  • With lovingly restored GWR, 5700 Class Panier Tank No.4612 simmering at the head of 4 chocolate and cream BR Mk1 carriages we are ready to set off along the branch line from Bodmin General to Boscarne Junction. The ruling gradient is similar to that experienced on the route to Parkway station, with an almost continuous falling gradient of 1 in 40. At Boscarne Junction our little engine runs round its train ready to return up the challenging gradient to Bodmin General.

    Rusty rails with weeds growing on the track and a GWR pannier tank sounding like an old person as it chugs along. There is something very British about this video in deepest Cornwall.
    Thank you for capturing and posting it. For me living on the other side of the world it is an historical reminder of what I loved in my youth. In this fast ever changing world it is great to reminisce for just a short time and recharge our memories of yesteryear.

      Rusty rails are fascinating, they have a story to tell, whether they are part of a long disused branch line or an occasionally used siding. A GWR pannier tank always looks at home in Devon or Cornwall, we are lucky that a number have survived into preservation, they are Ideal for the purpose. I'm glad you enjoyed this reminder of the way it used to be, the guys on the Bodnim and Wenford deserve a lot of credit for their part in creating this wonderful window to childhood memories.

    Thank goodness for all those involved in preserving this little piece of the once great Great Western, a once extensive branch system now gone. If only it was still in place to Padstow what a magnificent journey that would be. I hope the impact of covid 19 has not had too detrimental an effect, keep well and hopefully you will be able to reopen soon..

      This railway recreates a little bit of yesterday, from a time when arriving at the end of a West Country branch line signalled the start of one or two weeks holidaying in some idyllic seaside location, many of which were created by the arrival of the railways. The Atlantic Coast Express is just a memory today, a trip on the Bodmin and Wenford Railway is a reminder of those childhood days spent on a sun soaked beach.

    Good morning Tim! I looked at both parts, and I am very excited about the good sound of the steam locomotive. Always nice, how the British cherish this thing and maintain. A nice greeting from the Mühlviertel to West Sussex by Hans. I'm curious to see what's next.👍🚂☺

      Hello Hans, the little engine working hard made a wonderful sound, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I am home now after my trip to Austria where we visited preserved railways and trams along with trips on the mainline with heritage traction. I will start editing videos from the tour in the next couple of months, I am working on a trip from my tour of Australia and New Zealand at the moment. Best wishes from West Sussex 😊

    A lovely ride through rainy England on the steam locomotive. Everything looks plush green with the rain around. Sorry it took me so long to watch the 2nd part. I was preoccupied with other videos as well to give immediate notice to this video. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi, I think it is wonderful that there are so many videos on RUclips, someone somewhere has posted a video showing every railway in the world. I'm glad you enjoyed the ride, the weather is so typical of the West Country, its the rain that keeps everything so green. I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride. Tim.

    My old friend 4612 is beginning to wheeze in his old age.Restored twice, it may be time for number three. I could never ride in the cab because I walk with s stick. Health and safety and all that.

      Hi, I'm pleased to be able to bring you back into contact with an old friend. Steam engines are the nearest machinery gets to being alive, the sounds are a good indication of the locomotive's health on the day. She looked splendid and the guys and gals at the Bodmin & Wenford Railway made our group very welcome, the day was a 10 out of 10 experience.

    Hello Tim, watching this scenery sometimes I thought the forrests should be origin of fairy tales or legends (in Germany at similar scenery they would be). - Heinz

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  4 года назад

      Hello Heinz, I watched a program on television last night about the Harz Mountain railway system, in which they mentioned folklore and stories such as Red Riding Hood and the Brothers Grim - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brothers_Grimm.
      In Wales there are stories about dragons and princesses. In the West Country the local legend is about the Beast of Bodmin, a cat like creature that lives on the moorland, in films it is often portrayed as a hound with a fearsome howl. Forests don't just produce trees :-)

    Another superb effort Tim, just a pity that the weather wasn't more favourable on the occasion of your visit. The loco sounded superb and dealt with the gradient extremely well and, as always, was immaculately turned-out. In passing I have to say how well the track gangs do with controlling line side vegetation, most especially given the respective lengths of those lines. A real credit to all concerned - perhaps they could educate Network Rail in how to control vegetation - notably Buddleia.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  4 года назад +1

      Thank you, the rain stayed away for most of the day, although it would have been nice if it could have held off for another 15 minutes. The loco was well up to the task, with little or no wheel slip and I'm sure the track gang will appreciate your comment about the line-side vegetation.

    I'm unsure what to make of the Bodmin and Wenford Railway. Of course any preserved railway is welcome in my book, but this one in particular somehow doesn't cut it for me. Overgrown track bed, towering trees obscuring 90% of the beautiful Cornish countryside, graffiti on the bridges, that whopping big steel platform obscuring the beautiful old girder bridge at Bodmin General. Hell, most of Bodmin General looks fairly run down once one looks past the platforms. Hopefully one day the trees can be culled and revitalise this beautiful old branch line, because so much is lost from their presence.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  4 года назад +1

      Hi, trees are a problem on railways both National and Heritage, once they are there people don't like them being cut down. Back in the days of regular steam on the main line the line-side always looked neat and tidy, allowing passengers to enjoy the countryside from the trains. As for the metal bridge, blame an over zealous Health and Safety culture. The tracks are a bit overgrown in places, maybe the weed killing train will sort that out. The railway does well considering it survives on a small band of very dedicated volunteers and the station at Bodmin General was being remodeled to accommodate an extra platform, it is usually very tidy. I guess late Autumn when the leaves have fallen would be the best time to visit to enjoy the views across the wonderful countryside. What the railway lacks in some areas it more than makes up for with its friendly welcome.

      @@robertcoleman4861 I'm not sure what the future is for this line, at the moment it is consolidating and making the most of it's existing assets. The route to Padstow is a cycle way today, it is hard to know what the future will bring, but at least the options are still there.
