Right after this video goes live TSM plays a scrims block where the energy is definitely higher and more positive. There's still a ways to go, but the team seems more inspired. Really great that Evan said his piece. Hal's response naturally twists all this stuff back on Evan, Jordan, and even Mac. Hal is a popular guy in the Apex community, and his "grind at any cost and yell a lot" brand resonates with the very young, very male gamer audience. As someone who likes Apex but thankfully has a little more perspective than the average teen twitch viewer, watching Hal talk to his teammates is not an inspiring "grindset motivation" experience. It's an uncomfortable watch- a guy with enough talent and luck to never be told "no" indulges his worst communicative instincts in a competitive culture with a real maturity problem. An army of teenage gamer twitch/YT viewers, many even less well-socialized than he is, validates his toxicity and he never learns any better. He comes to equate his immaturity with success, and any encouragement to grow personally with an attack on his dedication. His ego grows so large it has to be borne by the people around him, everyone walking on eggshells to keep from setting him off or letting him down. To the outside world he appears to be the X factor, but behind the scenes it's his teammates doing the real work of tiptoeing around a massive ego, holding things together for the sake of the collective. When things inevitably fall apart, he doesn't take responsibility. All he can see is the shrinking motivation, not the possibility that he is the cause of it.
I remember watching TSM back in the Snip3down days. At the same tourney where Reps got one of the most iconic Apex win of all time for TSM, he was also blamed for throwing the tournament away when he was poorly positioned for an endgame fight. The game that TSM lost because of that mistake was far from the last- several more games came and went, where the team failed to make an impression in the endgame. To hear Hal tell it, the blame was entirely on Jordan, despite the fact that he was responsible for calling all the games after that where TSM could have won. Even months later, in an official TSM youtube video, the duo were asked about that moment directly, and Hal failed to demonstrate any real perspective about the situation, more or less doubling down on his blame game. It was a "true colors" moment that this drama has called back to the front of my mind. The two of them went on to win many more games and tourneys after that, and I'm sure they had their own way of getting through it. But it's a shame that in order to get it behind him, Reps had to bear that kind of disrespect. It's unfair.
As Hal puts his own response out there, the fanboy army seems eager to villainize Evan. They buy into Hal's self-centered peacocking because it makes them feel powerful by proxy. They are wrong, full stop. Spitting out truisms like "it's pro apex, toughen up" makes young men (who are probably also bad Apex players) feel tough and cool. Competitive play raises standards, certainly, but does not make a person any less human. And does anyone honestly believe that any person, doing any thing, will do their best if they are being constantly denigrated and talked down to? It's not about sunshine and rainbows, it's about building an environment where everyone is best able to contribute, and feels respected. There's a difference between criticizing and bringing out the best in your teammates, and abusing trust - and it's an immature mistake to think the more brutal one can be means their statements are more wise.
The Apex community's embrace of this kind of toxicity is a perfect case study of eSports' as a whole's inability to "grow up" and break through to the mainstream. It's still a niche interest for sweaty gamers, and the way people watch and talk about it proves it, sadly.
Now the sigma grindmaster Apex sweats have the team to root for- Hal has a teammate in Zero who can match his braggadocious performance of a tough-as-nails badass who plays computer games for 8 hours a day. There's definitely a lot of raw talent on that team- and they'll most likely tear each other apart after a while. If Evan, Reps, and Zap can find the motivation within themselves to write a new story, I think it will be a great one.

It’s beneficial for most people, but there is a minority out there where grinding 7 days a week is just how they operate. You see it in every profession. And those people that *can* do that are typically the best at what they do. Its just most people aren’t Iike that, and being in a position where you’re in the spotlight like being a pro player in a video game, the people like that can look crazy because most people don’t have that kind of mentality or drive to be the best at what they do. They just wanna do what they can and go home. Or in the case of video games, they just wanna have fun. People like Hal get slack because we just don’t understand them. I’m personally someone who needs breaks, so I don’t relate to someone like Hal, but I understand why he is how he is.

Not putting friendship has a priority is kinda funny since Hal is the one who left after "they didn't perform" even tho TSM was having a constant amount of victories and dealing with burnout for how many hours they put in the game. One big lost and that was enough. Fine, get your wins, but don't be a hypocrite.

Some people thrive in a toxic workplace.

You want the best out of someone, you work to bring the best out of them and that takes a certain ability in leadership.
Ranting can work, but not all the time.
We are human, folk make mistakes.
I said a long t8me ago that if Hal spoke to me like he did to his team mates, I’d have bea5 the fuck out of him. Hal might well be a phenomenal player, but you can’t win team games solo so you need to bring your team mates on as high a lvl as you can possibly get them too.

