Thank you. This information is gold for new gardeners and appreciated by those who need reminders. Wish I could give you a bunch of thumbs up for this one. Appreciate you! 🌻
I read through your book from cover to cover in three days. Each night I would read and re-read a chapter or two. It's not only informative but it's an entertaining read. Coming from an author of two books, I know a good read when I see it. Great work Bryan.
Western Washington, Zone 8b I think, and it took a ridiculously long time for things to get going this year. I want to do a fall garden, but I may have to skip it this year because so much stuff is still in the ground nowhere near ready to harvest. I have some small stuff I'm starting indoors just in case. Thank you for that point about some things being okay to cover, since what we eat doesn't need to be pollinated to get going. I hadn't ever thought of that. Our big plant pests here have been aphids and slugs. And rhe neighbors ever-growing horde of semi-feral cats...
I have to tell you, I followed your sweet potato tutorial step-by-step and they have done so well! I also recently followed your basil propagation steps and they are doing so well. Thank you.
Zone 9A/9B Florida. I'm trying my first fall garden. Tomatoes, purple sweet potatoes, corn, peppers, herbs, green beans. Hoping to add my spaghetti and butternut squash and maybe lettuce or spinach this week. It's a learning experience for sure!
I'm in 9a(North Florida) and I'm trying fall tomatoes for the first time this year. Really looking forward to it because with the heat starting so early in the summer my summer tomatoes always struggle.
Gotta say I have noticed a significant difference between before camera crew Brian and post camera crew. I miss the feel of you casually talking to me but this new format is much more refine and finesse. Good job!
Oh my gosh. I have been ripping out powdery mildew laden squash plants all day. Currently relaxing with a cold adult beverage and planning out my fall garden. Taking notes and dreaming of cooler weather!! Thank you for your always informative videos!
Hey Brian, You can plant Yod Fah close together, about 4-5 inches apart is good. I just planted mine, 4 inches apart. They thrive in cooler weather, and do well down to 20F, maybe colder. My last crop weren't even phased by hard freezes. I'm planting Chinese Hilton cabbage, which can be planted one per square foot. It grows up more than out. I purchase seeds a season in advance. If you wait, you are apt to find what you want is sold out.
So ready for fall here in central Florida! I still have to go through all my seed and see what I need to order! I am behind ! Always! Happy planning and planting!
When I googled what to plant with fennel there was a lot of information about what you should and shouldn't plant with fennel. I didn't plant anything in the same bed as the fennel, so I can't say who or what was correct. I would just recommend that gardeners do the research on what is and isn't a good companion with fennel before they plant it. Great video as usual. Happy Gardening 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Per your advice I already have cucumbers, summer squash, and basil coming up and doing great for late summer. Will also be trying Cylindra beets for the first time. If you haven't already tried a juice mix of carrot, beet, and apple, please do. It's my fave and think you'll also love it! Thanks again for all the useful advice!
This years summer garden has been plagued by very hot days and no rain. I’ve been putting off Installing a drip system but this has spurred me to get it done for next season. Hopefully I can get some favorable weather to put fall crops in soon!!
I’m starting my carrots, romaine and snow peas in containers today. I have two greenhouses because my fall garden will need extra time. My brassicas are about 6” tall now and will go into grow bags and finish out in the greenhouse. I also have about 60 potatoes in grow bags and will plant another 60 that will all be in the greenhouse.
I am ready for cooler weather too! 85% with top humidity here! I am trying to figure out where to plant because we moved and had no time to do anything but I want to put th e cardboard down and wood chips at least for right now! Ugh, we have so much to do and not enough time, people or energy. Thank you for sharing Brian! 🤗🤗🤗
Thank you Bryan. I’ve never tried a fall garden but I will this year. Since I’m in zone 9, Houston, I’ve been worried about even putting seeds i. The grown because of the intense heat we’ve been having. Hopefully after this week the 100 degree weather is over. I want to try potatoes, but I’ll have to do them in five gallon buckets. I’m going to go watch your video again on that. I tried before and it didn’t go well. Thank you for all your help and hints.🌻
YES to the cooler weather, less pests 😩 our “real feel” temp with be triple digits today. Praying this is the last one of the season! I gotta get more crops in the garden lolol
Love Garlic , onions. and Potatoes, just harvested some potatoes , got some huge, medium and small, was a little disappointed that they where mixed sizes and not all huge, even though it was all in one bed and one variety. We had a wet summer in Sydney Australia ,the soils are still very moist at present even though we haven’t had rain for weeks, just a small sprinkle. In the unused beds I have had grass growing on top over summer, it keeps the structure of the soil, plenty of garden worms too, if leaving the ground bare or lightly mulched over summer the soil goes dusty and looses the soil biology when uncovered, I could use a cover crop, but choose to grow buffalo grasses to transplant in the yard.😀🇦🇺
