  • I've been getting a lot of questions about the difference we found with the dairy robots we looked at. They all seem to do a nice job milking cows, but there are some subtle and not so subtle difference between the major brands of Lely, DeLaval and GEA.
    What are they? Come along and find out!

    Gea is very impressive robot, my box time on my mono boxes are never over 6:10 on heard doing 40kg average, extremely easy to service and I love the fact you can put a 1% iodine right on the teat end unlike the other brands it sprays...

    Excellent comparison. You should have compared the three robots in terms of complexities, power consumption, ease of cleaning, maintenance, and of course cost.

  • @googleuser4009
    @googleuser4009 Год назад +7

    Also what's different on the GEA is the robot has a brain box that if it gives problems, the company basically unplug the whole brain and puts another one on while they fix yours, it's a good think so you don't have to wait if something pretty big goes wrong and you'd have dowmtime

      Nah sorry but when it comes to dairy cows and milking we want all the bells and whistles lol. The more info I can get the better. If Im gonna spend $1,000,000 to build our barn I better be getting some premium milkers.

    • @farmerjacob
      @farmerjacob Год назад

      @@crandonborth then you have to buy feet and neck transponders for feed and activity. The robot can pretty much only track their milkflow and the milk. Its also situational, i have 60 cows so i have to maintain a low cost, but with 300 to 400 cows you need to meet quantity and then is all bells and whistles help welcome

    • @farmerjacob
      @farmerjacob Год назад

      @@crandonborth and sure with the merlin m2 you can get a lot of bells and whistles. The box is made in Fullwood style, the milkmeter and milksensor are from afimilk, options are with crystallab and cellcount. Transponders are also from Afimilk for tracking, activity, heart monitoring, feed intake monitoring, and predicting events as calving and time tk inseminate etc. These options you just dont have to buy but can. Checkout afimilk for more info with that.
      With lely you directly buy all options and bells and whistles only one i can consider, even tho i did like them less working with them. But management systems are topnotch.
      De gea robots dont last long i would not consider them. Also dont like the box and connecting system. Also delaval is not promosing with decreasing sold units. Also connecting is overly complicated, but they say that they are very good in data collecting. But yeah the robot is not great.
      Boumatic forget this name, the off brand of milking robots. And stay away from SAC.
      Check my second channel jacobs farm extra. I have made videos where i work with the robot, such as connecting and what you see when milking,

We currently are milking 60 cows as well and considering going to robots but to make it cost effective we will be installing 4 Lelys and increasing the herd size to around 260 to 280 or what they milkers are capable of maintaining on a daily schedule. We have a close friend that has 720 cows on 10 lelys so that’s kinda what pushed us in that direction that and I don’t have to milk either. Lol

At the other robots after cleaning and if the cow lift up their leg they can make the teats dirty again.

    I'm milking 100 head and been having a labor issue and been looking at the whole robot thing even though I'd have to redo my whole barn setup since I'm tie stall. My question is what does the robot do with cows with dead quarters or 3 quarter cows with me putting milkers on I can just put a plug in that inflation and leave it off does the robots try to milk the dead quarter or can it be programmed to not put the milker on dead quarters and when you have a cow that has mastitus in a quarter do the robots dump that whole cow's milk or do they separate quarters and dump the quarter with mastitus or does all milk go through the system and into the tank and if you have a cow with a treated quarter how do the robots know their is a treated quarter and keep it from coming into contact with the good milk. Putting the milkers on by hand I'm able to milk bad quarters in a quarter milker and we bleach machine after every cow that has been treated or has a quarter with mastitus. Our milk is lab tested and any medicines found in our milk we pay for a truckload of milk not just our milk and we carry a low stematic cell count and because we can single out quarters when putting milk machines on. I'd like to hear how robots deal with separate quarters because it is a concern I have with going to robots. Can we keep our records for our clean milk we ship and lose production because robots dump a whole cow's milk because of a bad or treated quarter. Any information would be appreciated because no one has ever answered any of my concerns with going into the whole robot game.

    • @FreshAirFarmer
      @FreshAirFarmer  2 года назад +2

      Thanks for all the questions. I remember the time when I was thinking similar to you. Not all robots are the same, but the dry quarter is one they can ignore and just milk 3 quarters. Some can also separate milk and dump based on quality of milk in the quarter - however I’d be cautious. If that robot mistakes or the cow moves to one side and it starts milking a treated quarter thinking it’s a different one - you may have a problem before it can correct itself. I’d be dumping all the milk from that cow both to be safe and because we are actually required to.

    Drafting gate indoor and out $?

    The machine isn't economical for one robot milking 70 cows or 65 in full milk cost is more like 180-200000 minum for a set up properly easy management system. Or 2800 per cow 70
    Or 5-6 year pay off before maintaining the machine for 300 per month before the cleaning products for it that you can only buy off certain manufacturers so 3600 a year +chemicals.
    Then for the machine to last 10 years and be wouth notting secondhand cause the manufacturers won't service a secondhand machine. It just dosen't add up figures wise when you look at the overall picture without been blindsided

      Can having a fully automated dairy allow you to work a traditional job? If you had a 50 cow herd, and say you spent $300,000 to build and automate and $200,000 on 120 acres. Let's say your total investment is $700,000. Will your 50 cow herd pay the debt off in 5 years?
      Guys are out here dropping this amount on 1 or 2 rental properties. Same concept, you only deal with tenants when problems arise. And keep working your day job.
      Do your 50 cows become 100 in 5 years? Do you put in a 2nd robot? In 10 years do you own 3 120 acre farms milking 360 cows? Can you now afford a manager to look after your farms while your still at your corporate job?

    .....so: there is nothing sensible for us, I think!
    These are all outdated stable systems.
    I have in mind a system that is not technical - that attracts a cow, a sheep or a goat - with food into a kind of bay.
    Then the teats are cleaned with a pulsating water sprayer, massaged - and then the milking device is attached and milked.
    not more.
    Clearly there should be animal identification - via transponder - and there should be a contactless inspection of the respective animal - also an internal examination of the milked milk, which should be processed immediately on site into hard cheese.
    The problem: the animals have no connection to humans - they run around freely. And they look for the protected areas of their own accord and can stay there when it rains or have themselves milked.
    The associated problem: there are terraces with trees and plants - kind of mountains!
    I think that what I want and know exactly how it should look and function doesn't exist!
    I'm watching the film here - opening the cabinets is like a journey into a world that is long outdated: today we transmit electrical current and also control data, determined data - via light, laser.
    All the old technology makes what is shown in the film very complicated and expensive! and complex, time-consuming!
    and I think: inefficient!
    You can't monitor and control animals that run around freely by putting them in the stable and planning feeding times and milking times too!
    As with all animals: they know what is good for them - when kept in stables, underfeeding is generally the norm - but overfeeding would be right!
    An animal must be able to eat whenever it wants to eat - and drink as well!
    I'll keep looking: there will be some people who don't stick to the old ways - admittedly, that's what makes them money - but there also has to be something that's quick, easy and safe!
    I think just to be on the safe side: I'll have to design it myself!
    Then all the effort spent searching would just be a waste of time!
    thank you for your information!
    Kind regards from Berlin, Germany
