- Join us for a dynamic duo of tasks as Robin and Clare dive headfirst into a weekend filled with garden guardianship and DIY dilemmas. With the garden in need of protection, they spend two days meticulously cutting down branches and crafting a dead hedge to shield their crops from harm. But with this task completed, they face the daunting prospect of chopping up dozens of trees for firewood in the coming week.
As bodies ache from the arduous tree surgery, Clare embarks on a secret project, adding an element of intrigue to our farmhouse renovation journey. Meanwhile, Robin takes on the challenge of budget DIY kitchen cabinets, armed with cabinet carcasses from BandQ. But navigating the labyrinth of flatpack assembly instructions proves to be a test of patience, as Robin wades through reams of chaos to decipher the construction process.
Join us as we navigate the highs and lows of homestead life, finding beauty in the simplicity of hard work and the satisfaction of DIY accomplishments.

Looking good Rob! The stack of materials and boxes continues to shrink which must help free up head space as well as physical space!
Absolutely, its amazing how the place looks better and better the more material we use up, i.e. the yard is looking great!
Great work getting the kitchen units started , can’t wait to see it finished , do what ever job you need to to break up the monotonous work of putting units together 😊
Thanks April, yes lenty of monotony at times🙄 Thank you for your comment 😊
Absolutely LOVE your new cooker! Exactly the kind I want for my kitchen!
Thank you Aisling, one day we will be able to use it I hope, instead of it just looking good 😄
@@WestCorkWander the kitchen is also really shaping up great! Super impressed with the cabinets so far!
With each unit you're putting up, strangely, the room looks bigger and more kitcheny. Fabulous!
Thank you! 😊
Ahh bless you guys. Rob looked worn out. I remember when we had 3 trees down in the storm and just clearing 3 nearly saw Sam off. It's hard graft when you're only using what few tools you have at your disposal. The kitchen will look fab. Can't wait to see it. We used to rent a house from my mum's cousin's son, if that makes sense, in Myrtleville. I loved it there. Think that sparked my love of Ireland. ❤
Yes the old Lidl Parkside chainsaw has been put through it's paces, but you know what it's doing ok except for Rob having to mend the pull cord a few times🙈 Slowly slowly with the kitchen, i guess if you had someone put one in they would have it done in a day, but when its just the two of us, it takes time, time is so precious as you know 🙂
Kitchen is really starting to come together! Loving it! Not giving an opinion on what you should do or how to do it. You’re doing pretty ok without us ….. just happy to watch the transformation!
Thanks so much! 😊
Nice cabinet build.👏
Coming along slowly 👋
Amazing job Rob .Your very talented .Loving when Claire pops on camera
Rob absolutely loves a challenge, the more challenging the better! If there's a problem he won't leave it till it's solved, so yes he is very talented and I'm very lucky 😊
I'm a 45yr joiner and even i have a set of the centre of hinge bits, there a great addition to any carpenters tool kit 😊😊😊😊😊
Oh John you could be a wealth of knowledge. We don't know what style of doors for the kitchen, but very simple, with no handle or maybe a hole as a handle.
I'd really recommend using a Blumm hinge bit to drill your door hinge holes, so much easier!.
Oops just saw you have a jig and bit and all :)
Thanks for commenting, yes Robs looking forward to having a go at making the kitchen doors 😊
You know, you guys have become one of my favorite channels ❤️ great job, much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖
Wow, thank you! We feel quite overwhelmed with this comment. Thank you so much for your support ❤️
what an excellent job you have done - bet you are enjoying your new cupboards after living in a camp
Cupboards I didn't really miss, but oh my am I looking forward to having a sink 😊
Was the secret project that you got your bees?🐝 Clare looked like she was in a bee suit!! Kitchen looks awesome! Are you going to tile all behind the stove? Always good to see you guys!😊💚
Yes we will tile behind the stove and below the window. Oh all will be revealed next week on my secret project 😉😉
Great work guys. Keep the shoulder to the wheel
💪💪🙂
Looking fantastic Rob, I think Claire is plastering the ceiling 😊
Thanks Deborah, ahh you will have to wait till next week for my big secret 😉
The kitchen - wow! Not too shabby at all. Pauline
Thanks Pauline, yes it's a great start ☺️
Drive on!
Thank you so much 😊
Lovely looking cabinets and yes I think you should do the fridge side the same as the other side awesome work keep it up guys☘️☘️☘️👍
We will, as we go we slowly work these things out, but great to hear your views too ☺️
Great job Rob Kitchen looks great
Thank you so much, we are delighted with how it's coming together😊
Kitchen cabinets looking good there
Thanks 👍
congratulations on the kitchen! Well done! It's already looking good. It's so much fun to see you move forward and succeed ;-)
Thanks so much, we can't quite believe the progress! 😊
That spider was massive!! 🫣
Used to hate them, but now I see the positive factor of fly catching which can be handy on a building site 🙂
Kitchen looking great Rob as for what Clare is doing when I seen her Walter White came to mind 😂
Haha yes I get all the good jobs🙄 Next weeks vid 😉
Great video and amazing.
progress 🎉🎉🎉🎉b
Thank you!!😊
I would of put the angle bracket on top of the tall cupboards that way there hidden 😊
Thank you for the comment, I think Rob is planning this 🙂
Can I suggest, if you hand 1/2 inch space behind the unit, use a 1x 3 across the back to hold the sides together. I’ve had similar cabinets and after a lot of use the hardware gets loose.
