I remember a Katrina story from a 911 operator. A woman was trapped in her attic with the water still rising. She couldn't get out. The operator was telling her to find something heavy and break through the wood, but the woman wasn't able to do so. She listened as the woman grew more and more panicked, unable to do anything more to help her, listening to her gasp and scream, until the phone finally cut out, presumably because it was underwater. She'll never know for sure what happened. She said she hoped a boat showed up at the last minute and got her out. But I don't think that's very likely. I read another story about a couple who were asleep when the floodwaters came rushing through and their house collapsed. They were both trapped in the debris with the water rising. He was still next to his wife as the water rose high enough to drown her before beginning to recede. He survived and was rescued. He told the story with no emotion at all. They were trapped. The water rose. She drowned. He didn't. That's all. Every so often I think of the panic and horror those poor people experienced. The dread of knowing what was happening to you and being utterly helpless to change it. Watching your beloved struggle as the water slowly covers her face. Seeing her eyes so wide and afraid, and then seeing them empty.
Thank you Swamp Dweller!!! I was born mostly grew up in Louisiana! I remember my Grandmother would sit out on the porch at night with me and my brothers and sisters. She would tell us some creepy stories that happened to her and her family. Did l mention that we lived on the bayou?

But you can't just up and leave home as the news reporters say. It'll take a couple days to get back home after cutting trees out of roads and no power the looters make their way out trying to steal! So you have to stay up nights watching out for you and neighbors and days trying to drive and check on the elderly of the community getting them ice water and MRE or maybe a lucky break get a nice hot meal. It's our home though.
Wow. These stories really hit different. I just traveled to New Orleans for the first time last month for a Land Conservation Conference. I am about to get my degree in Sociology. We specifically discussed what the last story had touched on. And how so many years later, you can still see the damage from Katrina. Louisiana has many more oil pipelines than most states also, perhaps the most. Many people living there feel the government sacrificed their state.
The 4th story wins the prize. In a moment, when there is no government Rescuing you & your family & then, individuals, that have no remorse of robbing other people's supplies is despicable. For them, to be this despicable individuals to make mean & crude insults, then take money & food, & leave those new victims in their houses to dwindle away by the hours is pure, heartless Evil. By the way,how many of you, would be able to fearlessly walk through gross water & what if there was loose alligator. He would be done in alligator death roll, drowned. How would she be able to manage kid & get there, when getting down from the lounger floating on water is hard for 1 person to do.when it would be all over the place.& you don't want your kid to flip off of & into dirty water.
