For those wanting to understand this principle from a western boxing perspective, look for videos on how to punch like Jack Dempsey or read his book "Championship Fighting". Essentially what's happening is instead relying solely on the extension of your arm, hip rotation and pushing off your back leg to generate power, you throw your entire mass into your punch. It is a far more efficient way to generate a lot of force in your punches, as net force = mass x acceleration, while keeping your footing, and therefore balance, stable.
"Fall into the punch" - it does generate a lot of power, and your skeletal structure does the rest. However, and this what most martial arts don't account for, power is not what matters except to knock the target backward. Precision is. A powerful blow leaves a nasty bruise, but a precise one disables the target. You don't have to hit the jaw that hard to KO someone. You don't have to hit the solar plexus that hard to spasm the diaphram muscle. You don't have to hit the nerve in the interior tricep that hard to numb the arm and rob it of strength.

The key here is the proper and correct position of the Hips and the Tail Bone along with your soles firmly planted into the ground which in turn stabilizes your center of gravity. Practical application: When the hips and the tailbone are in the correct position, your center of gravity is stabilized. By twisting your hips and body at the same direction, the center of gravity shifts toward the position in which you move your legs therefore generating a force with your full body weight in it. (due to the sudden shift in center of gravity). Try throwing a punch using your upper body then try this one which uses the lower body and you will feel the difference in force generated.
It's been years since I trained in a dojo officially, so this was great for refreshing my memory. Proper technique and form based on understanding of body mechanics are essential to maximize power for sure. Excellent video from Naka Sensei.
1) In the 1st push he described the push add coming from the back foot pushing into the ground. The fist and the ball of the foot (he said ball of the thumb mistakenly) move in tandem. It generates power to the punch, but weakens the center of gravity. 2) In the 2nd setup, he says to use the pelvis to stabilize the turn, centering the power as gravity shifts to the front and out of the punch. The body here, however, is anchored in the pelvis and the forward leg. 3) Both methods look the same, but feel very different.
@@FM-dm8xjthe stronger punch is stronger because you’re shifting your center of gravity towards the lead foot. during the stronger punch , the back foot turns as a consequence of you shifting you weight forward, rather than you pivoting on the rear foot and keeping the center of gravity there. not sure if that clears anything up but hopefully it does lol

It looks like the main difference is that in the second example the feet end up in a longer stance so you're more rooted for better stability. In the beginning, his feet are in a more narrow stance and not rooted very well so he's more easily unbalanced. I think this principle is taught in all martial arts but some teach it in the beginning and some teach it at advanced levels of training.

Look up videos on how to punch like Jack Dempsey or read his book "championship fighting." Is the same principle and a lot easier to understand. But in a nutshell: the physics of what's being demonstrated is throwing as much of the body's mass into the punch, which increases the force generated in the punch while not sacrificing stability in the footwork. You don't need to have the aesthetic snap shown in this video for the principle to work and can be achieved with simple punches like the jab and cross
You are 100% correct, the master knows physics and he is using it to fool us all. His first two pushes are on a 45 degree angle, where the puncher has no support. The last push is straight on and thus straight into his back foot and easily resisted.
The end result looks the same yes, that's the point. How he got there is what makes the difference. It's definitely hard to see from the outside but essentially instead of relying on kicking off of the floor and twisting with the back foot, he "falls" forward with his body, pushing and then twisting his hips, with the back heel lifting as a side-effect.
How Japan and many countries like Thailand preserve their fighting arts and even promote them internationally and we Indians have lost ours. And they can never come back.
This is so interesting…. If you have ever looked into fascia, and how your fascia affects your muscular structure and body… I think that’s what his techniques are manipulating. It’s not magic or spiritual, but it’s understanding the reflexes of the fascia. (I don’t even know if that’s a thing, but it looks like it from these videos).
I have great respect for Naka Sensei, and I can see how this would be stronger, but I was taught to keep the whole back foot on the ground and, while reducing the reach, for me this is more powerful still.
I like to keep both my heals down leaving your back heal up acts like a spring and weakens the effect of a strike as the attacker can potentially bounce back
I think, he was initially pushed to the side of the arm so he will lose his balance and moved backward. The way the instructor pushed the fist (and arm) in two scenarios are totally different. Check it out again. I could be wrong though.
