  • In March 2016, Dayron Varona became the first Cuban baseball player to defect and then return to play in Cuba when he represented the Tampa Bay Rays in the historic ballgame in Havana attended by Barack Obama. Baseball was a symbol of Obama’s opening with Cuba, and Varona has continued to use the sport to connect people in both countries. He recently returned to Cuba again with two little league teams from Miami to play in Havana against two local teams.
