their braces!

Can you do offset embouchure?
Hi Anetta! I'd love to answer your question, but can you explain a bit more about what you mean? Jane :)
@@JaneFluteSchool can you do video about offset embouchure, i have problems with teardrop lip and i heard about that. Can you explain it?
Oh Anetta - I understand what you mean now! You can look up my video on "how to play flute with a tear drop lip" and that should help you! Good luck!
