Santa came early this year. This lens is everything that I could have wished for. People focus too much on the depth of field, but for me it is the light gathering ability of 1.7 in a zoom that is really useful, and paired with the 10-25 is ideal. Thank you Santa.
It’s to expensive for me but I think this combo needs a 50-100 maybe 50-150 that’s the next step for Panasonic for a nice trio and maybe a 2x converter for this lenses.
As the owner of the Panasonic Leica 10-25mm f1.7 which remains on my Olympus EM1 Mk3 90% of the time, I can only imagine how superb the build and quality of the 25-50mm f1.7 is (which I can't afford after getting the 10-25mm for an arm and a leg!). Even as an Olympus camera owner, I'd say Panasonic definitely hit out of the park with both lenses - truly excellent lenses. Thanks for the wonderful review as usual, Richard.
Hi Jin. I currently have the 10-25mm & a GX9, but am thinking to upgrade to the EM1 III. Does Starry AF work with this combination? Any other thoughts or issues you have noticed? Cheers.
@@MrSpeednz Hey Julian, I personally don't use starry AF, but I know for a fact that I could certainly turn on the EM1 III's Starry AF feature with the Panasonic 10-25 lens. I have not noticed any issues at all so far, and truly, the 10-25mm lens is now literally 100% on my EM1 III. It's just such a powerful lens and can do so much, and really did replace a whole bunch of my primes. The only thing you need to realise is the manual Aperture ring on the Panasonic does not work with the EM1 III (but you can easily change Aperture using the dial controls, etc. so I have zero issues there).
Hi there - which lens are you using to film this video (your indoor shot)? I love the look of the 25mm-50mm look but I’m afraid that it may be too close for talking to the camera or my music video covers… Thanks!
This is the first video that has actually given me a reason to consider this lens. I had been considering both the Lumix-Leica 25mm and 42.5mm lenses, and this could replace both with only 30g added weight in the bag. Of course, I was also considering the Sigma 56mm as a possible 42.5mm replacement, and that changes the dynamics. Will give it more thought.
Is there a date on the gh6? These lenses seem pretty nice but don't intrigue me very much lol I'm sure they would be great to use. I just recently got the olympus 12-40. Lot of fun to use
@@TheRealRichardWong I check for that gh6 everyday lol. Your videos are amazingly helpful. Looking forward to your review lol, the ibis comparisons are especially great.
The 10-25 feels great on a gx8 on paper it’s big and heavy but in real it’s a nice lens feels great on a bigger body the gx8 is the smallest one. I think
I actually don’t mind the look of the sun stars, especially at f16, in my opinion. I can see myself using this 25-50mm while recording video or stills, for example, at a concert. The lens’ added reach over the 10-25mm would be a benefit when further back from the stage. And the bright 1.7 aperture would be great in low light too. Excellent review, Richard!
Hey Brian, yeah i guess sunstars really is quite subjective! Thanks for watching. Yes i think this lens is almost like a must buy for people who shoots with the 10-25 f/1.7.
Hi Richard. Can't believe I only discovered your channel now! Great review as well the one on 10-25. Hope if you don't mind me asking that eternal question of what to get. Welcome advise from other posters too. I am mainly a stills shooter using a GH5 (didn't know they were going to release the G9) and my first panny leica lens was the 25mm f1.4 on a GH3. Always loved it, more than the 17.5mm f1.7 which was my other. But the Nocticron definitely moved things up a notch and I was hoping Panasonic would release an update, bigger diameter 25mm prime. Alas they released 2 zoom lenses with the 25mm at either ends. Which one has better picture quality at 25mm? I already have a nocticron and the standard 12-60mm. I suppose at first glance would be the HX1025 but which gives the best picture at 25mm?
Hi there!! Welcome to my channel! For the image quality, i would suggest you check my image quality test results in the video and decide it yourself :) but if you are deciding between the 10-25 and 25-50, i would really just look at what focal length is more suitable. I think that would make a much bigger difference in real life than the minor difference in terms of image quality at 25mm as they are both really good lenses anyway.
@@TheRealRichardWong Hi Richard, thank you for your prompt reply! Your advice is most helpful and appreciated. I will probably get the HX1025 based on what you said. All best and look forward to your upcoming videos!
hmm i watched their review (very nice review as usual).. but wondering why they have such different result to me. I did a few tests and they all appear to be parfocal :/
@@TheRealRichardWong they did mention that in general, they find a lot of sample variation in parfocal tests so often don't bother testing for it. Maybe this is another case of it
Yes it could be. But there seems to some huge difference between their copy and mine. They test footage showed some big focus shift while all my test show virtually no focus shift
Is the 25-50 zoom or 10-25 a good color "look" match to the 42.5 nokticon or really require a lot of fine tuning? I ask not because I am an expert, but because I am not. The 42.5 is so good that I hardly have to do anything.
Hii Harry, i can't say if the two zooms would match the 42.5 Nokticon. But i know Panasonic spent a lot of effort to match the look of 25-50 with 10-25
Better that the nocticron? Hell no! Though I use both the 10-25 and 42.5 nocticron for 2 cam interviews and at times I could have done with zooming out a touch for better framing. Our next project is a drama series and due to the guerrilla style it will be shot in, the 25-50 makes perfect sense paired with the 10-25 and bgh1.
10-25 is more unique. I know they want to make both lens equal in size and weight. But I personally would like they make it longer to 65/70mm and around 800 gram is a good trade.
As a G9 user I will only bite if Pana releases more substantial info on GH6. On that note: The secrecy around new releases (exact specs and timelines) is counterproductive. If I already knew GH6 would be released (month) with the rumoured specs (1.2.3.) I could already make a buying decision, secure budgets and I might also already make a buying decision for this lense - as well as 10-25mm. Withouth this info I might decide for another camera (Sony a7IV) - and then certainly not buy more lenses for this system. I might not be the only one sitting on the fence?!
Similar dilemma here. Wondering if I should plant my flag outside of the Panasonic MFT ecosystem and go else where but don’t wanna miss out on a potential game changer that I’m already invested in.
Seems to me, the only downside is no stabilization. This wouldn't be a problem with a body that has IS. How does lack of stabilization effect handheld shooting on non stabilized bodies?
@@przybylskipawel if you look at the top right of the screen at 19:29 it says MF, which indicates the camera is in Manual Focus mode If you are refering to the "[AF]" at bottom right, that is just the UI for you to trigger a one one autofocus if you want to.

This review helped very much. I decided to get the Leica 25-50mm f/1.7, thanks for sharing Richard!!
is this Leica 25-50mm f/1.7 a lens you want to add to your camera bag?
For photos it should be almost same as g9 apart from lack of animal autofocus. For video, g9 (shown in this video) would be slightly better
It’s to expensive for me but I think this combo needs a 50-100 maybe 50-150 that’s the next step for Panasonic for a nice trio and maybe a 2x converter for this lenses.
50-100 maybe possible but 50-150 f/1.7 might be too much esp if they want to keep the size similar or same
The LUMIX 35-100mm is stellar, and lightweight and one of my favorite lenses. I think this one is aimed at videographers.
@@TheRealRichardWong a 50-100 1.7 to me would be a much desired lense for concert filming/ fotography
Thanks for a great review.
It would be great to see a side by side comparison between this and the 2 2.8 zooms
Thanks for the suggestion Colin! I will see if I have chance to test that !
On the GH5M2 you can set the aperture ring to 1/3 increments or smooth. So that feature is available in the new bodies
