A lot of tricks and knowledge in this vídeo! Thank you so much. What do you think about graphite powder and solvent?
It's the spawn of the Devil! OK... maybe that's too harsh. 🙄😉 I've never used it, or felt the need to use it. That's possibly because it doesn't offer a great deal of control. And possibly because I might need masking to be effective. My friend JD Hillberry uses it along with frisket. But, for me, as soon as you introduce any sort of masking, you restrict the options available to you. It's too controlled. I much prefer the freedom to change my mind at any point and not draw in a way that I was expecting to. I prefer freedom when I'm drawing, not pre-determined boundaries. Briefly: I prefer to apply graphite manually in layers rather than apply a dust with a mind of its own.
@drawwithmike thank you so much! I use faber castell 9000 but sometimes I feel is too light. Some artist on Internet use tombow pencils but I can't buy it. I'm trying to find any solution because I don't fall in the dark side of charcoal or carbon 😅
@@antonioblanco3086 If it feels too light, I can thoroughly recommend either Faber or Staedtler clutch pencils (aka Lead Holders). Although I often use wood-cased pencils in the videos, I haven't used one to seriously draw with in 40 years. Clutch pencils (mine are Staedtler 780) are slightly heavier, so they aid control. And, unlike all wood-cased, they remain constant - constant weight, length and balance. Every time I pick one up, I know EXACTLY how it's going to perform. One of my clutch pencils is a Faber-Castell, but they all take the same 2mm leads. And I always use Staedtler leads.
@drawwithmike thanks a lot! I'll try it! I'm starting my carreer as an artist and I've many questions like this or pricing my artwork etc. It's a pleasure talking with people like you! Thanks
@@antonioblanco3086 You're more than welcome. And DO try clutch pencils. Mine are mainly 30+ years old - they last! So the initial outlay is well worth it. And if you have problems, I sell the leads, holders etc from my website - and starter kits. This will explain about pencils and their benefits: sibleyfineart.com/video_access.htm?iiv
Your videos help me so much! Thank you 😊
In that case, I'll carry on making them. 😉 Many thanks.
Thank you for the time and thought that went into these very helpful instructions! 🤩
Thank you teacher!
You're very welcome... and if I've helped you progress, I've done my job. 😉
Thank you! Is it the same process with other art mediums like soft pastel and colored pencil?
I am, and have always been, a graphite purist. 😉 I suspect the use of fixatives is much the same with other mediums - especially the "few light coats" approach, but I can't honestly comment.
Love this detailed explanation. Thanks
Happy to help. And thanks for the thumbs-up 😉
No maatter go w masterful a drawing or pInting, whoever created th grid 2:10 truly was a wonderful artist.
Got sold ethanol in a bottle as fixative. Used a cotton swab to apply it lightly but it still stained the paper on one of my favorite drawings im so mad rn. I literally tried it on drawings I wasnt afraid ruining and they were fine but for some reason the one I love gets stained. Will throw this out and follow your advice
Ouch!!! I really feel for you! I can only repeat what I said in the video: It took teams of highly trained chemists to formulate an efficient fixative... so why use anything else?! And always apply a few light coats. Never soak your drawing.
FINALLY ! Someone who is detailed and thoughtful in explaining this process.🎉❤
Thank you! Happy to help.
This is SO helpful!
❣️
Useful vid Mike. I've never got white backgrounds when I paint and have either grey or black backgrounds with the charcoal. I have quick fixed graduation problems with multiple levels layers and masking due to lack of daylight, awful weather and nowhere to do the indoor set up or studio lights.... I tend to use exposure compensation to prevent under exposing due to lots of lighter values.
Thanks, ToniMarie. Like you, I've used multiple layers of Levels for those dreaded gradated photos. But I've also used DODGE and BURN in attempts to manually rectify the problems. I use both of those in the full version of this video, and cover other problems too, such as skewed images. I used to receive those very often at Starving Artists. Ultimately, my argument has always been that artists really should show their work looking its best. Otherwise, you simply can't expect anyone to fully appreciate it. Hence, this video, which I hope helps at least a few artists - if only to give them something to base their own experiments on. Given the lovely detail you accomplish in your artwork, I'm assuming clarity and sharpness are aspects you need to carefully control in your images. You certainly do in your videos.
