Console fun! I'll have some more stuff on this bad boy very soon. Subscribe to be notified.
Just picked up the 16-channel version! Great idea to have a control surface writing your automation, then returning back to the desk.
I was quite excited to get my first mixing console in 1981, it was a 1978 Teac M15 with 16 input channels, 16 monitoring channels, and 8 busses. In 2006 I got my first digital mixing console, a Tascam M3200 with 32 input channels, 16 busses, and 40 channels, all integrated with ProTools. I am extremely happy with my setup and it still does everything I need. Andrew you have an amazing studio setup, you should be very proud of the work you do and how amazing your studio is.
Appreciate that!
Just got a 1984 Tascam M-600, 32ch 16 bus last month running into Ableton & Logic. Dreamed of working this way for 20+ years!
Enjoy the M3200!
I would love to see a demonstration video of how the console l is used in conjunction with your DAW when tracking and mixing, real life circumstances such as your individual project, settings, sample rate, buffer, settings, etc.… thanks for all the great content!
Many to come! My DAW settings are nearly always the same 24 / 48 at 256 buffer rate.
I used to record on a Trident. I loved it. I recorded tracks from the direct outs on the channel section. I used to work with Dean Jensen of Jensen Transformers, and he had worked on Rush's Trident console. He said the channel section was stock, but the group and master bus was modified. I modified mine, but still didn't use the group and master bus, until I was mixing.
Bro you have no idea how much this video helped me to understand a console desk, especially as a student who is just thrown into a console room without any knowledge of the use and how to. This is such a good video that makes me feel less overwhelmed by so many faders and I can now try to use the desk available at my university without too much stress. Thanks you ❤. Please if you can make a complete mix and mastering session using your trident for students will help a lot in understanding the sonic qualities and mixing techniques as well. Once again, thank you for making such a wonderful and helpful video
Can't thank you enough for this video!! I've had a Toft ATB 16 for over 10 years and have always second guessed myself on the setup. I'm using mine exactly as you are. LOVE your channel!
I've drooled over the toft for years. How well do you think it compares to this trident?
I've absolutely loved watching the progression of your studio the last couple of years. It's inspiring and man I am so happy for you too! Just an amazing studio you have built!
Awesome Andrew! I'm totally envious. Thanks for all your videos and great studio tours!
I absolutely love that the EQ is right above the faders as opposed to above aux's which is a pain in the studio. Thank you for sharing all this information about your studio and this board is on my wish list!
Credit where credit is due. This is the best state I’ve seen any of the iterations of your studio in. You meticulously planned this out and executed. Clearly your wheelhouse is the analog side of things.
As your setup begins to stabilize now, would really love to see content about what you use it for in the future. Recording and mixing, etc.
Thanks! I have a playlist where I post content like that, titled "production". A lot of people who watch the channel don't see those videos.
One reason I´m constantly advocating the merits of The Soundcraft Ghost line of consoles is the ability to go direct out post gain but pre or post eq. especially when recording multiple musicians at a time,- like a full band.
Normally in the good ole days we´d track drums, bass and basic rhythm guitars,- sometimes with a guide vocal,- at the same time.
You could the di-out all signals for the DAW, as raw signals,- and at the same time set up a mix where the instruments sound good in the headphones to the people playing them.
Often do a separate recording of the sound through the console as a reference for when coming to actually producing the song,- that way you have a preliminary group mix of how we thought it sounded good on the day we recorded it for keeping you on track with what was actually the idea about the song when you get to the world of infinite sonic possibilities from the seq. and the plugins in the DAW.
A couple of really nice outboard rack preamps for tracking acoustic instruments and vocals aren´t a bad idea either.
Be fascinating to follow your jouney from now on,- how it´s going to change your approach, thinking, creative habits etc.
Happy to see you finding your way back to the hybrid ways of yore.
It's such a handsome console too!
Andrew is dope. Informative without flexing his equipment.
This is so cool. It would be really great if you went through all of that in much greater detail. Like almost as a tutorial. I know that’s a big ask. :) But for us guys trying to learn, while I understand the gist of what you’re saying when you describe how you’re using it (sending this here or routing that there) it would be great to see it in action. Like step by step. Because it remains rather conceptual to us dudes who have never used a console. If that makes sense. There’s just so little info out there like this where you can learn in a hands on way. Great stuff as always, though, man. Thanks.
It's so much to think about and keep straight in your head.
You have a great studio there, thanks for explaining your board in detail 👍
Dude!! Ive been following you for a while, I think you can now graduate to call your studio a Pro Studio, Not a home. You have really stepped up the game here man. Well done. I cannot wait to hear drums through this!!