I am very discouraged since my first attempt was scorched by the sun and died this Summer. We just got 8+ inches of rain last night. The tank is full and the birds are back. I always like your videos. I am planning what to plant next. Just got a bunch of leaves and sticks from the run off from last night. So digging for some fresh browns to put into compost. Getting motivated to try again.
Amazing video :) Truly is soothing, relaxing, and educating. I have learnt a lot from giving this a chance, and I am so glad. Thank you so much for taking the time to create this video with us, :) It really is special and inspiring to get into my own gardening as a way to battle and get better at handling the stressful life I got myself into. Finding the way to the roots of ourselves. Thank you again and wishing you the best :)
Brian! You did NOT tell us tomato horn worms were the size of a small car! Haha. Had my first two today and almost needed a crane to pull them off. I'm kidding, but thought I'd share my surprise.
Great video. I will be following along as I try a fall garden. I’m in 10a in SD, so I think I can copy you but in a much smaller scale. Can’t wait to hear about seed starting. I’ve had good and bad outcomes. The smaller seeds not so good.
Sorry! I accidentally hit the thumbs down button!!🙄I immediately changed it. I was most definitely trying to hit the thumbs up! Thanks for the fall planting inspiration!
I'm glad you put in that "almost" caveat at the beginning about spacing. I too, am guilty of, not so much spacing too close initially, but after the fact when I think, I can tuck this or that in that open space. And then the this or that disappears under the first planting. Also, do you recommend mustard as a trap crop for fall brassicas or just spring/summer?
It’s 104 degrees in my backyard with the garden. I last about 30 minutes when it is that hot. So I garden early morning, late afternoon. I still have the shade cloth over the garden. 🥵🥵🥵
My gardening style is far more random than this. Oooh space, put food there. It helps that we have mild winters and can grow most things year round, except for some things that get way too hot in summer. Less planning helps me a lot. I don't have deadlines and restrictions. I can just have an idea to fill a space and make it happen. It keeps it fun for me. Haven't had the same garden two months in a row for many years.
Thank you for all your video's. Such great information, especially for new growers such as myself. Question.... do you and your family eat and preserve all you grow? Do you donate? Just curious what you do with your harvest.
In preparing the garden bed for next spring. Should any additional steps be taken if this year saw destruction of the squash by Squash Vine Borers and damage to tomatoes by way of white mold? I have seen mention of Neem oil and even mention of Vegetable Oil/Baking Soda spray. Before I put down my compose, I want to be sure I am not "tucking in" the bad stuff for the winter. Thanks for all the tips this season!
Central Texas frost date is around November 12th. What top 3 plants are the most hearty and nutritional for Texas Gardners? And thank you for the book, I recently got it and need to study it.
Thank you, I have been waiting for this for two weeks! :) May I ask how many people you are feeding? This will help me decide how to adjust your plan for my own.
QUESTION: I grow everything in raised beds so I don't rotate my plants. This year my cucumbers and squashes were destroyed by aphids. I used row covers right from the start so I'm thinking maybe they were in the soil before I planted. If so how do I prevent this form happening again. I love your book and find myself constantly going back to it for guidance.
Zone 5b, Chicago container gardening. Springs are very short, from nightly frosts to daily 90s in about 10 days. I have no space and my carrots are now finally gaining size, gonna leave them in as well as my kale that survived the hot summer. Why start over? Everything is still in from spring.
QUESTION: nothing's been growing in my garden all year and I want to figure out why so maybe something will grow this fall. Everything I try gets a few true leaves and after that stops growing. I've been getting the same soil mix for a while and they have plenty of light so I don't think either of those are the problem. Is there something else it could be? Thanks for your amazing videos!
you should put a list on what all you are planting .. i tried to see everything on your video but some are covered up .. never done a fall garden so dont know where to even start
Hi Brian! You have encouraged me to do gardening and I absolutely love it. I have a QUESTION. I live in NY zone 7. Mt indeterminate tomatoes are huge (around 10 feet) and keep growing. It's full of green tomatoes and blooms. Only a few got red on the buttom. Should I cut the tops to stop the plants growing and focus them on ripening? Thank you
AHA! Got your book and found the answer to my own question on page 170! You did know it all along. Thanks. Look forward to reading your book now more carefully. Loads of info. Lots to learn. Hopefully that would translate into fewer mistakes next spring.
so I am starting to plan my garden for next year. I am going to do a lot of 10 gallon bags and trying to figure out what to put in for soil.. In the 10 gallon bags i will be growing tomatoes, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. So my question is.. do i use Kellogg raised bed & potting soil to fill each? or do i make the cocoa coir/peat moss/pearlite home made mix? and with both options is is 100% for the pots regardless of the 3 types of plants? thanks