Give me your email --I will send u pics of my oil paintings and why they need to be dead accurate with grid method ---50 yrs !
Use the Contact page on my website. You'll find it there: SibleyFineArt.com
Cant beat a detailed grid - over image -dead accurate --without it you will create a crooked lop-sided nightmare -----!
True! Although I do consider STAGE 2 - where you incorporate changes to turn the image into YOUR image - to be essential. Ultimately, if your guideline drawing is inaccurate, you simply waste time creating the subsequent drawing. That was particularly true in my case, because I drew dogs for people who know absolutely everything about their chosen breed.
First you grid the image --then you dont? please make some sense?
O.K.. 🎉.
I'm just now starting to draw, and was skimming through videos of how to use fixatives when I came across yours--and I'm so glad I did! Thank you for such a thoughtful and beautifully done video, with the added bonus of absolutely stunning work. I'm looking forward to learning more!
Hi Sarah. Thanks! Happy to help. You should find more to help you on my website: SibleyFineArt.com - "Drawing from Line to Life" book, workshops, and the DrawWithMike community. I have learned more from your website and RUclips videos over the years than from any other source. I am overwhelmed at your knowledge, but also at your incredible generosity in giving others the benefit of your experience and skill. I have neglected to thank you up until now, but please let me correct that and say a heartfelt thank you today! ❤
Well, you've absolutely made my day! Thank you - that was so very kind of you. And now I feel even more encouraged to continue. 😊
Sheer Dashed Awesomeness!😎
Coming from such an excellent and respected artist such as your good self... you've made my day, Owen. Thank you!
Thank you Mike for another motivational video! Thanks also for the final tips! ¡Bonito día! 🥰
You're welcome. 🙂 I think there are four stages of development, so (probably) two more videos to come. I'm not a youngster any more, so I'm trying to unload my mind while I still can. 😉
Thanks for good video! 🎉 I have your book 📕
Great advice for everyone! You can always learn something new.
✍🏻Draw with Mike (Sibley)❣️ 🎸Mark Knopfler❣️
You like Mark Knopfler? Me too! I just wish I could have included more in the video. 😉
Watching Stage 1 isn't essential, but you can view it here: ruclips.net/video/hw3VmYYjWhE/видео.html. And if you have watched it, thanks for your support. STAGE 3 and 4 to come.
I am amazed at the amount of detail that is in the drawing when you opened up the screen to show the full drawing, stunning. Thank you for sharing.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
This was fantastic information, thank you, subscribed
How do I indent a blank rectangle or square into a piece of art paper. (I want to have a small piece of artwork, for example 1 ½" x 2 ½" - and some slightly larger - indented into a piece of art paper to be then matted and framed.) Is there some kind of an embossing tool available for this?
If I'm understanding you correctly, you want to embed a previously-drawn image - a small remarque - into the margin of another artwork or print? I regret I don't have an answer for you. All the indenting I've ever used revolves around simple line, not complete areas. And, while I've drawn hundreds of remarques in the past, I've always drawn them directly on the print itself, and not tried to later insert one. If you ever find an answer, please let us know, because I can't think of any way to achieve it.
Brilliant! Thank you so much for clearly explaining these terms. This is so helpful!
Thanks, Sara. One of the benefits of making videos is that I get to understand things that I was never completely certain about myself... and this is one of those. 😉 I do understand the use of contrast and lighting, but I was unsure about using the Low- and High-key terms correctly. Well, I am now. And I'm happy it's helped you, too.
Again … these videos are awesome thank you for posting them
You're very welcome - and I'll continue to make them.
What an awesome video
Thanks! That makes all the work very worthwhile.
It's so funny because I discovered myself that the top crown cap served as a sharpener too years ago.
Like you, I accidentally discovered the sharpener. I think I was just bored one day, peered up the end with the big hole and saw a couple of blades. 😉
I've taken 2 drawing courses by artists and no one ever suggested this. Always, as you said ,do again, again, again!! Thank you soooo much. !!
