One of my relatives was training to become a nurse at one point and she was required to pass multiple rigorous classes for many years. Not to mention, if he's not being paid at least minimum wage, that's illegal unpaid labor, and considering he is doing much more sensitive work than a typical unpaid intern, he's probably not one of those.
