Thank you so much for this video. I heard a lot that British people can talk about weather for few hours, but I can’t imagine the words. Since I only knew few weather words, such as, cold, sunny, windy, drizzle and snow. This video really helps me a lot to talk about weather.

This is my writing, help me correct please. Thank you!
I am living in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Here the weather is baking hot at almost any time of the year. Sometimes, it is chucking it down and results in the streets are flooding. It is often a little cold in the morning. After that it turns into scorcher and a little hot. It is boiling at noon until evening. In the evening and night it is cool and windy, sometimes it is drizzling, I like the weather at this time most.

    • @Oxfordonlineenglish1
      @Oxfordonlineenglish1  6 лет назад +7

Nice response, Dào! Here are some corrections for you:
      1) '...and results in the streets flooding,' not, '...and results in the streets are flooding'.
      2) '...it turns into a scorcher,' not, '...it turns into scorcher...'.
      3) 'Scorcher' means a day when it is extremely hot, so '...scorcher and a little hot' doesn't quite make sense here.
Hope this is useful for you!

The weather in my country can be very bipolar. It can be scorching hot, and then, in a minute it starts to drizzle. The Philippines has only two seasons a year which is dry and wet season. The start of dry season begins in March until July where it is equivalent to summer time and the temperature is baking hot. Usually, the weather during this season is completely still and clear and because of this, people mostly spend their holiday in beaches. On the other hand, wet season typically starts in August up to February where the monsoon rain starts to drizzle. During these months, storms are primarily brewing and chucking it down. Commonly, weather in this point can be drafty so people tend to wear layers of clothing.
Please correct me with my grammar and sentence construction please. Thank you Oxford English Online!

    • @Oxfordonlineenglish1
      @Oxfordonlineenglish1  6 лет назад +4

Thanks for telling us about your weather, Paulo. You used some excellent sentences and phrases! Here are a few corrections:
      1) '...which are the dry and wet seasons,' not, '...which is dry and wet season'.
      2) '...holiday on beaches,' not, 'in'.
      3) 'Commonly, weather during this time can be...' not, 'in this point'.
      Hope this helps!

In Syria we have 4 sesons.. autumn.. winter.. Spring and summer.. each season is about 3 months.. The weather in autumn is cool and the leaves of the trees becom yellow and most of the plants loss their leaves.. This season extend from September till November and it is the time when the schools begin.. After 3 months of summer vaction the weather in summer is extremely hot and the tempreture rise above 40 digree celesious in baking hot days.. Luckly Syria is located beside the Mediterarian Sea that controls the temprature and increas the humidity but dicreases the tempreture in winter days to becom cool.. Winter in Syria expanded through December till February .. Which is changable started with drizzling then the rain becomes heavier with thunder storms.. January days and ten days of february are the coldest period through the year, which containes a bit frost on the ground in early morining so we walk carefuly to aviod any accident .. But the nicest season is Spring when the ground is covered with grass and flowers and usually we enjoyed going in a trip in a warm sunny weather in Spring.

My country is on the tropical area. Its weather is mostly hot and humid. The north of the country has little bit extreme weather. In summer there is baking hot.The sun shine so brightly and temperature goes around 40০ celcius. Most of the area become drought.in monsoon there is heavy rain fall with thunder storm. Many areas get flooded. Its also cause immenese problem for city dwellers. Most of the roads goes beneath water because of poor sewerage system.Transportation system disrupted. People canot move easily.but in winter people can find some peace.Although the roads become dusty. The weather has not changed much for last couple of years.Though the winter has lost its sharpness...its more likely all the season are same in bangladesh. I feel comortable in spring. Everything looks so ravishing in that period of year.

      3) 'In the summer it's baking hot,' not, 'In summer there is baking hot,'.