I may have gotten a little over zealous about a fall garden. The seeds were put in trays and under the grow lights a few weeks ago, I've been hardening my seedlings off this week. 🙂 My broccoli and brussel sprouts are about 3" tall at this point. We're in 8b with a short growing season, so hopfully I haven't messed things up already. Question: Do you put in companion plantings and mulch both?
QUESTION Garlic in a cold climate needs to be planted 6 weeks before the ground freezes. I'm in Missouri, how do I find out WHEN the ground is expected to freeze? This has to be different from the frost date, right?
Brian I'm so discouraged. I pulled everything in my garden a few weeks ago. I've been fighting with grubworms and this sweltering S Florida heat all summer. I haven't done anything in my garden in over a month now. The garden looks so empty and ugly. I want to start a fall garden but I feel so garden depressed (if that's even a thing) ☹️
I'm in 7b and have already started some of my fall seeds inside. Can you tell us what varieties of onions you're growing. I know here in North Carolina, we need short and intermediate day onions but it seems like almost all of the seeds I can find are long day.
Best way to end up with a fall garden? Don't be with someone that you have to break up with during the summer and leave your hard worked land and have nowhere to plant in the fall. #lifehax
Thanks for keeping me on track. I’m in a panic. I need raised bed frames and no one to help me build. Can’t afford pricy premade boxes. Anybody got suggestions?
I've seen plastic raised bed corners that are pre-formed to slide 2x4s into. Search the internet for "plastic raised garden bed corner joint." These are simple to slide pre-cut boards in to create simple raised beds. Hopefully you can cut boards to length, or have them cut at a big box store like Lowe's to the length you need.
Easiest boxes to make are still pine fence board. Not free but quickest and cheapest as far as i can tell besides pallets. I am doing 4 more this sunday for around $80 before soil, with a truck full of compost from our city itis about $140 before amendments. The beds are going to be (2) 3x6 and (2) 2x6. So look online at lowes for prices of 2x6x6 fence boards and 2x4x8. Good luck
Even with your all your subscribers your underrated words can’t explain how much you helped me