I bet this thing sounds glorious. I’d probably stick w this console for the rest of my life on any music production I do.
Love it! Awesome setup, Andrew!
Thanks!
The concept of “always plugged in and routed” is the only way to go. I do the same, my guitars & keys are all patched in and normalized to an audio input interface to the Mac. Walk up, launch Reaper, arm the channel and play.
I set up a project template in Reaper that has EZDrummer set up to multi-channel, mains out set up with a couple default VST’s, guitar and keys in already there and synth VST’s all loaded up. I then set up Reaper to always use that template on open and for the base for all new projects.
Thanks andrew that makes me dream I’ve known some people who have Trident consoles they were always satisfied about it
wow insane! I don't think I will ever use or own a an analog console but def nice to see you break it down for us and show us all the cables as well! lol
It's coming along nicely. I cant imagine what someone paying retail for all of those db25 snakes would pay. I've had a private home studio in every living room I've ever had, and if I had your setup, I would move your side cars somewhere on axis with your monitors. The only good way to make critical adjustments without guessing or running back and forth would be to wear headphones at this point.
Also, with two spare drum channels, add stereo room mics, and get some dimension. Thanks for showing off the console. Its really nicely laid out.
Thanks.
Love the Danger Fox
THANKS, AM!
Its amazing how gear nutz we all go and how quickly it happens, this is a great example!
And yes, I am a fellow gear addict :) looking good!
Long live the Console!
You should be very proud, Andrew. I love consoles - they are a huge financial investment, but once you mix with a console, you'll never look back to mixing with a mouse. You have developed a beautiful recording studio. Congratulations!
Thanks!
This is absolutely ideal
Andrew...I can't wait for the tape machine!!
That was actually interesting, I always wondered how you connected everything to your patchbays. And at first I thought "phew, that console costs over 20k" … but considering that I just spent 8.5k on a 32-4 channel Speck X.Sum summing mixer and a Cranborne 500R8 with some modules, (basically only 2 input channels with pre-amp, compressor and EQ, plus the USB audio interface function), that console isn't a bad value for money.
gorgeous console andrew! would like to hear you open up those preamps and maybe some eq too
and by the way very smart and straigth up set up great job
love your videos brother keeps me motivated every time i watch you
all Love
FREAKING BEAUTIFUL!!!!! THANKS FOR SHARING!!!!
solid
Nice, pretty much state of the art at a reasonable price. If one wants to come close for a lot less money, consider the Soundcraft Signature Multi-Track 22.
I’m doing the same thing with a soundcraft series two 32ch console. Great video!
Very neat setup
Thanks!
OMG OMG, I love your videos and it's the first time I get to be the first to see it!!! gj;sfka;glkha
Wow! Someday maybe.
Nice mate. And in general, it all sounds better going through the desk. Even when I had my 16 channel spirit mixer and had my interface going through that it sounded a lot better. Everyone fighting over expensive preamp and a decent mixer does all that at a lot less. Just takes up more space. Nice video
I wish you could work on a project by using this awesome console from scratch and showing its power and capabilities.
This looks so intimidating 🤧
Master one channel and you've Mastered them all but the Monitor/Master section is the grand prize!!! don't be intimidated, be inspired to learn!!!
I think it's a mistack to put mic preamp's on a patchbay. by doing so, you are creating more point of faileor and noise adding to a mic preamp. just put the insert's , line level connections and outputs on the patchbay and go directlly with your mic conncetions to a wallbox.
That's a really nice setup! Is there anything you wish the Trident had? Like motorized faders or some sort of AD/DA conversion? What do you end up using all those WA73s for now? 🙂
More channels haha. Automation would be nice too, but it gets tricky now because I do so much in pro tools. This definitely the best and most affordable option to get the best of both worlds.
@@AndrewMasters Wait, I thought you were using Logic! 😁
SO RAD DUUUUUDE!
In another life, I'd like to have a studio like this.
You can work for it. Andrew worked years for this. Slowly but surely you'll make it there
Great
You only return mono from the Ox? The room sounds in the Ox in stereo are amazeballs!
My head just exploded:) seems so incredibly complicated. So did you have any help wiring everything up? I can't even get my outboard gear going with pro tools and my apollo x8p. thru my db25 ins and outs. It's maddening.
How does it sound? Compared to api/neve etc? Do the transformers add weight while recording? Does it sound better and how would you describe that sound? Litteraly the most important part of the reason why you would get this right? Wonder what all of your experiences are/have been on consoles regarding sound quality.