Thank you so much for your tip! 😁
Love the channel, folks......
Thank you for watching ! 😊
Mud and tape before you do any more cabinets or they will get in the way and get very dusty with all the sanding!!! Coming on thi!!
Yes we are thinking of giving that a go today before we do anymore 👍
Nice job!
Thanks!😊
😂😂😂 yep, get the reference!
🤣🤣👌
Hi there, good progress. Can I just say it might be better to use the Leylandii chippings for paths etc and possibly around the trees. I think you may have probs using them to earth up around the veg and potatoes as they may be too acidic. If you have loads the compost them with manure and use next year. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the tips! Yes we are chipping like mad. Paths I think are a great idea. I have used alot over my first and second earlies as recommended by someone here so 🤞
I see a wonderful bon 🔥
Thank you for watching 😊
My guess is Clare is polishing or grinding of something else on the concrete floor?
Really impressed with the kitchen Rob. You both are so impressive for not doing this for a living ✌️💚
Maybe not if it’s really dusty 🤔
Shhhhhhhhhsssh spot on ;)
With the cardboard boxes, you'll now have alot of cardboard for the no-dig planter beds ❤
That's the plan! ☺️
Your fridge looks like it sticks out 5 or 6 in. into the narrow entry into the kitchen. I might've put it down where the pantry cabinets are. Not sure where the entry is when bringing in groceries. Which entered into your decisions.
Yeah we were in a dilemma on this as that was the original location, we put it here in the end as the kids go to it all the time so it's more convenient here. It actually doesn't stick out that far and it may look less when I put the doors on 👍
OOOOMGGGGG YOU HAVE DONE AMAZING ,YEAHH CARRY ON WITH THE KITCHEN PROJECT GTE THAT DONE B4 ANOTHER ROOM , AND U CAN GO SIT IN A FINISHED ROOM ALL TOGETHER
yEAH I watch the wild homestead ,hes amazing too ,doing well on his build on his own ,also claire Cant wait see ur secret project ,rolll on wednesdayyxxxx
Thank you so much for your big comment. The kitchen finally coming through from an old farm shed just gives us huge motivation. Yes you are right, to finish this would mean a great all rounder room for us all to enjoy.
@@WestCorkWander But you are are so amazing ,the amount of wrk you have put into ur build i bloody love it ,excuse my swearin ,so glad ur video was on today to watch ,yes clare ty to u 2, ohh the wild homestaed is cool isnt he xx also i watch the irish homestead then 2 are great , sam n rebecca n toby the donkey ,ur kitchen is lookin fab xx
You will have to leave your leylandi fire wood a few years to dry not the best of wood to use as fire wood 🤗
That's the plan! 🙂
How are you going to tape and joint, your ceiling with your cabinets in the way? One job at a time.
Yes taping and mudding is next. We have not decided yet, but we may have a piece of wood matching the doors at the top of the cabinets, if not yes you are right it will be tricky, but we will have to see. Thanks for your concern 🙂
Will you have to remove the kitchen cabinets later, to be able to plaster and seal the whole room?
The wall behind the cabinets is sealed with insulation, vapour barrier and thick OSB chosen so that we could mount the cabinets to it. They will not be coming back out. We do need to tile around them though. Thanks for watching 🙂
Drive on, I thought Clare might be taking the render off but there would be a lot of dust so maybe plastering your or the kids bedroom?
Next week 😉😉 Thanks for commenting 😊
Job well done but do you ever notice ppl who come up with the idea of kitchen counters make them so low so when your using the counter there short or maybe it's me because I'm tall lol. Kinda like vent hoods over stoves short again ughhh. Have a great weekend ppls🙂
Thank you for your comment. Yes we will definitely make the counter top as high as we can. We were a little disappointed with the fact the cooker can not be any higher than 93cm and of course we want it to be level with the counter. 🤞it will be ok.
Hi guys, glad ur doing so well.
I left Ireland 10 yrs ago,my daughter was born in Cork, anyway seriously thinking of moving back,I want to come home but nervous, any tips as iv been gone a while,is it still easy to open a bank account,I have my prsi number still and were to move to,we cant afford cork,I was thinking co.galway area...
I think make a visit back and ear mark a few places that you would like check out to live. Cork is expensive but you can still find the odd bargain. Where are you living currently ?
I could fill a skip with all the bits that I have left over from fitting kitchens 😂😂😂😂😂😂
They do add up all right!
What style of door are you guys having
Stained birch ply, nice and simple
Cookers are not normally put in with a window above for safety reasons. So wondered what your thoughts were. 🤨
Thanks for your concern here. As this range will not be oil or solid fuel operated we are actually ok to have it here, we did check with the supplier.
@@WestCorkWanderI’m more worried about grease and food splatter on the window. Maybe it’s easy to clean🤔
Also Rob tells me usually stoves especially gas shouldn't be in front of opening windows but as ours doesn't open it's compliant.
As for splatter, yeah that could be a pain to clean, it is small and recessed... However rob (who does most cooking) hates frying anything indoors so be BBQ's 365 days a year, even does Xmas turkey on bbq!! So only ever be boiling and oven cooking so hopefully no splatter at all.
@@WestCorkWander perfect! I hate frying and avoid it at all costs 👍
Why put your cooker under a window is it not health and safety and it also looks strange
Issues only surround gas or solid fuel stoves and windows that open. It is different but way better than cooking at a stove and staring at a wall.
I didn't think of it that way but it's probably a good idea
