15 years ago in Youth Orchestra, I was sick for the sightreading day of this piece and walked in the next week completely unaware that the beginning of IV was just me and the bassoon transparent as all hell. Top 3 most holy sh!t moments of my band/orchestra career....
The "In the Village" movement was also used at the end of one of Akira Kurosawa's last films, called "Dreams". It was the first time I'd heard any of Ippolitov-Ivanov's works, and I've enjoyed his music ever since.
Love the piece, but found the performance a bit lugubrious. I have the Abravanel recording and prefer it, since this is an exciting showpiece for the orchestra, but that's just my preference. It zips by in 21:47.
Wunderschöne Interpretation dieser spätromantischen und ethnisch komponierten Suite mit farbenreichen doch perfekt vereiigten Tönen aller Instrumente. Der intelligente und erfahrene Dirigent leitet das perfekt trainierte Orchester im fließenden doch gut phrasierten Tempo und mit sorgfältig kontrollierter Dynamik. Erstklassig!
As Mr. Ippolitov-Ivanov can't react, I will do it on his behalf. See my uploads of his works. That should suffice to you what I think of his music. Not to mention the enormous effect he had on his students and the Russian music scene. That his take on the Caucasus and it's people is done through Western Russian eyes is typical for that time period. Look at all those American composers using Native American melodies, Busoni included, in a completely unauthentic way, not even adhering to the scope and style of the melodies, chanting and performing. But then again it is taken in by the composers, worked with et voila a different story is being told. Exactly that what art is! The Janisary military bands with its Turkish influences is another great example, widely to be found in the works of Haydn, Mozart and countless others. Hope my comment finds you happy and well. How can it be interesting if simple and the product of an untalented mind? Simple and the product of an untalented mind is not interesting, is it? So, if the overall evaluation is "always interesting," then the rest of the comment doesn't make sense, does it?

Take heart. Same story for me except it was 40 years ago and on bassoon. Terrifying, dangling in the wind like that. But we lived, yes? Lol.