It might be useful in future videos to explain where some words come from, particularly when teaching idioms.
For example; To "Scorch" something means "to burn the surface of", so a scorcher would be describing the weather as though it would burn.
I am no teacher by any means, but I thought that this would lessen confusion. As one thing that I have noticed with people learning English as a second language, is that they often come out with some very goofy sentences. This seems like a result of being taught idioms and British hyperbole. They rarely understand that they are being hyperbolic or using metaphors
I only came to this video to send it to a friend as a joke "guide to being English" (the joke being that we are obsessed with the weather, and talk about it too much).
Good luck to anybody learning English with this channel :)
Remember that many English language rules can be broken, we love to have fun with it!

Hi there. You can use 'the weather'. For example, 'The weather is cloudy today.' However, we usually use 'it' (It is cloudy today) because there is only one thing that can be cloudy = the weather. When we say 'It's sunny,' 'It's raining,' etc. it is obvious that we are talking about the weather. Therefore, it is not necessary to say 'the weather'. Hope this helps you!

I live in India and here the weather is quite scorcher and it’s boiling. But Early in the morning the climate is little freezing and sometimes it might drizzle. However at the evenings and nights it becomes quite cool and relaxing weather with beautiful view of moon and stars. Considering all this I would have to say climate in our country keeps changing constantly so we cannot predict a static of the climate

      1) '...is quite scorching and...' or, '...is quite a scorcher...' not, '...is quite scorcher...'.
      2) '...the weather is a little cold,' or, '...the weather is freezing,' not, '...the climate is little freezing'.
      3) 'However, in the evenings and nights it...' not, 'at the evenings'.

This my writing, please help me .Thanks
There are four seasons that Spring, summer, autumn and winter.I like all of them in a way but if I must choose then I think my favorite must be autumn.Autumn is alway between around September and November each year.
I find the temperature much more comfortable in autumn and I can be a lot more active and do more things. The best thing about autumn is the way that the trees change colour. I'm lucky because I live near woodlands. As autumn begins the leaves on the trees transform from green to rich organge. It's very beautiful. Especial, I like the feeling of walking alone under the trees in the autumn .

To English speaking Brits, this video is quite amusing. It highlights many things; how obsessed we are with weather, plus the words and terminologies we use to describe it. I regularly use most of those highlighted in the video.

I mean when light rain falls , it is sooo beautiful. Beauty ,if expressed in beautiful way and in beautiful words becomes more appealing. Am I right?

Excellent video. It helps a lot to enlarge vocabulary and expressions. The only detail which sounds weird to me, is the pronunciation of the vowels in "says" ...I thought the only possibility was "sez"...so it may be connected to a particular British accent.

It's cold and below freezing today. The weather forecast saying this will last till the end of the next week. After that, it is going to be even colder and nasty.

Great answer, Emil! Here are some corrections for you:
      1) '...forecast is saying this...' not, '...forecast saying this...'.
      2) '...even colder and nastier,' not, 'nasty'.
      Hope this helps you!

Today the weather here is overcast and dark overhead, but it is hard to image that there will be a storm brewing. As for thunderstorm, it is far away from our life. It is not cold, just a bit chilly. This is when we walk outside without having to bundle up. Perhaps a drizzle will be expected, as a reminder of which the spring here has never gone with the wind.

Hi Tom, thanks for sharing! Here are a few suggestions for you:
      1) '...it is hard to imagine that...' not, 'image'.
      2) 'As for thunderstorms, they are...' not, 'As for thunderstorm, it is...'.
      3) I believe you mean: '...spring here is never gone...' with this sentence.
Hope this is useful for you!

Thanks a lot for new words and idioms. Let me tell you about the weather in México City. Autumn mornings are often chilly. During the morning is so quiet and we have sunny days, but after meddle day it can change. If the clouds appear on the sky, I want to say that overcast some times it will star raining in the afternoon and sometimes could be chucking it down, but some times rain in a little areas around the city. The most important storm happened in the night. Only in the summer could be coiling day. We never have frost day, obviously never have snow day.

Great, Rene! Here are a few suggestions:
      1) 'During the morning it is so quiet...' not, 'During the morning is so quiet'.
      2) '...but in the afternoon it can change,' not, '...but after meddle day it can change'.
      3) '...appear in the sky,' not, 'on'.
      Hope this helps you!
