Damn impressive! Now imagine this... you get hit once, you die. Now my son... go beat The Evil Within on Akumu difficulty without purchasing any upgrades. Good luck ;)
Oh yeah when I was trying this challenge out I noticed that as long as you're making a good bit of headshot and kick combos and knife off the one or two individual enemies that you can be surprisingly liberal with the handgun and shotgun.
During the Krauser fight, they actually made your knife much more powerful than it usually is so it would be viable to have a proper knife fight with him, finishing what they started earlier in the game.
After 15 years I finally realized that if you don't touch the merchant you'd get the standard Resident Evil arsenal of a Handgun, Shotgun, Magnum, and Rocket Launcher through gameplay. Pretty mindblowing.
I actually did a no merchant run a while back. I recommend others try it out. Completely changed up alot of my strategies and made the game more of a survival horror experience.
@@Kratos1902 I actually used the flash bangs and ran away from ppl. I've never done that before, I use to throw flash bangs to kill the plagas and then kick enemies that were stunned. The fact that you're supposed to use the knife in the Krauser boss fight is pretty well hinted by Leon telling Ada that knives are better for CQC, Leon and Krauser get into a knife fight before the boss fight, Krauser is always flexing his knife *and* most players were probably out of bullets from the previous fight when they reached Krauser. He's easier to beat with the knife than with the Chicago typewriter ffs.
Dude Your videos are a Blast ! Last time I played this game on my Wii back in 2007. Now, thanks to quarantine, your inspiring gameplay and madman knife skills, I bought it for my ps4 and finished it 4 times :)
There's a far easier way to beat the pre-title village section, and without ever facing the chainsaw guy. It works on all difficulties, too. Basically, once the villagers are alerted, just avoid Leon ever entering the house that holds the shotgun. This way you'll never trigger the cutscene that introduces the chainsaw guy, and he will never actually spawn. Instead, go into the house on the other side of the main area with the bonfire. It's the house with the padlocked bedroom inside, containing a filthy bed and some ammo. As soon as Leon enters this house, turn around, make sure the door is closed behind him, and then shoot a hole in the upper half of it so that you can see the villagers approaching from outside. Then simply position Leon close up against the door, equip the knife and swipe away. The villagers on the outside absolutely cannot cause any damage to Leon as long as this door remains closed, and no enemies will be able to sneak in behind him either. So just continue to slash at them through the hole until the cutscene of the bell ringing kicks in, and the villagers finally leave. If you're quick enough after the cutscene, you can still collect anything they have dropped, also. It's not really cheating, just a little exploit that makes this first section a total breeze to survive. It also saves so much valuable ammo at this early stage. And afterwards, you can simply search the village at leisure, collect the shotgun, all the ammo, treasures and herbs, and you're good to go! The only real sacrifice you have to make is the large amount of gold that the chainsaw guy drops for killing him, but at this early stage the extra ammo is so much more important, anyway.
@@bigwhopper6501 Yeah, without a doubt, it removes the intended fight for survival/panic element from the scene, and so certainly not recommended for an initial playthrough. But if you're going for any type of strategy based run, then it's definitely the way to go, every time.
@@jaredfawley9532 Yeah, you're right. Thinking about it, I've witnessed him spawn near the rear gate before, too - but he just stood there with a group of other villagers until I had Leon actually move closer. But triggering the cutscene will definitely cause him to give chase straight away, so either way, just avoid him and this strategy will work every time.

I remember trying a "No Merchant" run myself many many years ago, back on the GameCube as there were no "HD remasters" or ports outside of the PS2 version at the time.
