They were saying this about traffic about the L.A. Olympic Games in 1984. Even back then L.A. has some major traffic back then, but very little during the weeks of the games. I know because I was a volunteer driver during the games driving athletes from the two Olympic dorm villages at UCLA and USC to their competitions all over L.A. I was such a blast and no traffic. Prior to the games some locals planned on leaving L.A. and vacationing elsewhere, lots of tourists stayed away from all of the bad press. Hotel bookings were down. Local amusement parks were uncrowded. After the wonderful opening ceremonies the locals came out in droves to see the games. Everything from soccer to field hockey. Some many of the largest venues for many sporting events filled with lots of spectators for events like archery, la crosse, badminton, handball. Visitors could see some event seats costing as low as $4-$6 dollars. The 84 L.A. games was one of the most successful, profitable and well attended games in the history of the Olympics. The city had no debt from the games and they only needed to build a few sports facilities and just renovate a few others. I'll always remember it fondly as a great thing for the city. Something that made the city and it's residences proud to be Angelenos.
I’m from Chicago and was sad when we lost the Olympic bid to Rio in 2016, but I’m pumped for LA getting the games! Would love to attend for sure, glad to see the Olympics back in the US
Hopefully LA keep the homeless on the streets with their trash, diseases, drugs and high crime rates while other countries see how much the US has fallen
I wish our city had similar public transportation to that of New York. More tourists would come from all over the world to see this city since people can’t bring their vehicles overseas and you need a car to go everywhere. LA should become a walkable city
My comment was posted 10 months ago but I think there’s a problem with hosting the olympics now. LA decided to expand the metro transit greatly by 2028 to accommodate tourists to watch the games. Our city is only catering to tourists which I think is wrong since people that are low income have been taking slow buses for decades to get anywhere. I also hear stories that the olympics are partnering with Airbnb to displacing renters out of their apartments to make space for tourists to come here. Instead of buildings stadiums and other things that’ll be left unused after the games, we should be building more housing for low income people. LA should’ve had better public transit a long time ago but the voters and people that mainly drive are out of touch with those that have no car they are only taking into consideration the tourists and not the people who have been taking buses forever that can’t afford a car in this expensive city that’s why LA has voted now for better transit
LA will never be a walkable city - it comprised of hundreds of neighborhoods with there own unique Vibe that sprawls from the valley to the bay, It’s perfect the way it is
Unlike other cities that have hosted the Olympics and fallen into debt, LA has sports venues already in place. Glad to see Metro expanding light rail and subway lines. LAX's $14B renovations were much overdue. I see lots of buildings and new hotels rising in DTLA. The city leads the nation in building apartment units by a fairly large margin as well. I expect Los Angeles to gain a substantial amount of revenue by hosting the Olympics and making future advancements to its infrastructure.
@@moniquearnaud8029 It's still going to be a nightmare, LA's Metro system is just way too small. This might be a wake up call and hopefully it leads to more aggressive expansion after the Olympics.
