- To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, JamBase teamed with Telefunken to produce the Songs Of Their Own 50-day tribute series featuring a daily cover of a Grateful Dead original song. Our grand finale 50th video, a Playing For Change Songs Around The World rendition of “Ripple,” will premiere the day of the final Fare Thee Well show in Chicago on July 5. With a focus solely on Grateful Dead original songs, we asked many of our favorite artists to record cover versions at the JamBase office in San Francisco, at one of the many venues around the Bay Area, at Telefunken's Connecticut studios and beyond. No song was allowed to be covered twice, and today’s participants Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers showed us “Bird Song.”
“Bird Song” debuted February 19, 1971 at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, New York - the beginning of Mickey Hart’s hiatus from the band that would last until 1974. Robert Hunter is said to have penned “Bird Song” for Janis Joplin, and Jerry Garcia co-wrote and recorded it for his 1972 Garcia solo album. Appearing almost always in the first set, through late-1973 “Bird Song” was a setlist regular but was dropped from the rotation until the storied 1980 Warfield run in San Francisco. From then on “Bird Song” was back to regularly appearing in first sets, last flying during set one on June 30, 1995 at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh.
We closed the JamBase office yesterday both to celebrate Independence Day and so most everyone could head out to High Sierra Music Festival where our crew caught up with Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers. We were thrilled to have Nicki add vocals to the Incidental Animals’ Songs Of Their Own take on “Bertha” and the majestic settings the festival grounds provided set a perfect stage for The Gramblers to record a stunning performance of “Bird Song.”

Yeah man, that was good. I saw the Hips 17 years ago, they did Mama Tried, and then I got arrested. Nicki beautiful voice. Great band.

jambase needs to tel funken that it is way over do to really show how much we appreciate the fact that if there was no warlocks then then what there probably would'nt of been some bad ass kicking ,dancing,apapalyptic,shining,f..king etc....band to roam this planet before we did 200,000 years ago my friends The Eternal Woodwinds is a simple thing that will echo for eternity as long has we are still around to dedicate this with an american flag in the middle,and a mother earth flag on the left to right will be the steal your face right off the left flag.this planet is are fu...g foundation it feeds all of us and we kill the soil and can't even get egg shells to part from the restaurants to replenish the earth's soil.

i do apologize that this is not the complete picture but let it echo for eternity.and keep a look out for the windy wood knockers (knocker) there" only one person in the band so far and if you have a waterfall near by when listening to phish it is absolutely amazing

The timbre from the 12 string makes that great signature riff sound like a cheap synth patch. Also sounds amplified. That didn't help. The 12 string should cover Weir's triads from the Veneta version. That would be interesting. 6 string by itself is much better for the signature riff. Would have preferred just one 6 string acoustic and the vocal. Nicki does great job with the lead vocal. Her recent appearance with Phil Lesh & Friends was excellent too.
When you're invited to do a cover you can do it your way, then some other 2bit dork on RUclips can second guess it