Peace
What are your thoughts on the WA73 pres vs the Trident pres for recording drums and other instruments? Obviously they're both fantastic and can often depend on the source, but are you leaning in favour of one or the other at this point? The Trident has been on the wish list for a while now for me, it looks great in your room!
😍😍😍😍
Hi Andrew, why don't you use the monitor section in channels for DAW returns, only use main channels (23/24 from what I see)?
Do you use additional Mon In inputs? If so, please tell me what you use it for ?
Hi, just curious what attracted you to the Trident? At that price point you could get into SSL or maybe used API territory? If you sold those Heritage racks, you definitely could. I'm a big Trident fan but I keep hearing they sold the name and the new stuff doesn't have the same mojo (even from my reps at the two big dealers). The console looks gorgeous though! I'm actually shopping for my next big step up. Would love to hear why you chose the Trident. From the looks of your studio you seem to have the resources to go bigger. Personally, I'm wrestling with spending that much money and ending up not getting exactly what I want in the long run.
Pov mixing video?
I must guess that you are using a sony camera, Normally handheld footage doesn't bother me but since the wobbling is so intense in this video it actually made me queasy. As a tracking engineer who uses a console daily, Both a ATI Paragon 2 (A Live version of SSL E series with API mic preamps) and a Soundcraft MH-2 I'm really happy you have found out how useful a console can be. But jeez it's been a long time since I was made Sea-Sick from video wobble. LOL
Nope, canon r5 with 15-35mm 2.8 RF L. Wobble on the r5 can be quite annoying when handheld. I came up on consoles at eastwest so it’s nice to get back to the workflow started on.
@@AndrewMasters Love the videos keep up the great work!! I wasn't trying to be mean or weird about it, I just found it curious that it made me queasy at all since it normally doesn't bother me. Maybe I'm getting a cold or something, LOL.
Nice studio man, on tha left, are those Original Neve 1073's ? How does this console sound ? Dirty, clean, to perfect ?
Dope!
Is Trident working on a automation system for this console as an option?
Dude, what is that background music, that slaps
Hi Andrew big fan of the channel!! I’m currently recording my own stuff at home and was able to bag a soundcraft lx7 24 channel mix console and I was wondering in your opinion, what is the best way to record from this. Am I best using the direct outs for each channel into my audio interface or is there a better method ? Any advice would be super
Nothing I can see myself be able to afford in the next 15 years, still saving up for the appollo, but i still find it really interesting how consoles are really used. There are so many misconeptions out there. Great video. Also if anyone knows: what are those putec eqs that arent the ones from warm audio?
Those are the audioscape eq-p’s
I didn't see the Grace unit on your gear list...?
Hey, does the trident 88 come in a 16 channel as well?
If you had to start from scratch with a 10K budget, how would you get it done?
Hey man, I've been loving your videos recently. I have a question, what do you think of the current rise in atmos mixing, and how do you think it will affect you and your current set-up? Are you going to implement atmos in your studio? Cheers.
can i ask why no large format console would look nice in there
My q is, why?
Just one thought, a mixer like this will probably kill recalling a mix. That is if your not printing everything that goes true the mixer.....and that will ad at least one layer of work and then you have to do the recall ITB. I mean, what is the mixer for, what does it add to your already impressive setup other than looking god? Please enlighten me :-)
Money to blow
Lol you should actually watch the video.
@@AndrewMasters I
Now I watched it a second time and I still don’t get it. I am genuinely interested in why you spend 40K+++ on an small analog console that has no fader automation. What have you gained in production value by installing this mixer?
I come from the analog world and I’m an old man. I have used analog mixers for more than 25 years but that was 20 years ago....:-) Most of the consoles I used then had fader automation and one even Total Recall :-) Nightmare to do mix recalls on any of those consoles/workplaces
So what is the new console for? Is it for the transformers? Is it for the visuals? Is it G.A.S.?
What is, to you, the production benefits with installing a 30k mixer, without fader automation. I’m really interested in this as it to me would be contra productive (that is for me it would). What IS the real world benefits of your new setup as YOU see it.
Please enlighten me
Hm, so are you not using your outboard pres anymore? Maybe I missed something, but I'd sell them if I got a console setup like that
Great video and congrats on the console..On an unrelated note, I was wondering if you could recommend a display monitor that would be a good match for my 2017 iMac with 5K Retina display. I recently purchased a Mac studio and I'm having difficulty finding a suitable monitor. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.
is it being used? Let's hear it.
