An Oklahoma 6-year-old, the youngest person to ever compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, was sent home in tears after failing to qualify for the final round, despite spelling all of her words correctly. Edith Fuller aced words like "nyctinasty" and "tapas" during an event in National Harbor, Md., recently. However, she will not compete in the finals after being disqualified from the national challenge. The kindergartner did not get a high enough score on the required written exam. #InsideEdition

It's not excessive it's necessary. If they didn't get most of the spellers out in the test, then there would be way too many for the final round which has around 10 people.
They never had the vocabulary part when I went to school, they added that a couple of years ago.

The national spelling bee recently added an essay, the essay would be scored and if people didn't score high enough, they wouldn't make it to the final round. They take the test before the spelling bee. Edith didn't get a high enough score.
