Don't skimp on the quality of your BED (mattress, bed frame).
Invest in PILLOW COVERS instead of buying a zillion different throw pillows. You can quickly switch covers for a new look, mood, or season at a lower cost.
Get quality TOOLS (on sale, if money's tight), especially if you're a DIYer. Say no to dollar store gadgets or any knockoffs.

Don’t skimp on rug size. I realize the 8x10 rugs are quite a bit more than the 5x8, but you’ll never regret spending the extra money. Just trust me on this one.

BEHR is a great paint. My Dad was an interior/ exterior painter for 25 years. He worked alone by word of mouth. He was always trying to keep things as affordable as possible for customers and he tried every paint on the market ( at that time) and he always recommended working with BEHR. I have done quite a bit of painting myself as I worked with him when I wanted money and then… adult life. It’s is IMPORTANT not to buy the cheapest contractor paint! It will cost less per gallon but you will have to do at least one more coat and chances are you will have to cut in multiple times. Get a good enough paint so that you will only have to cut in ONCE! Also on the topic of cutting in, my Dad started rolling first because he found ( and I will now agree from personal experience) that he could get his roller close to the wall and it resulted in less inches of cutting in. Sometimes going down a corner I can just run a brush up and down and it’s done. If I cut in first than I run my brush up and down and usually paint 3-5 inches on other side of my corner. Also, when you think you might have run out, sometimes you can squeeze juuuust enough out of your roller to touch up those few boo boos.

I love museum artwork. I get my favorite pieces on canvas (GreatBigCanvas always has a good sale). I got a John Singer Sargent print, on canvas, about 20x30, for $108. I took it to Michael’s, which always has custom frames for 70% off, sometimes 80%. For under $200, I have a large, beautiful classic piece of art.

There are many ways to dress a window on a budget. Drop cloth, shower curtains and many things can replace curtains/ drapes. Restores and thrift stores are good example of ways to save. Indoor shutters, sheets and tablecloths can be made into curtains. If you buy store bought and they fall short then you can add to them many ways- curtains a section at top or bottom add lace or fabric to make them longer

Re: draperies. I'm so glad I can sew. This is especially true since I live in an old cottage way up in the north woods. Did I mention I'm flat broke? The draperies I made are of suede fabric with an insulated lining. They keep me from freezing during our long, cold winters. But you really do need to get them wide enough to look good. An absolute minimum for heavy fabric is twice the width of your window. If you choose ultra sheers they may look best with four times the width of your windows. Don't skimp! Nothing makes your room look cheap faster than cheap draperies.

Ive been in residential remodeling for 5 years. Home Depot or Lowes paint will require additional coats, especially if you're going from dark to light. but even just changing lighter colors - the money saved on cheaper paint is very quickly lost in installation cost. Since labor costs are usually more expensive than the paint itself - I always recommend a higher quality paint for remodel projects. I have found Benjamin Moore "Regal Select" to be the best product that delivers the highest value. I recommend this product for ALL remodeling wall paint projects. You WILL save time if doing it yourself, or money if hiring out labor. Same goes for ceiling paint. Benjamin Moore is my go to, as opposed to cheaper Home Depot paint products. Same goes for cabinet or trim paints. Benjamin Moore "Advanced" formula is an excellent product. Your Home Depot brand paint products will not work well for remodeling projects. New construction is different. these HD products may be acceptable for new construction - but I highly recommend Benjamin Moore Regal Select for any and all remodeling! of course... this is just my opinion. hope this helps :)

  • @alexmo99

BEHR - 3 or 4 coats. Regal Select - 1 or 2 coats. depends on what resources you have. more time or more money? I would always recommend Regal Select. you'll save lots of time for a little extra money.

  • @gabriellamilgromco

Really great tips on where to spend and where to splurge. The one item I do not agree with is paint. Paint quality does matter. It doesn't mean you need to go for the rolls royce model but hardware store paint is crap. I used to work in a paint store, I know the quality and differences and I decided I didn't want to spend $90 a gallon on repainting my rental apartment. BIG MISTAKE. All the walls had to be skim-coated due to tenant damage so had all been newly primed (white). I was painting white paint over a white primer in a hardware store grade of paint and it took 3-4 coats to achieve a consistent look without streaking and flashing. I ended up spending more $$ on extra gallons of paint, than if I had just bought the good stuff. Lesson learned the hard way.

Thank you for using the word “spending” or “splurging” and NOT “investing”. There seems to be a thing in interior and fashion to call every expensive purchase an “investment” even when you know it will lose value the moment you buy it.

    • @pringlebatch
      @pringlebatch 8 месяцев назад

I definitely see your point! I guess they mean investment in the sense of it "serving you" for a long time and not feeling like a mistake? So a different definition of value
And like you said, not every expensive purchase is worth it!

I just had my apartment painted. I’ve always used Benjamin Moore paints. But this time, I used “ben”, their lowest cost paint ($45/gal), as I’m not going to be living here in ten years, so splurging on their $65/gal paint wasn’t worth it for me. Also, it’s just me. No kids or pets, no wild parties.

Would having skinnier drapes look bad on a window? I have linen-like cream curtains and beige-green blackout drapes that are about 1.5 times the width of the wall, but the room is a bit awkwardly shaped and on one side of the wall the window is very close to the wall, with plenty of wall on the other side of the window, and I feel like the drapes on the left side, even when gathered, take out too much of the window and block out too much light. I've been considering trimming them to be skinnier or removing the drapes altogether and leaving just the sheer cream curtains, even if they cost me a lot of money since they were custom-made. Would that be a design crime? :))

I would actually suggest splurging for rugs…things that you use the most often/touch the most you tend to want to last longer-and for pet owners/parents its just being practical. Besides Ruggable rugs, natural materials are the easiest to clean and won’t matt up or irreversibly stain.

Our curtains are correct in size and we have plenty. But.
My husband absolutely refused to place them correctly so they’re awkwardly hung right over the top of the window and some of them drag onto the floor.
It’s a Victorian house and he wanted to use the holes already in the frame from whoever placed whatever before us and said the wall above isn’t strong enough to place anything on.
But hey. I didn’t want this house and it was a horrible home buying experience. 12 years later and I still resent every penny it into a home I hate.

New tip for art: you can create your own art using an AI tool like DALL-E or Midjourney and then print/frame that. This lets you do custom things like create a Renaissance style portrait that features you and your dog, for example, or an impressionistic rendition of the park down the street.

Excellent video…except one thing: Curtains. If you know the correct height to hang them and the correct length, they should be then you can find good looking curtains from retail stores. True you won’t get the more formal headers, but can get away with rod pockets, grommets, etc.
