    Thanks heaps. Love your video. Just realised it was a year ago. I’ve just cut my seed pods from plants I bought in winter at the garden centre . They seemed to thrive outside better than in but because we’re going into summer I’ve brought them in to shelter from the heat. I’m in NZ. So is it ok to plant some new ones now (can’t wait to get started) or wait until autumn?

      Hi Liz Barry, you can start off cyclamen seeds at anytime of year, I just find they tend to germinate more readily in autumn/winter. Maybe try some seeds now and a few more in autumn, see which works best for you. Propagation is one long experiment!! All the best of luck Robbie 🌻

    Hello I so enjoy your videos. I bought some seeds on internet but did not realize they were coming from china at that time so who knows. I generally only buy from the US cuz I live here. I’ll just consider this another unknown adventure but I will do the soaking sessions as you advise and hope I got the right seeds. Thanks for your entertaining and educating vids. Hi me again! I started with about 50 seeds and have about 30 individual sprouts already! Would have not been nearly as successful if not for your videos. More to come for sure. But I do have a question how some of the sprouts have exposed their bulb.
    I dont know if the plant is trying to push it above the soil line, or if me watering it has eroded the surrounding soil exposing the bulb. Should I leave them be, or add more soil to cover the bulb? See a couple pictures of the 3 sprouts showing their bulbs: imgur.com/gallery/tzoWKmW

    • @stinkyditchnursery750
      @stinkyditchnursery750  5 лет назад +1

      Muphyn Man nice babies! Cyclamen do have a tendency to push their corms up, some species more than others. I’d cover them up with a bit more compost to prevent drying or cover half with just gritty sand, propagation is all about small experiments to hone your technique. The weather is warming up now so don’t get disappointed if the leaves start to yellow and die, it’s natural. Some do keep their leaves when so small if kept cool but most retreat to the ground to reappear at the end of summer. Keep the pots quite dry in a cool place, this is next part of growing where only experience can be the teacher, not too wet, not too dry. Hope this helps Robbie 🌻

    How much do you water the seeds ???? It is not referred on this part of your videos or part 3.... Something is missing for us to do it properly.

    • @stinkyditchnursery750
      @stinkyditchnursery750  4 года назад

      Estellmaria it’s difficult to say how much, it depends on how wet the soil is already. Cyclamen come from around the Mediterranean Sea so have evolved with hot summers and a bit of rain over the winter. They all die back in the summer so if planting out then water occasionally. During the growing season they will be drinking far more. It’s really tricky to say how much and when as it depends so much on the individual plant. As a rule water once planted out and only water again when they are drying. Once a few leaves have grown they tell you quite clearly when they are thirsty. Watering correctly is something hard to teach, it’s learnt from doing it really. Always remember they come from hot countries with occasional rain, mimic the natural environment and you can’t go far wrong. I hope this helps, Robbie 🌻

Gonna start doing a few posts on ecology, my real passion, begging people to start appreciating the wild flowers (weeds) that pop up in their gardens and not to use pesticides to destroy all that we don’t like. Nature has this beautiful, terrifically complex rhythm that everything dances to and has done so for millennia. Do we really want to be responsible for turning off the music and stopping the party? Hello! Um... I did exactly what you said on the video. Two weeks passed and I checked my seeds today. The seeds got a little bigger but they didn't sprout yet. I don't know if it has to do that I put them on a tissue paper!! Now I put them on a cotton which is softer. But, will they sprout? Can I put them in the soil although they didn't sprout yet, or is it wrong and I have to leave them a little bit longer on the cotton and wait??!!

