  • The Triple Gold Club is regarded as the most prestigious and most exclusive group that the game of hockey has to offer. With the club containing just 30 members at the time of this recording and with each member needing to win some of the sport's most difficult awards, it takes a significant amount of skill and a tremendous amount of luck to earn a place within the group.
So what is the Triple Gold Club? How did it become a part of the sport, and how does a player join? Well let's delve deeper into hockey's most exclusive group and find out!

I believe it was very well covered and well explained and for those not to much knowledge about the prestigious "Triple Gold Club".
It is indeed the most clanging task in the ice hockey world for any player to achieve all three championships, something many great players have never succeeded in the past and many future players will not make as well. It is not all about skills, but timing, motivation, health and a good portion of luck!

The guy’s heart nearly gave out during the middle of a game in Anaheim and luckily he survived, but he had to retire as a result. He didn’t get to leave on his own terms and the Blues were (at the time) still playing great. It was quite a blow to the team and they looked much different after losing him.

Excellent research. What makes it hard to win a IIHF Worlds gold is that NHL players who have won Olympic Gold and maybe a Stanley Cup are probably playing in the NHL playoffs every year, thereby missing out on the Worlds at the peak of their careers. By the time a player who only needs a Worlds championship to join the TGC is available because he was on a crappy NHL team that didn't make the playoffs that season, the player might not be called up to play for the national team at the Worlds because he's over the hill. Very very tough to win all 3. Martin Brodeur is a great example who lost out because his Devils teams were always in the playoffs during the peak of his career, and he really never played in the Worlds. HOWEVER Brodeur did win gold in the World Cup of Hockey in 2004, which might be even more exclusive.

Worlds is kind of dependent on who makes the playoffs. Often times players do not even feel like going. I remember Ryan Miller in his prime said “I would rather just rest and then train over the summer”. I’m not taking anything away from the winners. You work with what you have. I feel like WJ could be used as an alternative for it though.

Very few hockey players set out to win the World Championship. If you are an NHL player competing at the worlds, then your team either failed to make the playoffs or were beaten out in the first round. A more significant triple would be the Stanley Cup, Olympic Gold and a World Junior Gold. These three are titles that hockey players would actually aspire to.

@@bobbyr.7578 correct. The World Championship is different from the World Cup, and Canada Cup. This triple gold club doesn't account for winning a World Cup, Canada Cup, or Summit Series. So Lemieux doesn't count in this despite winning 2 Stanley Cups, a Canada Cup, an Olympics, and a World Cup. Gretzky doesn't get in either with his 4 Stanley Cups and 3 Canada Cups. It goes without saying this doesn't make Hakan Loob or Rob Blake a better player than Lemieux or Gretzky.