You're welcome, Barbara. Possibly those other two artists aren't as bothered as I am with filling the tooth and removing holes in their shading. Or they might prefer the light and softer approach? Or maybe they build up their values from light to dark? I've never understood that approach. If you want it very dark or black, just be bold and GO FOR IT, and fill the tooth! 😉

Oh my goodness this channel is a god send! I am so used to looking up tutorials and finding everything charcoal! Finally usable graphite tutorials! Yay!
You're welcome. 😃 And thanks for that, you've made my day. I don't think I've used charcoal, but I did at one time dabble with carbon and graphite. And then I decided to be a graphite purist. I have over 50 videos now, online courses that I run at Drawspace.com, and of course my book "Drawing from line to life". Any one of those should help you, although you'll have to join us at DrawWithMike.net to see all the videos.
Very helpful for beginners ie myself.
Thanks, because it's you they were made for. 😉 I have over 50 of these videos at DrawWithMike.net, I run drawing courses at Drawspace.com, and you'd find my book "Drawing From Line to Life" very helpful too. Details of all at SibleyFineArt.com.
Why do you use the Staedler Tech pencil as opposed to a regular Staedler pencil that comes in a range of values or hard to soft? I use a long tip electric sharpener.
I prefer to use clutch pencils (aka Lead Holders)for good reasons. They are slightly heavier, for example, which I find aids control. And the main reasons are that they remain CONSTANT in weight, length and balance. So, every time I pick one up, I know EXACTLY how it's going to perform. Where wood-cased pencils shorten and lighten in use, and need constant relearning. I explain it more fully in this video (complimentary access): sibleyfineart.com/video_access.htm?iiv
Just bought the sharpener and was wondering why I was getting no joy. Now I feel a bit silly. But thank you! Most useful.
Welcome to the club! There’s nothing intuitive about the sharpener, and no instructions. I discovered the hard way how to use it. Although I didn't understand the use of the "blunt" hole until much later.
Gracias, Mike !!!!!!!!
Great video. Thank you for sharing these tips. Very valuable video.
Thanks! I'll have a Part 2 for you as soon as I finished working on another video for my DrawWithMike members.
Excellent tutorial
Thanks, Mark. I should have more for you soon.
Great video, thank you very much.
Thank you, Linda!
Hello Mike, so pleased to have stumbled on your channel! I'm a retired Adult Ed art tutor and used your wonderful book a lot (in fact a lot of my students bought it!). It's the best book about drawing ever written, and I still regularly leaf through and admire the artwork. I love graphite work, sadly arthritis makes long sessions with a pencil difficult, but I still draw all the time. Re having all the best materials, one of my dear old ladies came along to my watercolour classes and to my horror produced a clutch of crappy old make up brushes to paint with (shudder). But she made some lovely paintings with them! Looking forward to watching your videos 👍
Thanks, Lesley. I'll have a Part 2 to this video for you in a couple of weeks. I've a video to complete for my DrawWithMike members first. And Drawing From Line to Life is still very much alive... I've sold two in the past hour. 1 UK, 1 USA 😃
Super informative!
This was extremely helpful. Thank you!
Great advice for aspiring artists! Thanks for continuing to give to the art community, Mike! You are continuing source of inspiration!
Hi Rich! It's been a while since the workshops. Many thanks for that. This is a video I've been wanting to make for ages, and there'll be a Part 2 next month.
¡Buen día Mike! Thank you very much for this motivational video. Especially for the tips on lines and shading. 🥰 Have a nice weekend. ☺
Thank you! I should have another for you next month.
Hi Mike...years ago I took a course from you in Yellowstone. I couldn't seem to get my head around exactly what you were trying to teach mainly the negative drawing. Now when I see this email from you, you have peaked my interest for a second time and I am going to pull out your wonderful book to read once again. With these beginner you tubes, I may be able to do it. I just loved your teaching and your work. You were an amazing teacher back then. It wasn't you, it was all me. So I am going to try again. Cheers Mike.
really helpful
Your book Line to Life, your RUclips and DrawWithMike videos continually encourage and inspire. Thank You! ✍🏻
