  • This episode of the series “Louisiana Legends” from January 9, 1984, features the first part of an interview with Senator Russell Long conducted by Gus Weill. Long, a native of Shreveport, served as a United States Senator from 1948-1987. He is the son of former Governor Huey Long. He discusses: memories of his father and his political career; his involvement in campus politics as a student at LSU, including his role as student body president; his LSU Law School class of 1942; his accomplishments in the Navy during World War II; and his early years in the United States Senate.

      Good for you! Russell Long, as chairman of the finance committee basically could put a couple things in the annual budget because the budget had to pass the finance committee and he was the chairman, so he used his power to institute things like this which help ordinary working-class americans!