I've been juicing my beets greens and all in the VitaMix. I add banana and strawberries. Really good!

Yep like x10000s
Just in time! I’ve cleared a couple of areas! Next new moon in one week will plant seeds. Thank you!
Haha! Farmers Almanac! 😆
Planting on a new moon? Does that help
I read through your book from cover to cover in three days. Each night I would read and re-read a chapter or two. It's not only informative but it's an entertaining read. Coming from an author of two books, I know a good read when I see it. Great work Bryan.
Thank you! That means alot!
Thank you! I'm demolishing my wood raised garden to install a steel raised garden. Then the fall garden shall begin!
Thank you Brian! I’m starting a fall garden this year because of your encouragement. Now I need to get graph paper! 😁
Awesome!
If you are good on a computer you can make graph paper. Save a trip to the store.
Really enjoyed this episode-hearing your thought process around placement of plants is really valuable. Thank you, Brian.

Enjoying this series! So very helpful as usual!!
Now you have me excited for my fall garden. I still have quite a bit of plantings left from our spring garden. But we have to continue growing.☺️
Good!!

This was so helpful and answered a few of the questions I had for my first fall garden!
I love juicing beets with oranges and carrots!! delish. Can't wait for the fall garden.
Thanks for the onion planting tip for warmer weather areas. I'm in north Texas so good to know about nov and feb planting options.
Thanks for the detailed chart.. I was getting overwhelmed and was going to scratch my fall plantings😆 thank God I clicked on this! 😚😚😚
Your tropical garden in the background is gorgeous. You are truly a green thumb ☺️
Thank you for mentoring us😊

SO READY for less heat 🔥. Thanks for the inside look on how you plan your garden. Similar to mine with much more writing /research & erasing 😂

I have some pepper plants that I want to overwinter. Do I leave them in the beds or dig them out and put them inside. I'm in zone 7b

Remember to add 15 days to maturity when you plan an Autumn garden.
Who do purchase your seed potatoes from? My local source doesn’t stock until Dec/Jan.
so I am starting to plan my garden for next year. I am going to do a lot of 10 gallon bags and trying to figure out what to put in for soil.. In the 10 gallon bags i will be growing tomatoes, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. So my question is.. do i use Kellogg raised bed & potting soil to fill each? or do i make the cocoa coir/peat moss/pearlite home made mix? and with both options is is 100% for the pots regardless of the 3 types of plants? thanks
Where’s the link for the book?
Found it on Amazon! Thanks!
This is great! But question- I’ve read fennel is allelopathic & that only doll can survive near it, so I kept it separate. But I’d love to mix it in if that’s not the case! Also not one of my 8-9 fennels bulbed last year so other than fronds it’s only served as drawing in good bugs. Any idea how to get those delicious bulbs??
if im in Zone 8b do I need to get like something to cover the crops?
I’m new where I live right now. Zone here is 9a and 9b 🥵 3 digits,,,,
not ready yet for my veggie garden but very soon,,,,
Yup. Thats me too.
I haven't had luck with broccoli, cabbage or cauliflower unless I put them in a container. Could I put bunching onions in the pot with the brassicas?
Yup!
Thanks!!
Speaking of potatoes, do you know anywhere online or in Southern California to find seed potatoes for a fall harvest?
Any suggestions on where to purchase seeds?
When should I cover my brassicas to protect from insects? As soon as the seedlings emerge?
I cover mine same day I put in transplants. Works great
Yes!
Same day put in the ground. Brassicas dont need pollination so cover immediately to keep bugs out.
I may have gotten a little over zealous about a fall garden. The seeds were put in trays and under the grow lights a few weeks ago, I've been hardening my seedlings off this week. 🙂
My broccoli and brussel sprouts are about 3" tall at this point. We're in 8b with a short growing season, so hopfully I haven't messed things up already.
Question: Do you put in companion plantings and mulch both?
QUESTION
Garlic in a cold climate needs to be planted 6 weeks before the ground freezes. I'm in Missouri, how do I find out WHEN the ground is expected to freeze? This has to be different from the frost date, right?

Can’t find your link to Neptune Harvest

Easiest boxes to make are still pine fence board. Not free but quickest and cheapest as far as i can tell besides pallets. I am doing 4 more this sunday for around $80 before soil, with a truck full of compost from our city itis about $140 before amendments. The beds are going to be (2) 3x6 and (2) 2x6. So look online at lowes for prices of 2x6x6 fence boards and 2x4x8. Good luck
