Lovely animation and music. This was most likely the last song played by Titanic's courageous band. Harold Bride, the junior wireless operator who was washed off the ship as it sank, said that this was the song played last by the band, and that he distinctly heard the strains of "Autumn." This led some to believe that he was referring to the hymn 'Autumn' but it was most likely 'songe d'automne.' He and other survivors including Archibald Gracie, Jack Thayer and Charles Lightoller (all three remaining on the Titanic as it sank) all recalled that the band played jazzy, upbeat music and the latest hits of the day. Gracie remembered the band playing 'Alexander's Ragtime Band,' and that had they played 'Nearer my God to Thee' he would have found it completely inappropriate and an omen of certain death. Tellingly, the majority of those who said the band played 'Nearer My God to Thee' were on the lifeboats hundreds of yards away. Also, the Titanic band did not play together often in their entirety, and it is argued by hymnologists that 'Nearer My God to Thee' - which is set to varying music across the Atlantic - would have been too difficult to play on the moment. God bless the band, brave to the end.
Contrary to what you think, Songe D'Automne, most likely, was not the last song and perhaps wasn't even played in the later stages of the sinking. I will start with Harold Bride. The claim that he heard the "strains of Autumn" are found in a newspaper where the journalist who interviewed him (Isaac Russell) tweaked his testimony in order to make it more dramatic, and this was not uncommon at the time (read about Yellow Journalism). Adding onto that, Bride never recalled that song outside of this newspaper. Now, regarding Archibald Gracie. He is a notoriously unreliable testimony, having some odd claims (such as staying underwater for the whole final plunge, roughly about 5-7 minutes) and even omitting mentions of a "break-up" when he gathered survivor testimonies for his book. As for the other testimonies, they don’t speak about what was the last song, but only what was generally played that night. Finally, regarding the lifeboats, most of them were less than a mile away from the ship, and thus could still hear the music. Finally, the amount of testimonies saying that "Autumn" was played (2) is massively lower when compared to the amount of those who heard "Nearer, My God, to Thee" (>100). Generally speaking, the evidence leans heavily on "Nearer, My God, to Thee" being the last song played by the band.
Autumn wasnt even in the white star line repertoire. Also 70 people without being influenced by media testifying as nearer my god to thee says something.
@@HugoGHA I agree with this answer. Music carries quite well on water, especially calm water. There was literally no wind, not one bit, and the loudest thing on the boat was the people since it wasn't running. So I think the vibrant strings absolutely would have been discernable, and if the song was known by the listener than I think they'd have been able to pick it out. Many of the lifeboats were really not far away at all.
I teared up while I was looking through the comments of this video. @@monicawitt9368im pretty sure there was more people than that, and taking in account the noise level of a 800ft ship entering its final plunge + 1500 screaming people, its mad to think they could even hear it Plus the leader of the band literally stated he’d play Nearer My God To Thee on a sinking ship, so theres not much wriggle room for Song D’Automne

2:15:44AM Titanic returns to an even keel and her plunge starts. Wallace Hartley leads the band in their final on piece “Songe de Automne”, all 8 band members died in the sinking.
As a musician myself I put myself in their shoes, playing their instruments to the end, then abandoning their instruments and moving to the stern.. truly horrific and sad.
@@aydenstarline8008 eye witness reports say nearer my god to thee was the last song played in it's entirety. however, it was heard that the beginning of songe d'automne was being been played before tapering off to destruction
@@NickShelson well, to be fair, the witnesses for Song D’Autumn were no entirely right. Harold bride claimed that he heard Autumn, an entirely different song that would be impossible to play with the instruments onboard.
(Excerpt from an original story, “SOS MGY: The Tragedy of Anna Lantic”) She felt the deck beneath her feet begin to groan as the band began their final song. The enormous hull of her ship roared its death-knell as heavy steel plates tore like paper, deck planks shredded into toothpicks, heavy ropes parted like thread, a widening chasm threatened to swallow her whole. The force of the breakup threw her grip from the bulwark, she fell down, down, down, down to the water, snapped wires throwing sparks and shards of glass twinkling around her. The song played on, her funeral hymn played on as she fell beside the crevasse. All went dark for the final time as she hit the water.
It seems more likely that this would have been the last song played at 2:10am, due to the sad nature of nearer, my god, to thee. Still it pains me to imagine these magnificent halls, this masterpiece of engineering, finally giving in to the might of the ocean. Truly an unworthy end for such a beautiful ship.
I think Nearer my god to thee was played at 2:10 and finished at 2:13 and then right when the plunge starts they played songe de automne as their final piece. This can be backed up by Harold Bride, Henry Wilde and Archibald Gracie which bride claimed he heard autumn during the plunge and Wilde and Gracie heard a waltz
@@DannyDraws1912 that does sound like the most probable explanation, though I can’t help but wonder what must have been going through their heads, still playing while watching the bridge and bulwark rail become awash. @@markusmiklauschina6710 we don’t know for sure where they were but there is a lot of accounts of them on the starboard side entrance which is where I think they played and it would make sense due to the fact three wouldn’t know it was sinking fast till the even keel
The fact that the ship sank in such a unique way: flooded so violently by the bow shoals, in order to tilt to the point of raising the stern above the waterline and then break apart due to logical physical forces , falling suddenly into the sea, this while the bow sank, pulling the stern by what was left of the union between the two, to then tilt the stern again until it became vertical and then both halves completely sink vertically and then separate in their trip to the bottom of the ocean.. I would say that apart from what is already so terrifyingly tragic, it is the most humiliating way in which a ship has been wrecked. It is as if Poseidon himself, enraged, had seized it with his hands to break it in half before taking it to his home in the depths of the ocean. Something very surreal.
Watched the Cameron movie but muted it during the last performance by the band and played this song instead. It was so much more moving and fitting. It synced up almost perfectly, a surreal experience.
Incredible graphics and beautiful music. Thank you. I worked in the hotel business for 40+ years, and have often walked through hotel corridors and public areas when they were closed, empty, with no one else around. It is an eerie feeling when you consider the energy and people that had inhabited the space before. (Stephen King's "The Shining" novel expresses the feeling exactly, turning it into horror.) The realism of the CGI gave me the same feeling, as if I was walking the decks--alone on the boat.