I think that this time Verlhust was wrong, at no point did HAL talk shit about him and reps, on the contrary in the videos of his farewell to TSM he wished them the best of luck and indicated that they were great friends, so Verlhust can't talk days later This garbage from his igl and former team leader, there are things that one keeps for his personal circle and discusses it if necessary with them in private, not in the way he published it through this video, leaving Hal bad, I think that it is unmanly to speak with such arrogance in a negative way about someone who made you earn money because he is passionate about what he does and that is why he left, both verlhust and reps were shit in the last LAN and if it had not been For Hal they would not have won these last championships, in fact there are many players like Reps and Verlhust in the professional scene, Hal could easily replace them but he was more of a man and preferred to step aside without harming his teammates. To be honest, TSM won't win a shit from now on because of karma and how Verlhust is handling this situation. now they play verhulst and reps 8 hours a day when with hal they only played the minimum, in life you have to be a man in business and if you were not happy or comfortable, you should have said so, take your things and go to hell, not look resentful and demotivate the one who had made you earn millions....

    Here are my thoughts:
People took what you said way out of proportion (although it's good for clicks so nobody complains lol). What you said wasn't even that bad. You spoke about how you felt, saying that it was hell playing with Hal and that it's the reason why you and Reps got demotivated, but you still gave him his flowers and said he's a grinder, a great player and a winner. You were fair and honest there imo.
I also understand how the incident where you told him you're about to hit him would change things. I understand how you felt that he was taking the in-game toxicity out of the game and bringing it into your real personal lives, with other people around. Philip was being Hal irl, and your reaction is understandable and warranted imo.
I also think the biggest problem is the double standard. Hal can say, do and hurt anyone he wants anytime he wants. He can lynch you publically and your job is to take it, he has the right to do it. But god forbid you give the slightest criticism towards him.
For what it's worth, I think this situation is not uncommon when someone who people aren't used to hearing speak out decides to speak out against someone with clout/power like Hal. A lot of people will instinctively side with the person with more power and shun the quiet party when they decide to finally speak out. People don't like it.
I think Hal is a good person from what I can see, but he has a huge ego and is quite fragile imo. You come off as more confident, more self-assured, even if you may have your own struggles. You just seem more put together, and you're not afraid of speaking what you need to say. So props for that.

I personally think this drama is stupid. You guys chose to keep playing with him despite your personality differences which made the environment toxic and not enjoyable. He made is very clear he wasn't going to change, like he said the passion he is why he is where he is. If you're having conversations weekly with someone about their emotions and how they need to calm down and they still don't it's not on them if you decide to keep playing with them. Especially when they make it clear their emotionality is part of their personality and is not going to change. I understand the reasoning for wanting to keep playing with the best player in the game, but if your personalities don't mesh and you're aware of this but decide to keep playing with them that's on no one but yourself. It's also not on raven to be your therapist although that's the role he took on initially that was probably something that happened unintentionally which is why it didn't remain that way. Raven probably realised hal wasn't going to change and therefore wasn't gonna keep being the voice of reason for literally no reason. I just personally think this video/drama throws a lot of shade on hal when the fact is all of you knew what you were signing up for when you decided to play with him. I understand you wanted to talk about this situation and talk about your side of the drama but the reality is half of this video is just talking about how shit it was to play with hal but yet you decided to keep playing with him which i understand was for a multitude of reasons. I just think it's not fair on hal that you'd basically throw shade on him for no reason. Maybe I've missed some stuff but from what i know hal hasn't thrown shade on any of you other than showing his feelings of disappointment by your guys' performance in the most recent lan. I understand i can't really talk about this considering I'm just a viewer but to randomly come on yt and see a video of you basically talking shit about hal just baffles me maybe I'm crazy

Also i just wanna clarify i know hal isn't a perfect little pony, and has some real emotional and maturity issues that made him a toxic leader, I'm completely aware of this, i also understand how frustrating it must've been to play with him but the fact is like i said everyone in the algs space knows hals toxic passion it's literally part of his brand. Talking about how terrible it was playing with him when you're the one who agreed to play with him just genuinely makes no sense to me. Personally, i think you need to be aware of who you're joining and whether your personalities will mesh well BEFORE you join a team, rather than joining simply for the money then complaining when the environment is toxic like that's not on par for the course of playing with hal, the most well known player in apex.

He does need to mature, he does need to work on his emotions, he does not need to be shit on by his ex teammates for being toxic when it was their choice to play with him in the first place. You can't value money over your enjoyment and then complain when you're not enjoying something. You literally brought it on yourself.

Also i wanna say everything the other guy said is completely correct, and touches on a issue larger than this drama and puts it in an incredibly articulate manner.
