Hello Mike, so pleased to have stumbled on your channel! I'm a retired Adult Ed art tutor and used your wonderful book a lot (in fact a lot of my students bought it!). It's the best book about drawing ever written, and I still regularly leaf through and admire the artwork. I love graphite work, sadly arthritis makes long sessions with a pencil difficult, but I still draw all the time. Re having all the best materials, one of my dear old ladies came along to my watercolour classes and to my horror produced a clutch of crappy old make up brushes to paint with (shudder). But she made some lovely paintings with them! Looking forward to watching your videos 👍
Thanks, Lesley. I'll have a Part 2 to this video for you in a couple of weeks. I've a video to complete for my DrawWithMike members first. And Drawing From Line to Life is still very much alive... I've sold two in the past hour. 1 UK, 1 USA 😃
Such good advice! I started drawing as a young child, and I drew on everything--lined notebook paper in school, typing paper, in the margins of homework, etc. I drew with a plain No. 2 pencil. In high school I discovered drawing pencils and decent paper, but it was those years of casual practice that prepared me for more serious drawing. The year after I graduated from high school, I won a first place prize in an art exhibit contest in our town. This is an excellent video! Thank you! I'm not a beginner, but I'll be sure to recommend this video to people who say, "I wish I could draw."
Your experience is mine too, Kathleen. I drew on anything, and often preferred ballpoint pen in the early days. I used to drive my teachers mad at school, because I'd spend a half hour on a homework essay... and then another hour or more adding illustrations. 😄 I've been wanting to make this video for ages. And there's a Part 2 already partly made. And I suspect a Part 3 might appear too.
Hi Rich! It's been a while since the workshops. Many thanks for that. This is a video I've been wanting to make for ages, and there'll be a Part 2 next month.
I love your remarks about not needing fancy materials. I have both fancy materials and super-cheap materials, and I find I'm far more inventive and free when I'm using the cheap materials, because I'm not worried about wasting anything. Thanks for another great video. 😊
Sheila, I so agree with you! Over the years, I've found "owing fancy stuff" to be one of the most common reasons for an artist not starting on their journey. At the peak are the "All the gear and no idea" group. I've no doubt that group is found in almost every hobby and interest. It's the belief that if you own all the "right" tools, you'll automatically be good at that craft. But it doesn't work that way. Put it all away in a box, grab an HB/#2 pencil, a sheet of paper or the back of an envelope, and begin to draw. Then draw some more... and more... And THEN you'll become good.
Hello Mike. I really enjoyed this video. My confidence in drawing tends to yo-yo pretty extremely but your videos always give me the boost I need to get back at it. Thank you :^)
Well, I'm really pleased to hear that. There will be a PART TWO Soon, and possibly a PART THREE. But I have videos to make for my DrawWithMike community in between. That said, PART TWO is already partly made, so the wait might not be long.
@@drawwithmike great to see the vids Mike, I cant believe its around 16 years that I attended one of your weekend courses ! I still have my drawing framed, one day ill purchase "Done Balin" my favourite drawing...
@@OurFrenchHouseRenovation 16 years.... I can believe it... I'm getting old! 😊 "Done Balin'" is probably my favourite drawing, because it's the view across the fields behind our house, and features my then-neighbour. I thoroughly enjoyed haymaking with him every year. And, of course, Beardies are my favourite breed - although this pair lived 10 miles away.
Your book Line to Life, your RUclips and DrawWithMike videos continually encourage and inspire. Thank You! ✍🏻