How are you setting up headphone mixes for the artists when tracking?
How do you set levels/EQ on the console and check for phasing issues etc. when you are the engineer and the drummer? I struggle with this.
Start somewhere, record a few bars, come back and listen/adjust. Repeat until satisfied. Or have someone play drums haha.
When do we get to hear it then? Didn't you make a video and said you'd A/B it against the warm audio 1073's?
So no compression built in the channels?? All that's outboard Compressors correct?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Man I’ve been waiting on this series of videos. I’m looking at Tridents,…is there any reason to choose the LED meters over the VU….. other than personal preference?
How do you have your Grace Monitor Controller setup with your console and Apollo? Does the console go into the balanced in and the Apollo through the usb in? Can you also switch to record through the Apollo as well? I’m considering this type of setup with my Apollo and an API 1608
It's doing everything ! ...until it wasn't 😂
😮
Getting a desk is only half the journey/cost
Then you realise you have to drop a BOMB on cables
Loved your content! If I may ask, what digital to analogue converter are you using? I’ve recently got a tascam m3500 mixing desk and I’m a wanting to use it for hybrid mixing and I just can’t seem to find a D to A converter that will do the job
can it be used as a live mixer
Are you plugging your guitar straight into the console or into an external pre?
looks like thru the OX Box
Amps hit the ox box, to DI to trident preamp
You need to get a separate Rig to record your 2 bus at 192
Do you plan on installing an atmos speaker setup in your studio at some point soon? Or because of the console, do you feel you are stuck with having to work with stereo only?
Andrew are you going truly direct w your stuff coming in or are you routing your drums through eq or compression before it hits the trident?
It depends on the sound of what I’m recording and the context of the song. Everything is always decided based on what’s right for the song.
@@AndrewMasters thank you! That thing is completely amazing.
Hello Bro! I have a question. I saw that you use the Pro-Tools software. Do you also use the Avid Pro Tools MTRX Studio? Please answer my question, it would be really nice. Thank you!
Yes I use pro tools, no I don’t have an avid interface. Currently have an apogee symphony 32x32 but am switching to a galaxy 32.
I think your home studio is really cool. I really like your hardware too.
@@AndrewMasters
would love to work with you as an audio assistant for free for real :)
It seems more complicated than it is just gotta remember output to input lol
There is no compressor in this console, did anyone notice ?
ok! but how u tracking drums while drums are in other end of this room. i wonder do u use any remote app or what? running back and forth from dest do drums?
Second setup next to the drums
@@AndrewMasters smart! I give a sub but im a fan about 3 yrs now ! ;) all the best!
Mixer name please with pro
How are you able to easily switch between the Console mic preamp and the Warm 73's? I thought it was a bad idea to run mics through patchbays before hitting a preamp but I could be wrong, I don't have extensive experience with them or consoles
You patch into the pres you want to use. It's standard to have mic lines running through your patchbay. You just have to have your normalling settings correct.
@@AndrewMasters Well, if our project studio ever grows to have as much gear as yours (we have a 16 channel interface and a couple of outboard options but everything is just inline rn), this is a very good lesson to learn now! thanks Andrew
@@AndrewMasters So you have your mic lines normalled to the trident, and patch into outboard pre's as needed?
@@anonymous_friend essentially yes
🙂👍
What cables are you using with your Roland Juno?
Midi cables, audio cables and a usb.
Ok cool. What TRS cables would you recommend for keyboard audio?
Something durable, long enough for the run. I make my own cables because it's infinitely more affordable that way, and I know that the connections are always dependable. I use Neutrik connectors and Carare quad cable. Most insulated cables and neutriks are the strongest longest lasting connectors.
If you don't want to make them but want something that'll last forever just pull the trigger on mogami.
1/4" instrument sweetwater.sjv.io/jreaA6
XLR microphone sweetwater.sjv.io/1r9zQx
These have lifetime warranties, so anything happens you can get them replaced.
You need a 4k tv instead of that small monitor
Oh yeah?
@@AndrewMasters I got a 4k 43" AORUS FV43U display last autumn and what I DIDN'T EXPECT was that it caused a ground hum when closer than 10" to my audio gear (or closer than 2 ft to my speakers), even with everything connected to Furman power conditioners and all audio and power cables far apart. So while it looks awesome and is much more detailed and useable from a distance, I had a terrible time figuring out the right spot for it. My old 17" Samsung never caused so many problems.
console looks a little far no?
It’s actually really ergonomic
Didn’t age well