    • @stinkyditchnursery750
      @stinkyditchnursery750  2 года назад +1

      Hi The Dark Countess, worry not, all is good. Cyclamen seeds can sometimes take a few weeks to sprout, sometimes a few months. So long as they are a bit damp and in a dark place with a constant temperature they will sprout in the end. Just check them every couple of weeks and your patience will be rewarded in the end. It’s a waiting game at this stage, I have some seeds that have been in for 6 weeks and they are only just starting to sprout now. I’m afraid cyclamen can’t be hurried, they will start growing eventually but only when they are good and ready. I hope this helps, it’s nothing that you have done wrong, all the best Robbie 🐱

They experience time in a different way to us, I know this may sound a bit ‘out there’ but with all things that grow I try to understand how they ‘see’ the world. Once you can do this patience is not required, it’s about excepting nature for what it is. Sorry to get a bit deep about something so simple as a seed!! All the very best of luck Robbie 🌻

      Muphyn Man The soil based compost is John Innes No 2, it sounds like a brand but it’s actually a recipe! Google the history of it, fascinating stuff. You can get bags of it at most garden centres. With the germination of seeds in the bag, usually a couple of weeks or so, depends on too many factors to really predict accurately. Best thing to do is check after a couple of weeks and then weekly after that, may take months!! Hope this helps Robbie 🌻🌻🌈

      Jeevan Khadka sorry for the late reply, they can take a few weeks for leaves to start appearing, as with everything to do with cyclamen growing patience is key. Never give up on them, I’ve had some take a couple of months to start pushing up leaves. At the start of summer the small leaves may go yellow and die back, don’t worry, this is natural. Some small plants will stay evergreen over the summer to make you think the others have perished. I pot them on in summer whilst dormant. Hope this helps and best of luck Robbie

      Hi Balckbettystack, I have discovered that they don’t have airing cupboards in the USA either! The main thing you are looking for is to keep a relatively constant temperature. So in the back of a kitchen cupboard, under the stairs cupboard, anywhere the temperature doesn’t fluctuate too much. In the wild they tend to grow under trees where the tree keeps the temperature steady during late summer when they germinate. I hope this helps, all the best of luck Robbie 🌻

      eleni tepetidou I wet the compost before putting in the sprouts if it needs it. Your compost must be moist but not wet. After planting only water when the surface has dried out, this may happen every few days depending upon how hot and humid the weather is. When dormant in the summer only water a little to prevent them from rotting. Once they start growing again towards the end of summer give them a good soak and again wait for the surface to dry before watering again. I hope this helps, all the best Robbie 🌻

      rightgirlwrongplanet the label on the bag is wrong, I don’t know what happened!! June/ July is the best time to start them off, fresh seed are always better. Is your cyclamen an indoor house plant? If so it may need a little help to pollinate due to the lack of insects indoors. Take a small paint brush and give each flower a little brush inside, going from flower to flower. If you have an indoor variety the seed pod stems will not curl, they just arch over. The pods should be ripe and split mid summer and this is the best time to get them to germinate, they do take a few years of growing before they flower but well worth the wait, I hope this helps, just message if you have any questions, all the best Robbie 🌻

      @@stinkyditchnursery750 Hey Robbie, thank you so much for writing back! I've watched your cyclamen videos over and over again so I'm like your biggest fan.
      My cyclamen was shop bought and I assumed for outdoor planting so that's where they ended up. I checked the label and it just says "cyclamen" and no further detail so I can't confirm the variety which would have been useful information to send you. They look a bit like pointed leaves from 1:14 in your video ruclips.net/video/_d-XAbATznA/видео.html but I could be confused and they might also be 1:59.
      They were bought Nov 2019 and they hardly grew or expanded since (Mar 2020). They stayed the same bloom and leaves. Winter looked a bit sparse which was disappointing.
      I checked them this weekend and they don't have those spirally tendrills which you used to harvest seeds. At the moment, they're still in flower. There was one flower whose petals had begun to wither and a ball had started to appear at the base of where the petal used to be. I'm guessing this is where the seeds will grow?
      In a separate attempt, I bought seeds online (May 2019) and absolutely none of them germinated despite following the instructions exactly, so I'm determined to do it from my own fresh seeds.
      I really hope I'm successful this year because buying the plants again would be less cost effective.
