This whole series of videos is great, but this last video is just fantastic…wow! I loved the steps and mis-steps, AND your attitude around them. …Several times, I found myself talking to the screen: “Stop!! that is excellent…stooooop!!!” you never stopped! and I know that inside that final painting are a dozen iterations that I loved along the way. Occasionally I found your process kind of shocking. I’d see a gorgeous painting on the screen and you’d go in with the scraper! omggggggg, could I ever actually do that? Thanks for sharing this with us. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing your flow of idea and practice.

I really enjoyed watching the imperfections and frustrations you went through. I don’t have an art background, I’m teaching myself so it’s good to know that all artists go through many processes before they’re finally satisfied. The hardest thing for me is getting attached too soon and not pushing forward fearlessly. When I get to that point, I stop and live with it for a bit. Thanks, I like your style of painting and the down to earth presentation.
Hi Tanya, you might try working with two canvases at the same time. One one of them allow yourself to get attached, and work with that type of attention to detail to see what happens. In another, push forward fearlessly as you say, and see what happens there. Sometimes it's ok to get attached to bits of a painting, even VERY GOOD. I plan to shoot some videos demonstrating that trust your first brush stroke approach. Anyway, glad you're enjoying this. Andrea

Watching each demo and listening to you describe the process including how and why, and how you feel about it along the way has been so incredibly useful! I really feel like I've had my first proper instructive art lessons! I tried out oil painting during lockdown for the first time and found I've liked it. I just got stuck in. Now a few months down the line I'm starting to investigate all the basics that would have been helpful at the start so that I can take it further. It is very absorbing and has been perfect for switching off from the world! Thanks again and I look forward to watching more!

I don't know what I am doing...LOL......I also love your term "Play Stage"...I start out with no plan, just colors and have a hard time committing to shape or shapes using the colors...but I am having fun, and love playing with the colors and textures...Thank you for your videos Andrea
You're so welcome ! You're right, I should stop saying I don't know what I'm doing. I guess what I mean by that is that's how it FEELS when I get to messy stages where it all looks like chaos. The part I do know is how to trust my knowledge and experience after 30 years to resolve the chaos :)
Wow, feel like I lived this with you! I saw many versions I liked and was gutted when you obliterated them. I would have gone with one of the earlier versions and got stuck. The end result was worth it all, really beautiful work. I must try this myself soon. I currently use watercolour and this oil and cold wax technique is way different and really lets you create in a completely free way. Loved this!
Glad this helped you see a different way of working. You can't layer watercolors in the same way, so you might want to try either acrylics or oil paint to do some layering ! And of course cold wax is a great way to go too

Just found your videos and am inspired. Think I’ll get some cold wax to add to oils as acrylics dry so fast- faster than my brain can think. Best advice is “don’t get attached to one spot” and “ keep turning the painting”. Do you ever “see” images within the painting and are you tempted to bring those images to life? Love,love the multiple layers but the question is, how do you know when enough is enough? One good thing about the quarantine is we have time to create instead of running around doing useless things. There’s good in everything
I think the trick is as soon as you start to think, "am I done"? stop painting. Let it sit. Either start a new one, or just walk away and come back to it with fresh eyes. I often think things are done, then...realize later that they're not. Sometimes too, am really happy I stopped at a first layer or gesture because the painting IS done and any more touch ups would ruin the freshness. Thanks for watching :)
I think it would be very difficult for me to know when I am done! I loved this one all the way through and several figures and doorways/paths to the back in the process. Lovely final painting.
Learning to know when you're done is really a personal process. It takes a while to develop it so that it works with your voice and original vision ! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Wow you are very calming and enjoyable to watch! Cold wax is so interesting! Of course I have questions! Does it dry completely or do you have to varnish it for it to become totally dry what do you varnish it with and you actually don’t use any mineral spirits how interesting.
Hi there, nope you don't need to varnish it. You can buffer it like you would a wax floor to make it shine. Don't use any mineral spirits, not even to clean with. Have fun playing with it. I also teach classes in this if you're interested. andreawedell.com

My work has been classed as Photorealism up until recently, but I want to break away from it and become bolder and more expressive, so I'm hoping cold wax and some abstract painting techniques will help me to achieve this. This is superbe! I wished you had several panels at a time! Have you ever tried? You got it balanced and perfect 👌 too many times to count during your painting processing!
Hi Lucy, yes I always have several panels going at the same time :) Glad you thought lots of layers were balanced. I'm very picky about what I'll considered a finished painting, so keep going and going till I get there ! Sometimes it happens right out of the gate, sometimes takes a long time !
Loving these videos! I really appreciate you giving us info on composition. A couple questions; How do you know if something is "interesting", or if something "doesn't work" or "adds nothing"? Also, you had said earlier that for composition, you don't want any hard lines, but at a certain point you do have hard lines and it looks wonderful! Could you please comment? Thanks so much.

Hi, I am having trouble with the scraping back, all the different tools I use seem to create unintended scratches, like the tool was Contaminated by debris, yet they are clean and smooth to the touch. Any advise you can give? Thanks Pam
That probably means your initial support is maybe too absorbent, and drinking up all the paint so harder to scrape back, or it could mean you don't have enough layers down to be able to pull them back, or the layers are too dry. Could mean a lot of things I'm afraid. It's too hard to answer without seeing the work. Have you thought about taking one of my classes or doing a one on one ?
Hi Nina, I go back and forth between wet on wet, and letting the layers sit either over night or for a week at a time. Depends on the effect I'm going for.
Hmmm, I want to say maybe two weeks. I didn't work every day on it though. So yes, because I may have waited a day or two between layers, I let them settle. It takes a while for cold wax to really dry though.
Would prefer to see which tool you are using at which step, but the video goes way to fast to see anything but the change in color. I need to see whether you are using brayer, squeegee, steel wool, etc etc, and how you are making these marks, not just result. consider slowing down a bit? Thanks so much

I am having trouble with the scraping back, all the different tools I use seem to create unintended scratches, like the tool was
Contaminated by debris, yet they are clean and smooth to the touch. Any advise you can give?

That probably means your initial support is maybe too absorbent, and drinking up all the paint so harder to scrape back, or it could mean you don't have enough layers down to be able to pull them back, or the layers are too dry. Could mean a lot of things I'm afraid. It's too hard to answer without seeing the work. Have you thought about taking one of my classes or doing a one on one ?
Thanks very much for posting! Do you work wet-on-wet for all layers? When, if ever, would you want layers to dry before continuing?
Hi Nina, I go back and forth between wet on wet, and letting the layers sit either over night or for a week at a time. Depends on the effect I'm going for.

Those are lots of different layers to get that particular purple. I think the final layers were manganese violet though.

Over how many days was this painting created as you have such a lot of layers. Did you leave any to dry before more paint applications?
Hmmm, I want to say maybe two weeks. I didn't work every day on it though. So yes, because I may have waited a day or two between layers, I let them settle. It takes a while for cold wax to really dry though.

Would prefer to see which tool you are using at which step, but the video goes way to fast to see anything but the change in color. I need to see whether you are using brayer, squeegee, steel wool, etc etc, and how you are making these marks, not just result. consider slowing down a bit? Thanks so much
